Upshaw Placed On Non-Football Injury List, But Off It Now

28 posts in this topic

From today's Late For Work blog:
Put the brakes on seeing Ravens 2012 top draft pick Courtney Upshaw begin his journey in helping fill the shoes of the injured Terrell Suggs.

The 6-foot-2, 272-pound rookie has been placed on the non-football injury list, according to Wilson. He is joined by Suggs and undrafted rookie tight end Bruce Figgins.

Players placed on the non-football injury list can be activated at any time, but it is unclear why Upshaw, who tweeted Sunday morning that he was ready to put in work, received the designation.

Wilson gives one possible scenario. “The designation can mean a player didn’t pass his conditioning test,” he wrote.
This is not good news. I hope it's just a 'training camp thing' and he's ready to go soon.

I cant imagine its anything but a conditioning test issue. Could re take it today and pass, and be back on the field Thursday.

If it's a failed conditioning test I'd be really disappointed.

Really? You have a chance to be a difference maker on one of the NFL's best defenses after being drafted by one of you're colleges best ever players and you can't stay in shape?

I really hope it's a minor, non-nagging, injury.

Hopefully it's something like Upshaw just tweaked his ankle during the condition test and the Ravens don't see a need to force him into running it again today. Let him rest up and do it tomorrow.

I actually would be very surprised if this were a conditioning issue. Saban puts his players through very very rigorous conditioning tests (20 - 110s) the very first day and Courtney has always done well in that category. I know a few players in the NFL and they have told me that conditioning tests in the NFL are a joke compared to college so I will be shocked if that is the reason why. I'm nervous about this news regardless of what it ends up being. No matter what... It most certainly won't be good news. Let's just hope it isn't his ankle. That caused him a lot of problems at Bama.

Gerry Sandusky Via Twitter:

"A failed conditioning test doesn't always mean a rookie's out of shape. Sometimes they get too psyched up and burn out. It takes some pacing"

As others have said..

UPDATED (11:39 a.m. ET): Upshaw has told reporters, including Ravens Insider, that he didn't pass his first conditioning test. But Upshaw also said he passed it in his second attempt, and he's been allowed to practice since.

I've always heard that the NFL conditioning tests are easy, they just require some level of technique or pacing themselves. Last year when Cody failed it, he passed it the next day and said that he just paced himself differently.

Glad to hear Upshaw retook and passed it!

Upshaw said he missed one walk through practice before passing the test the 2nd time and rejoining the team. Much like the rest of the offense, this was something that could have been viewed as a big deal, but it's not a issue at all.

According to some people, this could be viewed as just another black mark on the bad offseason we are having. :lol3:

The conditioning test is 25 yards. You run up and back six times in under :28-35 seconds, depending on position. :45 rest. Repeat 6 times. -via Gerry Sandusky's Twitter

Sounds almost like classic suicides I did for basketball.

Thats 50 yards X 6 X 6 = 1,800 yards. About 1 mile. All the running together is about a 6 minute mile (Assuming 30 second times) with 45 second rest intervals. The intervals playing a huge part for the sprints. (Math?)

I might (should) be able to pass this test.

Just wanted to chime in and offer a little insight from inside the Castle.

The conditioning test is made up of 6 25-yard shuttles (150 yards total). A player has to do 6 sets. Different position groups have different times to pass. For example, offensive linemen have 35 seconds to complete a set and get 70 seconds rest in between. Skill positions must run each set in a faster time and get less rest in between. If the player fails any of the 6 sets, he fails the conditioning test.

We made BaltimoreRavens.com's own Ryan Mink take the conditioning test today and he JUST passed by offensive linemen standards. We'll be posting the video of this a little later this week on the site. After watching it, you'll probably look at the conditioning test (and the guys who pass it) in a whole new light!

Thanks, that does shed more light on it. After learning something about it with Cody last year, I wasn't too concerned. Clearly the fitness level was there (Upshaw passed after all), but his strategy was flawed first time around. Came out too fast I bet.

It was a failed conditioning test which he passed on his 2nd attempt. The takeaway from this for Upshaw! Don't get too comfortable or else... so this is going to make him work harder, play harder and become a winner like the rest of the Ravens D!

Here's the link to Mink's blog about running the conditioning test: http://bmob.us/3gl

And make sure you check out the video of him running it. It shows how difficult it really is (and it's good for a few laughs too): http://bmob.us/3gm

The only thing that matters is that he passed his second test. Love how NFL Network was bashing Upshaw for failing the test but didn't even mention that he passed the test the second time. Get your facts straight NFL!

I really think that the first time that Upshaw flies into the backfield to make a sack the national media hacks will have to admit that he's the real deal. To Mink, most of us wouldn't be able to pass the conditioning test on the first dozen tries. I'm just curious how big guys like McKinnie and Cody do it?

And passing the test the second time on the same day is tougher because you have less in the tank. It was clearly a case of him not pacing himself right. If he can pass it after having already tried once that day, he's clearly in good enough shape to where we don't have to worry about him.

I like what Ray Rice said about Upshaw after practice today. I don't care about what it says about his weight on paper. Running into him is like running into a brick wall.
