The 2012 Olympics Thread

Since the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic games has just began, I thought I'd create a thread for any and all discussions about the Olympics.

What events are you all looking forward to?

Hard to get real excited when so few of the events will be shown live in prime time. The time difference is killing the thrill of watching. Still, I'll watch as much as I can.

Team USA basketball mostly. I'll also watch swimming and track and field as well.

I enjoy the Winter Olympics more. I'll watch snowboarding and hockey. I don't consider most of the events in the summer games to be sports, and I also don't really care. Even basketball isn't that exciting. The 3-point line is too close, and the only reason the US won't destroy any team they play is Bynum won't play and Howard is injured so they lack size. Generally USA basketball is like if Tyson fought an infant.

I do think it's interesting that they borrowed the set of The Shire for the opening ceremony, especially considering that was filmed in New Zealand.

I like the track and field events. The athleticism astounds me. I couldn't move that fast or jump like that even to save a baby from a burning building.

I also like the swimming since I grew up with it and come from a family of swimmers.

The swimming heats have been interesting so far. Phelps only just qualified for the 400m medley final, he'll be in lane 8.

The finals coverage starts at 7.25pm over here if that's any help. So 2.25pm your time.

The opening ceremony was a confused mess, too.

Also, Scottish, Irish and Welsh athletes are getting abuse for not singing "God Save the Queen" which is the English national anthem. It's like being pissed at Americans for not singing the Canadian National Anthem. Stupid.

They took softball, a sport which I played growing up and help coach now, out of the Olympics after '08, and so that left a bad taste in my mouth. However, I still love watching the games! I think gymnastics can win Gold, so I'm excited for that, but I also like watching the sports I can't see on a daily basis on television (sailing, archery, rowing, etc.)

Yeah I doubt he was going flat out since he's in so many races but he cut it close. He qualified by 0.07 seconds!

Phelps did that in the qualifying event here too. He is not in his prime any more which sucks.
I'm a swimmer so any of the swimming and diving events and water pole are my favorites. I used to play underwater water polo.
What's funny is I really tried to watch the opening but lasted until I got off the phone with a friend, tuned back to 4 hrs later to see them light the flame--- lighting the flame was cool.

I believe Phelps said he retired from the 400 IM after Beijing, so I'm guessing he didn't train that hard for this one. He'll get a few medals, from the group races if nothing else.

Being a baseball player I wish it was still in the Olympics because I would have watched most of it.

The women's handball was getting pretty intense today.
