Deonte Thompson Thread

Thompson will get a lot of looks next week; if he continues to work hard and excel when given opportunity, he will be on 53 man roster and a slot for 4th reciever......

The thing with Deonte was also a lack of opportunities while in college. But I was extremely impressed with him. Possession Guy? What player we're you watching? Deonte wore 83 and constantly got behind DBs.

I still predict that we carry an unprecedented seven WRs: Boldin, Smith, Jones, LQW, Streeter, Thompson, and Doss.

You don't play stashing games with a Guy that runs 4.2 or a 6'5 guy that runs 4.3. And we're not giving up on Doss and his great hands. Of course injuries could work these things out too.

They all need to be showcased so we know who to keep, because they're sure as hell not going to get many receptions during the season.
Right. Even if we keep 7 as I predict, most will play STs exclusively.

We will see a few surprise cuts when we reduce the roster from 90 to 53. I don't think D. Reed is going to make it this time unless he is put on PUP and/or gets an injury settlement. Streeter and Thompson won't last long on the practice squad if they end up there.
At this point, Streeter and Deonte have to play their ways off the team. Same for Rainey. Bernard Pierce better get his butt on the field. I don't care if we traded up to get him, his spot isn't written in ink.

If doss doesnt get over this latest injury i think he will be out the door. He NEEEDS to get fit and get practice and game time. He is Boldins replacement in my eyes, a possession guy with great hands, that sould get tuff yards, unless of course he really is soft.

That might just save him because this is probably boldins last year, especially if Jacoby or someone else shows up. We wont be paying a guy who would then in that situation be no.3 on the depth chart, pretty much No.1 WR money.

Id love to see them keep them all, Boldin Smith Jones Williams Doss Thompson Streeter. F reed out the door, provided we have a KR placement.

Question would be who would miss out in that scenario because we are deep at CB as well, and its not a great idea carrying less linemen for an extra WR.

Based on the depth of talent and with yesterday's game, I have the 53 projected as:

QB 2- Flacco, Taylor
RB/FB 4- Rice, Leach, Rainey (KR), Pierce (or a vet)
TE 3- Dickson, Pitts, Bajema
WR 7- Boldin, Smith, Jones, LQW, Streeter, Thompson, Doss
OL 8- Mckinnie, Oher, Yanda, Williams, Birk, KO, Grandkids, Harewood

DL 7-Ngata, Cody, Jones, McPhee, Kemp, Hall, McBean
LB 8- Ray, Upshaw, Kruger, McClain, McClellan, Ayenbadejo, Kindle, Carr
CB 6- Webb, Smith, Williams, Graham, Gorrer, Jackson
S 4- Reed, Pollard, Thompson, O. Brown

K- Tucker (I hope)
P- Koch
LS- Cox

IR: J. Reid, McBean (possibly)
PUP: Suggs (I don't he plays this year).

So I could see 7 WRs, but Doss does need to be careful. They could stash Doss on IR. I just don't see any way both Streeter and Deonte are not on this team. Hell we carried Justin Harper for 3. years and he didn't have their skillset.

My prediction right now is that Laquan wins the fourth spot, Streeter fifth, and there's going to be a battle between Doss and Thompson for the 6th and final WR spot on this roster. A lot can change in three more preseason games, but this is how I see it atm.

I totally agree that we will carry 7 WRs even if we need to get creative with using the injured reserve to hide them.

Yeah i think your right. I really think they will keep Streeter over Doss. Way too much upside for Streeter.

I dont know about that. Doss has some really good hands. I expect him to be higher on the depth chart than Streeter, and therefore more of a lock to make the team.

Yeah he has great hands, terrible speed and is always injured. I'd love to keep him too but we only have so many roster spots.

i never, ever thought we would have so many wr's to choose from and they all seem fast. Torrey is already considered one of the fastest in the NFL, add in thompson that would be insane . Im assuming streeter didnt see anytime in the game? i wasnt able to catch a lot of it, just the highlights of julio jones tearing us apart.

In 2010 when had Q, Mase and Housh...who would have imagined two yrs later we'd have one of the fastest receiving corps in the NFL.
This is assuming we keep Thompson and Streeter , which I sincerely hope we find a way to do.

This is the various reports on these kids. Deonte ran a 4.25 and Streeter a 4.35.

Doss out the door? Ha! He's been back at practice since before Thursday's game. Talk about overreacting to one preseason game.

Deonte might be fast, but Streeter is big and fast.

You can't teach speed, but also you can't teach size either.

Three wrs are a lock. williams probably is due to ST. If streeter and Thompson show up and play well John won't be afraid to pick them if Doss can't get on the field.

Doss has done zero for this team his position is far from secure and he is fighting like everyone else. If he's outplayed he won't be here simple as that. Not sure why you think otherwise
and for the record you clearly don't pay any attention to any of my posts if you think I pin a roster spot on one preseason game. As explained above it would be a combination of 4 preseason games. All tc and offseason and of course all last year.

Yip, overreacting to one game, sure am
He doesn't have terrible speed. He's not a burner but he isn't slow either. Reports were coming out of camp that he was getting great separation on defenders. His football IQ is off the charts and he is probably the best route runner behind Boldin. With his intelligence and route running he is able to compensate for not having 4.4 speed. He's also extremely tough. He played the majority of his last season at Indiana injured and was still able to abuse defenses. If he's being held of camp then the injury is serious. He is in no way shape or form 'soft'.

Doss is staying whether you like it or not. He's the heir apparent to Boldin and I feel will fall into the role Mase had when he was around.

While I also think we'll keep Streeter, Tandon will see much more playing time when it's all said and done. But lets be real here.... with the abilities of our tight ends and Q, Torrey, and Jones the opportunities for a lot of these guys getting on the field are slim. They're just buried too deep on the depth chart.
I klike doss i want him on this team. But he isnt "staying whether you like it or not". Hes done nothing, nothing up to this point, and if he cant overcome this injury and have a good preseason he wont be on the team more than likely, unless streeter or thompson also have awful preseasons.

Hes not ray lewis, suggs, ngata, reed, flacco etc. He is on of the 10/15 or so that were here last year than arent pretty much guaranteed a spot on the roster.

If he sees game time in these last three games i dont doubt he will do we ll and be here, but if another wee niggling injury creeps up and he doesnt, while i wouldnt be surprised if the keep him based on potential, i wouldnt be surprised if they went elsewhere either.

In fact David Reed if not for his knee injury right now would be more of a "lock" than Doss due to his KR which, minus a few fumbles, has been outstanding.
The "he's staying whether you like it or not" statement comes from past experiences with previous players. Our front office gives guys their fair shake before jettisoning them. Demetrius Williams and Oneil Cousins come to mind instantly when thinking about players that got multiple seasons to prove themselves before they were released.

Doss has way too much promise to cut him after just one season of bad luck with injuries. He's been doing well in camp and it is my understanding that he's back from his latest injury.
hes been injured most of camp, and has had like one training session since. he still has a week to get through before the next game, and when players, well one player calls another soft, you know something isnt quite right there.

And you arguement about cousins and the likes, is because, while awful, they at the time, didnt have anyone better coming behind them, whereas Doss, will have Williams and thompson, who may or may not have good preseasons and really push him.

I think Doss will be in the 53, but hes far from a lock.

Yes I do think you're overreacting. Out of sight, out of mind. What makes Deonte and Streeter suddenly a threat to Doss' spot on the roster? Because they had a few catches against 3rd stringers in a preseason game?

Doss was hurt last year, but no more than Torrey. He was still in position to play. He didn't because he was a rookie learning the system. And half the roster has had some sort of nagging problem this offseason. Doss is fine now. Why don't you watch him play before you make assumptions like his spot is threatened by some on and off rookies?

Doss isn't going anywhere. The team knew that he was injured coming into the draft, and didn't expect him to contribute much if it all. This year, he was fully healthy, and came up with a minor injury. The team has been holding out all kinds of people all camp for minor injuries. Nothing to worry about yet. He's Boldin's eventual replacement. A team can't give up on a guy as sure-handed as he is without giving him a chance.
I have watched him play, i watched, albeit, youtube, and a lot of it after we drafted him, i watched him in all preseason games last year, and as i said, hes a boldin clone, and the plan has to be to replace him with Doss. Hes a talent, thats not arguable.

What im saying is his position is not a lock, he isnt ray lewis for example, if he doesnt get practice in, get some game time in, and Steeter and Thompson light it up, he could be in trouble, but if he gets back and fit, he wont be.

For what its worth, i havent even seen the second half of the first preseason game, so i havent even seen streeter and thompson play, i have no idea what they are like, and i dont form my opinions of what other people have said. This has NOTHING to do with the first preseason game as i tried to explain to you which you clearly ignored. Ill say it again, you obviously dont pay attention to anything i post here.

This is all about Doss and IF he cant get fully fit to play, and then of course, Streeter and Thompson have to have a very very good Preseason to put him under pressure.

NOTHING TO DO WITH 1 GAME... no over reaction here mate.

Doss is not a lock if he cant stay fit, simple as that. He doesnt offer anything on special teams, well he can return as shown in Indiana, but obviously he isnt rated here or he could have had a shot or two some games last here, he doesnt go on coverage teams, and thats also a downside to him.

If he gets fit, and gets games hes in, if he doesnt, he should still be in on talent, but hes not a lock, and i wouldnt be surprised, angry, disappointed yes, but not surprised if he wasnt in the 53 because of injuries.
