"Ravens fans wanted to run Flacco out of town last year" - Steve Wyche

143 posts in this topic

I don't have the exact quote but this mooring on NFL AM Steve Wyche, while answering the question of who he would trust more Joe Flacco or Matt Ryan? Answered that He would choose Ryan and followed with "Up until the early half of last year, Ravens fan were looking to run Flacco out of town!"

I'd love to hear you opinions on this... I personally think Joe is the best QB we've had in our franchise's short history and want nothing more than to keep him around for the long haul. To Wyche's point, I felt this way long before the early half of last year.

It just goes to show you that most analysts speak out of their [profanity deleted] nowadays. I don't know where he got that notion from but the vast majority of the fanbase has been backing Flacco since day 1.

They probably asked one person and that one person just so happened to be either 'I am Legend' or 'edreedfromthesouth'.

The majority of Ravens fans have stuck behind Flacco (and justifiably) and most the time we are bashing Ryan.

Joe Flacco in the playoffs and winning four seasons and counting.

Matt Ryan.... :crickets:

Wyche can blow it out his......ears. So-called "Expert"...you can find those anywhere.

Yeah, that's not true at all... maybe a loud minority wanted him gone, but certainly not most Ravens fans.

That's usually how it works. The people that call into shows or send emails are usually the ones that have extreme lopsided views.

The people who are content stay quiet for the most part.

The talking heads can keep praising Ryan over Flacco all they want. In my eyes, it comes down to this: Flacco wins ball games, Ryan doesn't win as many, and has been a loser thus far in his career when it counts.

I hate how in the two dozen "Ryan Vs Flacco" debates they have never mentioned the quality of defenses the two go against. Ryan plays more than half his games in a dome (8 home games plus at least 1 road game against the Saints) while Joe plays outside. Joe also faces nearly constant top 10 defenses while Ryan faces defenses like Tampa Bay, New Orleans, and Carolina twice a year. We saw in the Rams game last year what Joe can do in a dome against a bad defense.

every argument 1 guy picks Flacco one guy picks Ryan... Im not gonna knock Flacco to make Ryan look better.. I think Flacco is very talented and is a good QB... I would perfer Ryan but i cant knock Flacco

Most of the guys on NFL AM picked Flacco over Ryan and they pointed out that while Flacco has a better defense, Ryan has Roddy White, Julio Jones and Gonzo...better weapons than Flacco has had.

AFC North defenses > NFC South defenses

Falcons offensive weapons > Ravens offensive weapons

Oh, and Matt Ryan got shut out last year in the playoffs. By the Giants. 2 points. Smh.

Flacco > Ryan

Ryan is losing more and more ground in this debate with each passing season.

It's usually the naysayers who are the loudest. It's the minority who wants to be heard. I think this board is a good representation of Ravens fans as a whole.. well at least educated ones lol

Flacco will win a SB before Ryan. Period.

I know we've been here because, and honestly if I were a Falcons fan I'd probably pick my guy as well. However, I'm interested to know exactly what the overall view of Matt Ryan is. Why does he seem hesitant to push the ball downfield against better defenses.

I notice in limited games i've seen, mainly playoffs, when things aren't going well, Ryan seems to drop his shoulders as if he's losing confidence. Do you and others see the same, or am I not viewing it correctly. I see that you guys loss 5 out of the 7 games where Ryan was asked to attempt 35+ passes. To me that says he's not the type of guy who you can place the game on his shoulders for 4 quarters. However public perception is that he's exactly that. Am I just looking too much into the numbers?

I feel Matt Ryan is a really good QB, but I feel many of his flaws get overlooked for some reason and I honestly don't know why.

Why does he struggle in the playoffs and other big games. Despite having such great offensive talent, why doesn't he

I say let them put their money where their mouth is, we won our division and they haven't gotten near theirs.

Ask Atlanta fans what they thought after January 8, 2012 (hint: a certain Georgia team managed 2 points against a 9-7 team with a bottom 5 regular season defense, and those 2 points were a safety).

To be fair the Falcons offense could have had 2 field goals but they chose to go for it on 4th down and their offensive line failed both times. Still the 49ers who ranked in the bottom tier did better offensively against the Giants. Joe would have been crucified for only putting up 6 points let alone 0. Matt has finally been questioned (locally) but he has continued to get a pass by the national media while Joe is their punching bag.

Good question... Its partly on Matt Ryan and partly on our Old OC.... Ill show you this qoute by Roddy white and another player
“We talked about trying to establish the running game because we didn’t think we could pass protect,” said Falcons wide receiver Roddy White, who was limited to five catches for 52 yards with a long of only 21 yards. “We played right into their hands. I mean, if they sack us every down and we can’t move the ball, OK. But let’s try.”

White’s remarks echo private comments of several other players who have pointed at a disconnection who offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey’s approach. Numerous players believe Mularkey is too conservative, particularly in tense situations like the playoffs.

Or as one player put it: “Something has to be said to [coach] Mike [Smith] this offseason.”
This is after the playoff lost vs the Giants.... PPl just look at the game and say.. Ryan didnt play more agressive but when your OC is playing scared and tentative predictable play calling... Ppl does not see that.. I can show you more qoutes with players like Tony Gonzalez (a future HOF) and saying simlar things.

As a whole last year we attempted just 20 screens for just 68 yards.....

Im not trying to throw full blame on Mularkey.. He did some good things for us but i think Ryan out grew his coaching.. Our team worked top notch when Ryan was allowed to control the game (no huddle) ... Roddy White said Coach Smith had to get us in and out of no huddle because Mularkey didnt "like" no huddle alot.

With the deep ball... I think Ryan problem is similar to the screen game... It wasnt called for him to go deep alot so he has to get better at his deep ball accurancy.... Most say he doesnt have a strong enough arm (he has gotten stronger this year.. His deep ball has looked good in camp) but most of his misses last year was over thrown more then under thrown.... I just think with more attempts and more practice at it (like this offseason) ... His deep ball will be much better.... The guy doesnt have a Flacco arm but his arm is well good enough.

I feel like th 35 pass stat is the most misleading stat of all... if you watch our games.. This team clearly lives and die by Matt Ryan play.... Its very very rare that Matt Ryan has a bad game and we win... During that Houston game.. It deoesnt show how Julio droped a game tieing TD or in that Tampa or saints (1st saints game) it doesnt say how Roddy dropped game winning catches (Rowdy lead the league in drops last year) ... Its just like the turner .. If he has 20 plus carries our record is such and such... Go look at Turners carry per average each game... besides 2 HUGE 10 yards a carry games (which made his stats look good) .. take away those.. He would average under 4 yards a carry last year.

Not downing our Weapons.. We have some of the best weapons in the league even with the drops.... Im just saying that stats does not tell the whole story.

But yea.. Back to the main topic... It was partly coaching (i waould say %65) and partly on Ryan who needs to grab the bulls by its hard and take over this offense/team like he seem to be doing... Dude is tired of hearing the playoff stuff... He can only fix it by winning.

I dont think his flaws is over looked.. Dude has been dogged out this year... Its just ppl also realize the guy did run a top 8 passing game in the league last year... He did throw for over 4000 yards, 29 TD's, and 12 ints.... All of his stats are top 8 (main categories) ... So you cant totally unleash on him... He had a good year.. You can only get on his bad parts which is his playoff record..

Thats my opinion on our situation.

No dude is getting question... Steve Wyche who has inside guys in the falcons organization and he knows the falcons.... He knows the deal.. He knows the mularkey stuff

Locally ... Fans just want to win now...

By the way.. the 3rd and inches and the 2 4th and inches on our side of the 50 vs the Giants had to be the most frustrating points of my falcon life... Our O-Line has to improve... We should get a little test tonight

Ryan is not ready to carry his team like Flacco does. When it comes down to winning a lot of games, Ryan does not have that winning spirit like Flacco does. I believe that once the game begins, we'll see who's the better QB.

This year is the year one will separate from the other...

Niether have the personal stats to separate from the other yet.
Obviously, flacco has the wins but for some reason has been ridiculed and scrutinized by the media way more than Ryan

No, no, no, no. Sorry. There is no one and I mean NO ONE who has more vanilla play calling nor more "play it safe" than Cam.
