Randy Lerner Sells The Cleveland Browns

40 posts in this topic

The Browns are for sale and it seems a group that is going to buy them consists of former Eagles Front Office member Joe Banner, and get this... someone who has been a minority owner of the Steelers.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/07/27/report-joe-banner-is-part-of-group-buying-browns/

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/07/27/haslam-has-been-a-minority-owner-of-the-steelers-since-2008/

Also Randy Lerner has been told that the Browns will not be moved and that they can't be moved unless Lerner heard any details of the proposal.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/07/27/lerner-receives-assurance-that-browns-wont-be-moved/

Thoughts?

i kinda could see this coming, i mean after all the Losing seasons.... and change after change after change, not enough revenue coming in.... and therefore not making enough money period. Tough times call for drastic measures and the writing is on the wall.

If the team wants good revenue to stay afloat, they got to at LEAST have a few winning seasons here and there to keep fans interest....

Jason La Canfora tweeted this regarding the sale...
Looks like Browns sale will come together quickly. Rooney's existing partnership could possibly absorb Haslam's shares of Steelers
Seems like things are moving along quickly here. Also Jason said that this sale would mean Mike Holmgren would be OUT in the deal.

Why not do this BEFORE he drafted a Runningback in the top 5 and a 29-year-old rookie QB then spent a top 40 pick next year on an average developmental receiver who's college numbers are laughably poor?

Maybe he knew it was coming and took a huge stinker on the Browns in return

This minority Steeler owner guys seems so weird. Said he was a Cowboy fan, a Colt fan, and then a Steeler fan (bandwagoner, cough, cough) and now he's interested in the Browns??

Should be interesting to see what happens with Mike Holmgren, I say he leaves at the end of the season, and the Browns again go through a whole new phase and hire new staff among the FO and the Coaching Staff.

Lol the fact that he's interested in the Browns proves he's not a bandwagoner... :)

Lol what a dysfunctional organization. Imagine being a Browns fan... what do you root for, the uniforms? ;)

I think I'd rather have a brand new expansion team, then the baggage that group carries with them. Like Clutch said, they've just spent two first-rounders - and have committed the money that goes with it - to a RB and a 29 year old rookie. Tying up top-5 money into a RB that won't make your team a contender... Well, I guess they have to start somewhere. :)

I have a question, where do I sign up to be Browns GM? I think I could do a better job than Holmgren, hell they should hire Clutch to be GM since he did so well as the Cleveland GM in our Mock Draft.

Honestly I don't think anything that happens to the Browns affects us in any way.
Actually it does... the new owner will have to buy the Browns from us... 'cause we own the Browns! ;)

I wont judge what Holgrems doing until the end of next year.....rebuilding a team, especially a Browns team has to be very hard and would take very long.

Exactly why you don't draft a 29-year-old QB and a top 5 Runningback who's likely to have an enormous amount of wear and tear by the time you have talent around him.

This...I like this.

Would mean that there'd be 3 teams that draft well (maybe 4 if the Bengals keep it up) in the AFC North, though. Tough sledding.

I agree about the 29 year old QB. Very risky move, it's like renting a vet QB, who is a rookie. But when you draft a RB that is being compared by most to Adrian Peterson you can do that.

I think about Steven Jackson, whenever the Rams are nice he will probably be done. I think the Browns have a more complete team right now then the Rams did. In fact, I think they're on the rise. It will be tough in our division, but look at the Orioles.

Yeah see, how nice of a Mod I am, I recommended you to be the Browns GM lol. You can take Cleveland, I like what I did with the Jaguars in the 2011 Mock so I'll wait for the current Gm to be booted out there in Jacksonville and become the Jaguars GM lol.

On a more serious note, I have never seen a revolving door of front office personnel like I have seen in Cleveland. It seems every time they come close to getting a team together with one GM and coaching staff, they oust those coaches and that GM and bring a whole new GM and coaching staff in and start over.

The Browns could be sold by August or even September and Holmgren could be out by Week 1.

I do feel bad for the fans, I went on my favorite Browns site and they were freaking out, they don't deserve this nor do the deserve the product on the field the last 13 years.

They are just cursed when hiring Front Office people. They just can't find the right people to turn them into a winning team, they need to hire new scouts so they can draft better, they need a better coaching staff and they were just dumb enough to hire Mike Holmgren when he never really had any experience in the front office.

Honesty I think the Browns need to move out of Cleveland. I'm not big on curses, but Cleveland just has a strange thing going on with it. The Indians haven't won in over 60 years despite having some very good teams. LeBron can't win a title in Cleveland, goes to Miami and does it 2 years in. The Browns can't win a Superbowl in Cleveland, move to Baltimore and win one five years later. Columbus has one of the best hockey players in the league in Rick Nash and can't get anything done - now he's in New York, and with Cleveland's luck the Rangers will win the Stanely Cup within 3 seasons.

Edit: I forgot - CC Sabbathia spends the better part of 8 seasons in Cleveland, and melts in the biggest game of his life. Signs with the Yankess, wins a WS ring in his first season. Manny Ramirez spends 8 years in Cleveland, and they melt in the 1997 WS (those two Mussina gems the Orioles blew still burn me). Goes to Boston, who hadn't won a World series in almost 80 years, and yes I know Man-Ram and some of those other Socks are steroid-using cheaters, but come on, the Red Sox had players as good or better in the past and couldn't win, but somehow they win 2 WS in 4 years.

Well it's official. The Cleveland Browns have been sold to Jimmy Haslam for more than one billion dollars.

Is anyone else enjoying the fact that the Browns have just been bought by a Steelers fan? But won't Haslam have to sell his portion of the Steelers to avoid conflict of interest?

Oh the world gets interesting in Cleveland again. And they are still going to suck.

Hopefully this doesn't mean that the worst franchise in NFL history will become a contender, does it?
Well, either way, we (and Cinci and Pitt) probably still have at least a more few good years of knocking the Brownies around.

If he's a REAL Steeler fan he'll run the Browns even farther into the ground. The Steeler-Browns rivalry goes way back.
