Troy Polamalu Overrated?

32 posts in this topic

According to Peter Schrager, Troy Polamalu is #1 on his top 10 overrated player list. I wish I knew how to paste the article off of foxsports.com for everyone. I happen to agree, Troy is no longer intimidating and not the player he used to be. As for his good guy image, I thought he played damn dirty against us, but I am sure everyone outside our organization will give him a pass because it was against the Ravens.

Yeah he doesn't frighten anyone anymore; I actually expect teams to pick on Troy in coverage. Torrey Smith will have many big games to come against them.

His main weapon is coming off the line unblocked because he's the wild card in the defense. It doesn't help that the announcers gush whenever he makes a tackle.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if posting a link was the same as copying and pasting what was showing on the http link for the site I was reading.
That was showing:
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/lists/2012-most-overrated-players-gallery-082312#tab=photo-title=1.+Troy+Polamalu%252C+S%252C+Steelers&photo=31278605

That could be wrong though, so I figured I better let everyone know it was on the Fox Sports website NFL home page.

I could watch that Dickson TD where Troy faceplants into the turf a million times and never get sick of it.

that was amazing and also the play where ray rice trucked him near the goal line a couple years back, i'm pretty sure it was in the playoffs

Polamalu has always been pretty bad in coverage but his entire game has been slipping for some years. Don't tell Steeler fans, though.

Yeah he's definitely overrated but he's still the best SS though. He shouldn't of got that DPOY award a few years ago.

hmm.. Over-rated is hard to say.. He's an in the box safety. He's not like Ed, He's not as crafty or as deceptive. Once Troys athleticism deminshes a bit more he wont be aroung long. Where as Ed can make-up for missing a step by his uncanny ability to know where the ball is going. Troy is a good player, lets not get it twisted. His game relies VERY heavily in his ability to be phycially better then his oppenent... I don't know if he's that gifted to overcome this ..

I always loved this guy. He plays with reckless abandon and had the speed and athleticism to do anything. I think that reckless abandon caught up with him and he's not the same player anymore. Ed isn't the tackler he once was either, but Ed's foorball brain and ball skills were his real talents so even after he's lost a step he can still be one of the greatest. Polamalu isn't able to do that. Once a great now just good. I have the utmost respect for him though. He's a gamer and a finisher. He closed out many games with a sack, interception, or fumble recovery.

Long story short he is either overrated or he isn't rated as highly as he used to be and is therefore accurately rated.

They can have Troy, I prefer "The Bonecrusher" anyway!
Took the words right out of my mouth and spoken like an football historian. We like too compare Troy/Ed all the time because of their positions however, we forget that Troy plays in a totally different scheme from ED. Both are GREAT at what they do. If you want a safety that is a ball hugger and pics everything off in his direction then you favor ED. If you want a safety that plays a deceptive game against the run and pass (Especially that famous strip against Flacco) Sorry guys :D Then you lean towards Troy. Both are worlds away from any other safety in the game.

I say he is still pretty awesome. His hey day has come and gone, but he is still better than most. ( not Ed though )

Okay, I feel like I need to take a shower now...

Ed is better at getting pics, Troy is more versatile (does a 'little' of everything: sacks, strips, int's, etc). But it's hard to 'honestly' compare the two because they play two different positions (one FS, the other SS); as the "objectives" of the two positions are different... A more 'accurate' comparison would be Ed vs. Ryan Clark, and Troy vs. Pollard. But Troy has def. been 'quieter' the last couple yrs... as his "durability" is in question because he gets hurt to easily...

I really hate that people bring Ed into these topics all the time. The stats don't lie and Ed trumps him in all categories. EVEN when Ed played SS.

And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not mention Ryan Clark and Ed Reed in the same sentence!!! Ever!

Not quite. Ed has 547 Professional career total tackles, Troy: 607. Ed has 6 total sacks, Troy 9. But Ed's got Troy in a lot of categories...

You forgot that Troy plays SS, and Ed plays FS. Troy is supposed to have more tackles and sacks. And if you look at it, Reed's numbers at SS completely trumped Troy's. No contest there.

Yes. My point exactly. It's hard to compare them when they have different assignments on the field. One's assignments results in more pics. The others assignments results in more tackles... usually anyway.

Wow. What were Reed's #'s at SS by the way ?

He was a tackling machine (averaged about what TP does per year), yet still INT'd his $%# off, tons of pass deflections and also was sacking the QB. Add in his return yards, forced fumbles and TDs as a SS, its pretty impressive numbers.

Edit - layout didnt hold. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/R/ReedEd00.htm
