Cary williams declines offer

102 posts in this topic

I just saw this article on the Sun about how the FO offered cary williams a 3 year 15 mill contract which he declined and there are no contract talks going on right now. It seems like he wants to wait and thinks he can get a better deal after another year as a starter. He says he wants to stay a raven and doesn't have intentions to leave after this year.

IMO this was a very fair deal for cary, he should of took the deal and ran with it. I don't see the FO offering him more money unless he has a better year then last year which is possible but why take the gamble. I know he didn't look good at all in the first two games of preseason but thats the first two games AND the preseason.

Another way to look at this is that he knows his financial future is going to depend on this season so hopefully he works his tail off and has a career year proving that he's better than 5 mill a year

At least we saved money, the team is only paying $1.927 Million for his service for this service. From the preseason game, he doesn't look like CB #1 Material because he's been getting burned by #1 WRs. Preseason might have lowered his value, but we still have a whole season to decide if he's worth 3 year 15 Millions. I assume Cary Williams wants to try expand his value to what Ladarius Webb got, (6 years for $50 Million). Whatever floats his boat, but this might be a good or bad thing for the Ravens because we can either keep for cheaper or lose him to other teams that are willing to overpay for any quality CBs (Pagano and Colts).

LOL, Cary thinks he is worth more and is another player who looks good in OUR system. If he wants to chase the money fine, but if he wants a ring he should accept the 3 year $15 million deal. That is a fair deal and if he don't take it, go enjoy the money and no rings somewhere else.

Well he obviously feels he's better than the deal and will play this year to prove it. That's a win in my book.

Well yeah but I just wish we had more players who cared about winning a Super Bowl than money when they are truly given a fair deal. $15 over 3 years is a very good offer for a CB of his caliber.

I believe Cary wants to win a SB with the Ravens. He just feels his talents are worth more. We shall see. No motivator like money!!!

Although i think Cary is a pretty dam good CB, that was pretty dumb on Cary's part. But hey, it might work out in our Favor. He might play better because he is working for a big Pay day. It might come back to bite him in the butt though.

I don't think that any of our CBs can stop Calvin Johnson in the open field.
[/quote]

You're right

However last time Calvin Johnson came to our house, we only allowed him 4 catches for 37 yards on 12 targets back in 2009, but back then Daunte Culpepper was throwing for injured Stafford. Also, that season, our best CBs were Foxworth, Webb, and Carr, before their injuries.

We just have to adjust our scheme to try to slow Megatron by jamming him and then have a safety over top. Heck, maybe we have to resort to having two CBs. Last year, no team could've shut him down.

Only one guy actually shut him down in the last two years and his name is Darrelle Revis.

5 mill a year for 3 years....I don't know. I would of took it if I was him. I'm glad he thinks he'll be worth more, and wants to stay with us.
But I like the try by our front office.

He probably could get like 5 more or so from a CB needy team like the Lions or Colts.

Considering the fact that theres a good chance that jimmy beats him out for the cb2 spot... Should of taken the money. I like cary but jimmy has the attributes to be better...

I dont blame him for wanting more money or should i say working to have a better season than last year for more money. he's 27 years old and why not try to see if you can get more money with a better performance than last year

Let him test the market next year and if he gets a better offer let him walk. We just paid Webb and we have Jimmy's services taken care of for a while. Can't pay our entire cb unit. We still have nice depth with Graham, Gorrer and Jackson.

I think that Williams got the message when we left him out there for a 2nd round pick and no one seemed interested in him. Well, I guess the FA market will need to be really thin before someone considers spending $8M+ on a guy that may not start and is coming off of an injury. Let's just see how he does this year before we increase the offer.

If it was a 3 year extension I assume that doesn't include this season. That is the way it was for Webb so either way he would still make the same amount this season. Even if he has a down year he is still a good corner with excellent size so barring a major injury I expect us to offer him at least the same contract next year.

All that said, Cary isn't a $10 mil per year corner like Webb is. He's probably around a 7 or 8. So he's basically risking $15 million for a chance to earn a couple million more per year in the future. Maybe a CB needy team like the Lions will overpay for him but it's a gamble for sure.

I'm not going to knock Cary for not jumping into the deal and thinking about his future, especially when it concerns the future of his family.

However, he is fooling himself IMO if he thinks someone in the league is going to pay him Revis / Asomugha / Webb type money. He is a solid #2 CB and he has shown nothing yet to indicate he is anything more. Yes, I'm sure the hip injury is still not 100% so that is a factor in his recent play, but I just don't see any teams offering him much more than what we just did. With Webb and Smith here for the forseeable future, Graham locked up for another season after this, and cheaper guys who have already been impressing like Gorrer and Jackson, Cary turning down that offer looks like his Baltimore swan song to me. I've always liked Cary so I only wish him the best in putting together a quality season this year not only for our championship aspirations, but also so he can perhaps cash in elsewhere, because he won't get more than the 5 million a season our team just offered, here.

knowing what I know about the situation and putting myself in his shoes, I'm saying to myself... i just had pretty big surgery, one wrong turn and my ACL is blown and I prolly won't be the same... I will take what I can get now. 16 NFL games(maybe more) is a looong time to stay healthy.

If he loses his starting job to Smith he better fires his Agent. I don't think that he will repeat the last season considering the competition we will face this year.

After watching his play vs J. Jones and Megatron us fans may say he should have taken the deal but how much money did D. Foxworth get on the free agent market? If D. Foxworth was able to scam a big contract, maybe Carry Williams can also. I think he should have signed but if he thinks he can get more as a free agent, good luck buddy!

I don't like the Jets much as well as Darrelle Revis but in fact he is one of the best CBs out there right now. I believe Webb will eventually join the elite ranking after he gets more experiences.

About Cary, I was kind of happy that he didn't sign the contract and took the gamble route; it's win win situation for the Ravens btw but it's not for Cary. We have alot of depth for CBs and Cary will work his [profanity deleted] off to compete for, not just with Jimmy for the starting job but the rest of the CBs roster.....That's alot pressure and burdened he put on himself......luxury food, housing, and spendings or just an average Joe......
