Anyone think our secondary is overrated?

300 posts in this topic

I think we have a pretty good secondary but White & Jones are a lot for any secondary to deal with without a pass rush. I'm nor going to lie, when I sleep I keep seeing Jones jumping over Carry Williams back making a spectacular catch do a TD!

geez, you wouuld think we just lost the superbowl because of our secondary. This is why there is a preseason, well one of the reasons, get the guys back up to game speed and ready, if anyone looks at that tape and expects that to be a normal game for our defense in the first quarter i think your sadly mistaken. our secondary will be fine, just wait....

When it comes to consistency, there is not another secondary in the league that compares to ours on a year-by-year basis. I wouldn't trade them for any other. It was one preseason game, nothing to get overly upset about. Just keep the faith.

Anytime you tell the world that you're the best at anything, when you haven't performed at a level to back it up, I'm going to consider you to be overrated. If Webb had called the secondary "top five", or "one of the NFL's best", then he would have a point, because they've performed at a top five level, but calling yourself the best when you don't have the stats to back it yet seems a little cocky.
So were you one of those guys mocking Flacco for saying he's the best QB in the NFL?

As a wise man once said, stats are for losers. If Webb thinks we have the most talented secondary in the league, I certainly wouldn't disagree with him.

I normally agree with you but I severely don't agree with you about this. Ravens or and team in the league would trade their best CB for Revis. Revis may not be better in run support than Webb but its not like he has him beat out by a mile in that department and a CB TACKLING is the last of my worries but COVERING is numero uno!

Like saying you wouldn't trade Antoine Winfield for Deion Sanders, lol.
If salary cap and attitude weren't a factor, then sure, we'd take that trade.
But if we can have 90% of Revis at 20% of the cost (guesstimate), there's no way I see us doing that trade ... right player right price thing

I think our db's are a overrated by the media, fans, and players this year. I still think they will be very good, but I do not trust Cary Williams to stop getting beat deep.If hes not getting beat deep he gives Wr's like 8 yards of cushion on the line of scrimmage so he can get beat underneath. Webb will be solid as usual, Ed is getting older, Pollard is known for hitting not coverage, and Jimmy smith isn't proven. I like Danny Gorrer in the slot but I don't think our pass rush will be nearly as good as last year, which will cost our cb's even moRe.

Thoughts?

why do you cats love "self-inflicting" wounds with these threads? lol!

These long offseason threads are funny. I'm going to start doing summaries.

To summarize this thread:

The delightfully loud minority: "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Mommy I don't like this toy anymore."

Everyone else: "Word, son?"

Keep in mind, against ATL, Roddy had a catch or two against Corey Graham, who is fighting for number 4 on the depth chart. Julio, meanwhile, is on his way to becoming a beast, if he isn't already.

No, our secondary is not overrated. I'm still waiting for the bulk of the media to acknowledge that Webb had the best season of any of our DBs last year, and compared very strongly with Revis, Nnamdi, Woodson, Browner, etc...

What would help Cary and Jimmy would be to play more press man. They're big and physical, and they give up cushions way too often for my liking.

Gotta disagree with you on Webb, he is clearly top 3. Wasn't scored on once last yr.
The only difference between Webb and Revis , is Revis gets away with P.I. All The Time.

Being Humble doesn't mean you have to cut him short : )
you aren´t top 3 after one year of production. revise is a shutdown corner for 5 years now.
aso is also better in my eyes because he was a standout performer on a weak team (raiders)
asante samuel is also a beast.
DRC has to be in the mix.
patrick peterson is very good as well.
joe hyden is one of the best, too.

he could become top three if he continues to perform on a high level over the next three years...

don´t get me wrong i love my webb. but greatness comes with time...

Of course not. It's fairly common knowledge what Flacco meant, and I got what he was trying to say back when he said it, too.

There's a world of difference between saying that having confidence in yourself is an important part of performing well at sports, and saying that your secondary is the best in the league when you haven't backed it up yet. I didn't buy Eli's claim that he was elite when he said it, and I wouldn't buy it if the Buccaneers declared themselves the best team in the league tomorrow.

So, wouldn't you say that the idea behind what Webb said is basically the same as when Flacco said he's elite?

Hum, a good bit of dislikes for the OP of this thread but I do agree with him. There is a lot of hype for the DB's this year but I don't see the improvement from last year or the years in the past. Matt Ryan had a field day last Thursday and the Raven's corners better get better or it will be long season for us fans.
oh dear god you did not just say that? Compared last year to previous years? Last year was probably the best pass defense we had since 2006. How can you even compare last year to previous years.

And then to say they have their work cut out for them after 1 qtr of preseason where play calling is vanilla, to not show anything, well, you clearly dont have a clue.

And again, why would you base your opinion on a SINGLE QUARTER of a football game?

Because he's a Colts fan that likes to exaggerate issues with the Ravens.

Are you seriously using THE FIRST PRESEASON GAME as a barometer for what our team will be in the regular season?

Love how you always pop in with uninformed posts just to cause controversy. "Dont see the improvement"? The NFL is ONE PRESEASON GAME INTO THE SEASON!!! Hilarious!!

Also keep in mind, we play Megatron this week.

I'd rather not think of that. I'm in denial.

I popped in and gave my opinion just like everyone else on what I saw last Thursday. The difference is I don't wear the purple shades to cove up the issues. Yes, its one preseason game but that's all we have to judge so far of the 2012 Ravens corner backs. In just a little over a qtr of play J. Jones had 6 catches for 109 yards and a TD and R. White caught 3 balls for 46 yards.
To me that's terrible first defense play. Sorry, but that's the truth, it needs to get better.
Now I can give a little bit because the Falcons do have a good offense but so do the Lions and the many teams the Ravens have to play this season. My thoughts are the Ravens DBs need to improve.

Not really, no. Although it doesn't much matter to me what Webb says, or how cocky he is as long as the secondary performs as the best in the league. If the secondary comes out to play against Detroit, then I'll happily recant my opinion. but until the secondary performs, I'll have to say that Webb is overrating it.

Correction - Cary Williams needs to improve. Like turn and look for the ball. The other guys committed themselves pretty well. We'll see more as we go. But based on one quarter of football Tom Brady is going to stink this year also. Let's keep it in perspective. If it happens 1 or 2 more times, we may be seeing a trend.

Still don't get how you come to this conclusion on such a small sample size. It's because it's only one preseason game (less, actually) that we can't judge their performance just yet. They're not gonna give AFCCG-esque effort for Week 1 of the Preseason. If the secondary continues to show weaknesses well into the regular season, then we have a problem.
