Last week I was about to buy a new copy of Madden NFL 13 for £27 ($43.88) but after reading all of the bad reviews it has been getting, I decided to go out to some second hand game shops and look for any cheap, older versions. Ended up getting Madden NFL 08 for £1 ($1.63) and Madden NFL 10 for £4 ($6.50). So far been having fun playing Franchise Mode on 08, haven't played 10 yet. These are the first Madden games I've played since like... the Sega Megadrive days, so even 08 seems fresh and new to me.

If you want a more recent one, I really liked 11. I don't know about 12 though.

I'll get to 11 eventually, I'm actually considering going on a scavenger hunt to pick up all of the previous PS3 versions of the game. I have every version of FIFA, dating back to the PS2 days. It's really cool being able to play through those games and witness the slow evolution as the years passed by. Would be fun to do the same with NFL.

Lol so I got distracted and got a ton of delayh of games, so it was 1st and 47 on the one yard line. Did a HB Toss Sweep and ended up running for a 99 yard touchdown lol. Against the jets.

I just picked up the game today and after playing for an hour didn't really get what all the beef on it was. Im not much of a create a player/roster guy so I dont really care that stuff wasn't available. Then again I'll be totally honest, 65% of the reason I picked it up today ($12 post game trade ins) was because we won the Super Bowl this year and this is the last game Lewis will ever be in lol. So maybe my low standards/reasons for getting it won't make me angry at the game.

Because Im lazy, what was all the ruckus about with this game? Seems on par from the other ones, and the scouting system seems more interesting.

Basically the fact that they eliminated franchise mode. It was a basically the best part for a lot of people of Madden. Fantasy Drafting with friends, creating your own team etc... was something a lot of people enjoyed.

My problem is more with the engine. It glitches out a lot. And the linebackers that can leap like they're on the moon.

But isn't the connected career mode essentially "franchise mode"? I started a coaching career and you play every game, practice, decide what players to upgrade and how to upgrade, sign FAs, scout players, draft players, depth chart, cut players etc is all in my hands.

Isn't it the same thing? Or are there features missing. Keep in mind I've just played the preseason and first week lol.

Damn I hated that in Madden 09-11, easily the dumbest thing EA has done. Totally takes away the intermediate passing game over the middle.

Fantasy Draft is missing. You can only do it with multiple people online. Furthermore, the one they patched in after everybody complained about it is fairly terrible.

On top of that, there's no way to sim multiple weeks in CC so to see how you're team does is a problem. You also won't be able to see other teams records and league stats.

CC is basically nothing like Franchise Mode.

CC is more like Superstar mode.

I finished my first season with the updated rosters and must say I like the game very much. Much more so than any Madden since 2005. Playing the connected careers just feels more immersive with the coaching traits, the scheme specificity for players and drafting, player progression based with on term production and potential. The game just feels more real for me at least.

One odd thing though is the CPU goes hog wild in FA and trades. Brees retired after the first year (what in the H?) and the Saints gave me a 3rd round pick for Tyrod lol. Then the Steelers put Worlids on the trading block and I picked him up for a 4th.

Weird.

Thank you voice of reason. Madden 13 really isn't bad. I think it's the best since 2005.

It's not bad, but there are a lot of little annoying things. The new engine still isn't anywhere close to being complete, they better fix that for their big 25th anniversary game this year. They're basically doing alpha testing on us with that, and they didn't learn from the previous year's edition that linebackers should not be able to leap like they're on a trampoline. There are so many little glitches, like cornerbacks running through, literally through, receivers to break on balls, the weird way running backs go down but sometimes not really (if that makes any sense). Those sorts of thing ruins gameplay. Add in the fact that you can't really customize your players, if they're programmed to wear arm sleeves they'll always be there and things of that nature, and it's just frustrating. And the numbers selecting is just busted, seriously, they had it so you couldn't select numbers players already had and now I have to double check.

I don't mind connected careers and playing from the perspective of a coach, but I'd rather play from the owners perspective. My favorite part of that first off-season in Madden 11 was firing Cam Cameron, and they took that away from me. And doing a fantasy draft team was always fun.

They admitted that there would be a few bugs. They literally rebuilt the engine and the interface from scratch this time, instead of just modeling it off the previous madden.

I'm pretty cool with this game, its just that the rookies are so unreal. They have the weirdest names, faces, and equipment. I get tired of seeing the same face every year... The names, too like Ish Waites. Who names their kid Ish? lol

Don't even get started with the equipment. It just ruins the gameplay when you see a WR with no gloves... ridiculous!

So pumped, the last time I played madden I wound up being matched against a LVL 13..think he was ranked around 700. I'm only a level 4..my record is ok but I dont play much.

I was the Ravens, he was new orleans.. I beat him 57-50 lol!!!! I had over 500 yds rushing on him...and it could have been a blowout but he was insanely good on kick returns and got 3 against me

I had a receiver I drafted in the 5th rd of a draft in my franchise in Madden '11 named Ish Griffin. Only had him for 3 years because by that time he was rated 97 overall and I already had two other young receivers signed long term that were 97 and 92 overall as well. Also still have one of my starting safeties named Tremendous Johnson, no lie hahaha. One of my starting outside linebackers is named Otto Graff. In other words, some of those guys in the developer's studio definitely have fun making players up.
