Pass Rush?

117 posts in this topic

Dont care if it's "vanilla" defense due to it being the preseason... Quality pass rushers don't usually get cut... Does anyone have any idea who if any quality pass rushers we could trade for? We have never had a complimentary pass rusher opposit Suggs since he has been here... Now with him out, we have zero. I see Kruger as a 5-8 sack guy, we need much much more.Osi from NY comes to mind... Any thoughts?

Peter Boulware and Adalius Thomas would like a few words with you.
Huh? Sizzle has been the ONLY consistant pass rush threat we've had for at least 5 years. Cmon man...

You said we've never had a complementary pass rusher opposite Suggs since he's been here. Nothing about only the past 5 years.

That being said, I understand your concern. Cutting OLBs doesn't really help to calm me down.

I think the timing is right for us to now make a bold move to aquire someone via trade. Its that serious; we have gone through pre season and see that our pass rush situation needs to be addressed ASAP... washed up pass rushers wont cut it.

It's concerning because its mostly 1 on 1's and we are not getting that much pressure at all. Nobody is getting doubled like Suggs does, we can't just win the battles so far this preseason.

Wait... what??? Did you really think I wanted to bring in Peter Boulware and Adalius Thomas? I was referring to them because it looked like you were treating them like chopped liver. Suggs complemented them when they were here, but you seem to be ignoring that. Just giving you a quick history lesson.

I have always believed you practice how you play.

Suggs- Out indefinitely
Upshaw- Needs a year
Kindle- Probably cut
McClellean- Decent bull rush but far from a threat
Krugar- Not looking good so far

I for one think we can use the cap space we have left and find a quality pass rush threat.

Im concerned for this season. Ive been an RavenLunatic since 1996, not ignoring our past great players or suggesting you were saying to bring them back LOL. Seriously though, this season should be OUR year, we must fix this...

I seem to remember a certain QB that we need to give a massive contract to... Nevermind, must've dreamt it.

Yeah, it's clear on 1-1 pass rush situations we are on the short end of the stick. IMO Rex Ryan was ahead of the curve with organized chaos. I think defense (TO A CERTAIN EXTENT) is becoming more schemed based than personnel based. What I mean is that I think that the right scheme can make up for player quality(to a degree). Like the shotgun spread offense that has taken over recently in the NFL... Oraganized chaos is starting too and will be the scheme of the future. Let's see what Pees is like during the regualr season.

Sizzle will likely be back by week 12 or something at the latest.
And remember guys, it's preseason!
There is bound to be some improvement in the regular season.

This is what we said in 09 as well.... when Mattison took over. Remember how that ended. We shall see though when we are using actual schemes. For be most part recently the defense hasn't been about overpowering people as much as scheme based to confuse like someone else said.

I trust Dean Pees's experience and ability to take this Ravens defense back to top 2 defense in the league, even without DPOY Suggs.

Look at Pees' resume, when he was a DC of the Pats 2006-2009, his defense was ranked top 2 in the nation. His top 3 stars were Mike Vrabel, Vince Wilfork and Asante Samuel. I believe Kugar will be better than Vrabel cuz it took like 10yr for Vrabel to be recognized as pro bowler. He wasn't good when he was drafted and played for the Steelers but when he's trade and play for the NE with Pees as LB coach and eventually DC, he is blossomed to one of the best.

We have Kruger, Ngata, and Webb which resemble the top 3 stars of Pees' weapons during his service in the NE. Remember, we have the best LB and FS in the history anchoring the defense. I have no worry when Pees take over this traditional elite defense.

I can't wait for the regular season to start cuz you know Pees will unleash his beast mode......

two players to keep a eye on are Daryl Tapp and Larry English whom both have a good chance of being cut
Tapp yes, English sucks.

Also Art Jones has no pass rush and no burst, he also looks overweight for DE. He's basically a smaller version of Cody, but at least Cody can collapse a pocket every once in a while.

I had high hopes for Kruger, Kindle and Upshaw but they have all been massive disappointments so far. Kruger can be a threat as a pass rusher but has struggled to set the edge. And he has been the best of the three! Upshaw can't keep up with anyone and looks more like a DE than an OLB, the man's 270+ after all the offseason conditioning! Kindle obviously has struggled in pretty much every facet of the game.

I'm willing to acknowledge the necessity of bringing in a veteran pass rusher, if only to provide some depth. I hope everyone realizes that we're not going to trade high picks or hand out large contracts. We just need a solid guy to help play backup to Kruger and McClellan.

What's scary is that there is no guarantee that Suggs will regain form or even return this season for that matter. The reason McPhee, Krugar and Ngata have had the success they have is due by and large to Sizzle being out there... I guess we will have to wait and see, I dont think the F.O. is happy with this situation as is... They probably are on it.

The trade deadline isn't until week 8 this year so we have time to make a trade for someone if we're not getting the type of pressure we need. I believe Kruger and McClellan will be fine. McPhee is also on the line with Ngata we'll get push and collapse the pocket. If Webb and Smith are our corners we'll be fine. If Cary is out there by himself I'll be worried he plays too far of his man and it seems a gurranteed completion when they throw at him. If we can get Joe signed we could make a move to get another proven pass rusher, or if we don't get Joe signed until the season is over we can offer a trade to another team for a 1 year helper until Suggs gets back Osi could be the one we target in the scenario.

i had high hopes for kruger coming into this season; last year he showed notable progress and with the added responsibility of suggs not being there, i'm sure he welcomes the challenge of replacing a player of that caliber. losing JJ in the offseason hurt immensely because he was reliable and durable and if he was still here, outside lb, while still a large area of concern, would be the only position to worry about; upshaw's rookie year development would not have to be rushed in an attempt to fill in for suggs. now they have to shuffle guys at the outside and sam position, and it could get messy.

but, all we can do is watch and wait for 55 to get back fully recovered.

one thing i will say is this; with our franchise's bread and butter going into the season limping, it puts more on the shoulders of the offense to score and compensate for a defense that without suggs will likely not generate the amount of turnovers and offense that they normally would, with him in the lineup. with the depth that we have at receiver and running back, they have the opportunity to do that and this is their time to step into their own. let's all hope they're up to the challenge...

The Ravens might need to blitz more or be more creative in disguising its defenses to create more pressure on QB's this year.
With out Suggs, I think the pass rush will suffer big time.

Kruger still looks like his holding JJ's boots. Obviously no where near T-sizzle.

Upshaw : looks like another injury prone linebacker, and surprisingly low motor.

Kindle : no comment, already said too many times

Albert McCllellan: highs and low. Mostly very mediocre. Looks like another depth guy.

Pernell Mcphee : one bright spot of DE's.

Ellerbe: No idea where this guy has been

Rest not even worth mentioning.

Tapp sounds interesting, what about Andre Carter?
Wouldn't mind Carter either. Heard some bad things about him being ready from the NE media. But it doesn't look like the Pats are going to resign him. Wouldn't be a horrible addition.

This is what I'm trying to tell people. I said this to a friend. We never know if Suggs will ever be the same and this could lead to us releasing him early. Never know how what we have will turn out but wouldn't be surprised to see us make a small move to secure the position. I think next year we should maybe trade up to take a top talent at either o line, lb or safety.

It and st coverage is our only worries this year. I'm still gutted we missed Ingram, perry and mercilus in the draft. They where the three pass rushers I wanted
