Our Need For A For A Kicker.

10 posts in this topic

How many years are we going to deal with Matt Stover on kickoffs? Getting it to the 10-12 is not getting it done. Also, we need a kicker that can knock down 45+ yarders. We pass on them(FG's) because of lack of confidence towards Stover. I know we had a long kicker, but cut him... I am all for keeping autoMATTic for inside 45yds, but damn, we are going to need someone! Seeing how are Special Teams coverage has been suspect, we need to be able to kick it into the Endzone!

I wish I could sit down with newsome and tell him to sign rhylls llyod. I still don't understand why we cut him. He was so significant to our special teams in 06. He kicked it in the endzone everytime against the wind. That Cribbs touchdown would not have happened.

He was pretty darn accurate hit a 54 in preseason right down the middle good for maybe 70 leg so strong.

Pretty sure Lloyd signed with the Panthers.

I do wish, however, that we had room for another kicker. Although I would want Stover in for every single field goal, another kicker would be useful for kickoffs. I wouldn't trust a guy with a big leg to take field goals outside of 45 yards unless we needed it to tie the game.

The thing with Stover and another kicker is... You wanna K that can kick in the endzone, but Matt is as money as it gets on FG's. Now i agree i would love to have a K that can boot it deep in the endzone and also make those 50+ FG's. But a consisent K is hard to find and many teams don't like to waste 2 roster spots for K's.

I think having a defense like ours negates the lack of touchbacks, but it would be nice to have offenses try and go 80 yards on our D.

rhys LLoyd did sign with the Panthers and leads the league in Touchbacks at 16. Even with that stat though his avg kickoff is 69.7, just about to the goal line. Matt stover's avg kickoff is 63.1, or about to the 7 yd line. A difference of about 7 yds on average and yes he does rank near the bottom this year.

My point is from top to bottom, the difference is ony 7 yards...its not worth wasting a roster spot (which the panthers are doing since rhys isnt kicking FG's), to gain 7 yards!

Another stat is average return yards, which is your special teams after you kick, the panthers give up 24.2 yards per kick, and the ravens only give up 19.2 yards per kick. So that 7 yards further that Rhys gets is now only 2 yards further then Stover, since our special teams is better.

You especially cannot afford to use a roster spot on a kicker when 3/4 of your secondary is out.

I dont think we need a kicker just yet, Stover made a couple bad kicks but he looks to be back to normal, we will need one soon thou (in about 2-3yrs), lets face it Stover is getting old and eventually his leg is

going to give out.
