Sleeping Dogs (PS3/Xbox 360/PC)

19 posts in this topic

Anyone played "Sleeping Dogs" yet? So far, it's my favorite game of 2012!

The game went completely under the radar after it was dropped by Activision in 2011, citing "high production costs." After its inception as an original property, it was once marketed as a reboot of the "True Crime" franchise.

Square-Enix picked up the rights to the game but opted not to purchase the "True Crime" license, instead deciding to retool the existing game back into an original property.

Because the game was mostly finished when cancelled, there was a quick turnaround, which explains why there hasn't been much marketing for the game. However, buzz has been strong lately with mostly positive reviews from major outlets and publications.

I haven't played it wait, but I've seen some gameplay vids and it looks pretty fun.

I've heard some say it's like GTA in China, and I don't think I can disagree from the gameplay I've seen.
If Madden was coming out soon, I'd get it.

The game is like a mix of GTA's story, L.A. Noire's attention to detail, and Saints Row's ridiculous variety of side missions.

You aren't an errand boy in this game as much as the GTA series, but you really don't mind running errands because of how the story frames your role. Even though there's really nothing original about this game, it combines the best elements of its influences and does it so well that you don't mind.

The combat system is very much like Batman: Arkham City, but more timing than button-mashing. The gunplay is very much like Max Payne 3. The driving is surprisingly excellent, almost on-par with a full-featured driving game like Burnout or Need For Speed. And, most importantly, the game does a great job with immersion; for example, as you rise up the ranks, people on the street begin recognizing you and side mission dialogue is changed to reflect your standing ("Oh, Wei Shen! I had no idea it was you! My apologies, but can you please help me?")

The attention to detail is also ridiculously great. While there are some lapses in logic, it's great to see the little things like the aftermath of one of your killings. After you've killed someone, if you stick around, you'll see an ambulance arrive and medics will check the bodies. Police will arrive and officers will take notes on notepads. Bodies will be carried away in body bags and everything generally resembles a makeshift crime scene in the span of a few minutes.

As Franchise already knows (from me talking to him on twitter) i love this game. I have 40 hours played, and 34 of the 50 achievements. I even wanna play the game through again, which is something i rarely do.

haha, yeah. Thats the norm. Real 1080p and anti-aliasing really makes games look amazing.

Its why i switched to PC gaming.

I've viewed several TV spots for the game recently and was definitely intrigued. Based on the comment on this thread it definitely seems like a game I would enjoy.

The problem is, I am still addicted to Mass Effect 3 player, I just got my pre-ordered copy of Transformers: Fall of Cybertron yesterday, I plan on picking up the new Madden next week, and already have Assassin's Creed 3 and Hitman: Absolution preordered, I can't see myself getting the time to play it in the near future seeing as I've basically already committed myself to all of the aforementioned games, haha. Hopefully I can get a chance to check out Sleeping Dogs soon, though..

I know how you feel. I picked up Sleeping Dogs at midnight and wanted to play as much of it as i could before Madden comes out. So thats what i did, and ended up beating it already. So now Madden will keep me busy till borderlands 2, resident evil 6, halo 4, black ops 2, and others.

I don't know how i'm going to have time to play all those either haha

What i have seen of Resident evil 6 just continues to piss me off. I miss survival horror. They have also ruined the Splinter Cell series. The last good one was chaos theory. devs these days cant make survival horror nor stealth anymore. EA and Ubisoft are single handily killing genres.

I know what you mean man. I was a kid grew up playing the original Silent Hill and such back in the mid-late nineties. Dead Space is one of my favorite current franchises but Dead Space 3 is looking decidedly less survival horror and more 3rd person shooter. Don't get me wrong, I love 3rd person shooters (never been a FPS guy) but what made the first Dead Space and to a lesser extent the 2nd one, was the survival horror aspect. Now it looks like the pure action sequences from "2" (which were a good mix with the survival horror aspects) have completely taken "3" over from all of the trailers and gameplay I have seen of it...

Just bought this game because of this thread, Franny. You just had to get me all curious, huh? Just had to make me like this game, did ya?

Played it all day yesterday, and I'm actually thinking about foregoing sleep tonight... because that's what's making sense in my head right now.

Thanks, Franchise. :wifey:

Picked it up a few days ago finally and it is definitely a sweet game. Its like they took aspects of various games and threw them into a open world action game-blender. Still getting used to driving on the left side of the road though, its like The Getaway on PS2 all over again, except this game is 10x better, haha.

You mean you don't drive on the right side of the road anyways, while heckling everyone else because they're on the wrong side?
