Rise of McClellan

24 posts in this topic

I normally don't start player appreciation threads but Albert McClellan definitely deserves it.

There's no telling how long it'll be before Upshaw unseats him for the starting job. But the fact that McClellan is running with the first team (while holding off two former second round picks) and making plays is impressive.

He was an intriguing UDFA two years ago but I didn't think he had much of a future with the club beyond special teams. For him to make the practice squad and then be activate for every single game the next season was definitely a testament to the hard work he put in. And now, he looks like he'll be a legitimate contributor on defense this season.

Hope he keeps it up.

EDIT: Good CBS article on him (I never knew he went to the same HS as Ray)

The first 2 defensive drives I saw last night involved #50 running around everywhere, giving full effort. He popped off my screen unlike Upshaw so far. I don't think there is any doubt he gets a roster spot.

Agreed...

And he looks nothing like Beetlejuice! :)

I'm loving our UDFA finds these last few years. If we had spent a 2nd rounder on McClellan, I think people would be happy with the results. (Speaking of which, why are all our OLBs second rounders?).

Chavis Williams has done pretty well too. Maybe he'll have a breakout year in 2013.

It's amazing the great players Ozzie finds in free agency, the First Round of the Draft, mid-draft, late-draft, and even in the undrafted free agent market.
Albert McClellan is yet another sleeper we have that just about nobody knows about. Our depth is simply amazing.

2nd round is all over the place though.

Proven:
Ray Rice
Torrey Smith

Looking Good:
Terrence Cody
Kelechi Osemele

Undecided:
Paul Kruger
Courtney Upshaw

Bad:
Sergio Kindle

I love the guys like McClellan. It shows high character and a strong work ethic. It takes a lot of mental toughness and drive to be defensive player of the year after being a 2 star recruit, and then competing for a starting spot after going undrafted. I love his determination.

He played great yesterday, and I think he may have even played better than Kruger. He set the edge better and got good pressure.

I think Cody has earned the right to be proven, he's been a very good NT for us since we drafted him, and Kruger can be looking good because he's very very solid these past two seasons

Kindle is as good as gone IMO. Chavis Williams and Albert will be the back ups to Kruger and Upshaw until Suggs is back.

So excited to see them come in on certain packages.

not a good news story about McClellan

Albert McClellan faces domestic violence charges

Linebacker Albert McClellan faces domestic violence charges in Florida, following a previously unreported arrest. According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, McClellan was arrested on June 30 in Lakeland, Florida on charges of battery and simple assault with threat or intent to do violence.
The charges, both misdemeanors, may not be pending much longer. The alleged victim, a former girlfriend of the player’s, has failed a waiver to not prosecute.

While is sounds like the charges will be dropped, it still brings neagtive news towards the Ravens and McClellan

Players are no different than average people who get into trouble. Just because they're granted excellent opportunities doesn't mean they'll have the awareness and discipline to take full advantage of it. Albert HAS been taking full advantage, so this is surprising to me.

I'll let it play out. Strange it wasn't reported although it happened nearly 2 months ago.

Not good to hear but it doesn't sound like much. If an ex is willing to drop charges it couldn't have been that bad. Usually those are the people who want you locked up.

As a former probation officer who was in the domestic violence division, I can tell you that statement is 100% not true.

Usually. Most fans root the other way, though, when they are good players for their team.

If I had a dollar every time an athlete beat a women, I would be owning the Ravens.

Wow! Talk about guilty until proven innocent.

This sounds like something that only came out because of McClellan's recent notoriety. "Previously unreported arrest"? "former girlfriend"? My gosh, the charges are already in the process of being dropped. Things aren't always as represented in the media(duh!?).

I was close to calling his career as a Raven over, but after reading the details I don't even see a story here. He'll be better off without her.
