EA to lose NCAA License?

23 posts in this topic

Apparently there has been a lawsuit settled and apart of the settlement includes EA losing the license to do NCAA games after NCAA 14(their last game in the current licensing deal) for 5 years and gives customers back money for games purchased since 2006.
EA will be responsible for establishing a $27 million fund for consumers who purchased Madden, NCAA, or AFL games since 2006. The distribution would be $6.79 for each PS2/Xbox/Gamecube title purchased and $1.95 for each 360/PS3/Wii title. Everyone who purchased one of these games was included in the class action suit unless specifically having opted out.

Additionally the settlement dictates that EA will not renew its current agreement with the NCAA – which is currently set to expire after NCAA Football 14 – for a period of at least five years. The company is also not allowed to make a deal with Arena Football for that same period. This will not affect any plans for exclusivity with the NFL though EA appears to be the less satisfied party between the two anyway.

This is pretty interesting, maybe this can be the start and someday someone else can be making NFL games. I also think another company could do well with College Football. I would really love to see what Sony could do with Football games because I am blown away by MLB The Show and I think they would make fantastic football games, NCAA or NFL. I like to see them get both so they can have the Import Feature to import Draft Classes.

Can you say NCAA The Show and NFL The Show?

I'd be more interested in NFL 2K15, or what have you. We as consumers benefited from the competition instead of just having EA shove it's guaranteed successes down our throats year after year. 2K has done a good job with basketball, and were making some very well regarded football games before EA bought their monopoly.

Another thought: why not license actual player names for NCAA and use that to pay the players a small stipend. I bet a lot of coaches would be on board with that and it could be a start to addressing one thing wrong with the NCAA.

I didn't understand the point of their class action lawsuit though.

Yeah and too bad they only went after the NCAA license, they should have went after the NFL License as well.

I have a xbox and to be honest Im not to big on exclusive titles. I've been wanting to play The Show for awhile, but Im not going to go out and get a ps3 just so I can play one game (Im not to interested in other ps3 games). For me exclusives take away from the gaming experience for everyone, so Id rather have one general NFL game for every system....

NFL2K anything completely obliterates any madden any day

God I hope it happens with the NFL. It is completely unfair to stick one NFL game out there for consumers and saying this is the only choice of NFL game you will be getting for the year.

you had to sign up with the lawsuit Prior to it going to court there was a website

note it doesn not include PC versions
I haven't looked into it but I thought you had to sign up to opt out, and everyone else was automatically part of the lawsuit?

Couldn't agree more. It would only help if they lose the NFL license also!!!

I wish the NFL would give 2k the right to a football game. I can't imagine how much better every single thing would be rather then EA.

No, MLB allows another gaming company to make games. I think there was a MLB 2k game but did Sony get exclusive rights recently?

There still is but The Show is so far superior that it's technically a monopoly.

Just because MLB 2k doesn't make a good MLB game doesn't mean it's a monopoly. A monopoly means that it would be exclusive to only one person. It's not Sony's fault that 2k doesn't put as much effort into their MLB game as much as they do.
Its not "technically" though, the only way it could "technically" be a monopoly is if the other company was losing rights say in 2 years time. Just because the other company is utter crap doesnt "technically" mean anything. Its still there, producing and we customers have a free choice to buy their product. Nothing "technical" about that.

You know exactly what I mean.

The only reason the 2K series is still selling any copies at all is because it's not PS3 exclusive like The Show. 'Cause the 2 games alone are day and night when it comes to everything but the commentary (and that's only because I'm a Gary Thorne homer).

Good I hope EA Sports withers away and dies at some point. The crappy games they put out and their refusal to fix the glitches, bugs and other anti-sportmanship in their games rates them losing their license. I can't wait until the day I can play a football game not associated with EA sports. And for the record I have all the Maddens from 2002 until the present and I bought the game each year for PS2 also until they stopped making it and Xbox and PS3 each year. They owe me some serious dough!

Nice. I have every madden from 05-12, except 11,10. 11 I refused to buy, and 10 I traded in.

I hope EA loses NCAA then EA will have football competition! Then maybe Madden will get a overhaul like 2013 did but every other year.... because lets face it, Madden has been the same thing for years now. What annoyed me is they would take a feature away 1 year and bring it back 2 years later... lmao wth? I didn't buy NCAA this year and don't plan to buy it either, I bought the past 3 years but its been the same game basically every year.

I hope EA loses it, because then I think EA will step up their game with Madden each year!
