So did we save any or make any cap room via this deal?
We are now $3.381M under the cap according to Aaron Wilson.

17 + 8 for first 2 years

5+5 for 3rd &4th year

with +5 million dollar incentives, which totals up to 40mill. I found out about it via scheffer/aaron wilson.

My analogy is that Ray Rice agent asked for AP/CJ2k money and wouldnt budge. So FO gave 17+8mill dollars for first 2 years (25mill for 2years) which is higher than AP/CJ2K price tag. I am assuming R.Rice's agent is up to his sleeve and will ask to renegotiate the deal on his 3rd year. By then it is up to Front office to see whether Rice has that kind of value to raise his salary when he turns 28.
That is my assumption on how this whole deal got done.

Why do people keep predicting this? Look what happened with this signing, his agent wanted big money, but did he get it no, and yet rice still signed anyway. Just cause his agent wants the ravens to sign rice to tons of money, doesnt mean rice wont sign in the end. In the end whos really signing the contract and making the final decision to begin with? Rice or his agent?

Perfect for Ozzie's late training camp pickups. We got Pollard and McKinnie that way!

Why do people keep saying he'll try and get a new deal come year 3, when the contract's value falls?

Ray Rice has just been playing on 500k a year without a single complaint, what makes people think that he'll demand a pay rise when he's earning 5 Million?

I don't get it either. As you said, Rice honored his rookie deal all the way through, I believe he'll do the same with this one.

Actually, the way the deal is structured makes it look like it is ripe for renegotiation after year 3 IF he is still productive. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing for either side.

I do too, but too often players do start complaining about their contracts before they are over - See Revis, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed - even though they are still being highly paid. Heck, even MJD is now complaining and he was also a guy who "would never complain about something like this".

The concern with Rice is just that his money drops percipitously over those last 2 years of the deal ($3M per) and, by then, other top tier RBs are going to be paid a lot more. Again, Rice doesn't strike me as the type to complain, but you never know.

One thing we do know - and I beat Rice and his agent have already been told/reminded of this - is that Ozzie isn't going to redo this deal. His history shows - see Reed, Ed and Lewis, Ray - that he's not going to redo or extend a long-term deal if/when the player starts complaining. He'll make Rice play the deal out.

Last contract ray Lewis played up til it expired.
I'd have to say that yes a lot complain about contract before they expire but it isn't just due to the money

He'll be what 28, 29? I guess we would just handle him like McGahee when that time comes.
...I'm not worried about it though. We'll just have to cross that bridge when we come to it lol.
That means that he'll get one more big contract as a Raven before retiring from the NFL. I keep forgetting how young Rice is.

Yes, he did, but he complained about it on several occasions beginning about half way through the deal, even though he was still being paid handsomely. It was just that other contracts started surpassing it and he wanted to be paid like those newer deals. Players often seem to forget (or have spent) about that huge signing bonus they've already received.

To an extent, it's the nature of the beast, but I do think the structure of Rice's deal, given the very low 4th and 5th year base salaries, could lead to those kinds of feelings on his part.

I think it's kinda scary how much of our cap is tied to Rice. That article scares me.
There is always risk when handing out a long term deal like that, but the Ravens clearly did well in this considering that Rice took more guaranteed money in lieu of more money overall like Lesean McCoy. If the largest cap hit is under 9M in the 3rd year i don't see too much too worry over. Of course injuries can happen, but Rice has been very durable and i cant imagine his production falling off a cliff any time soon.

Ngata has more of the cap tied to his deal. As a lineman he has as much if not more chance of being injured. And Yabda is no slouch either. His deal is also fairly fat. It is the nature of the beast. Risk versus reward.

They're saying it because other players have done it over the years i.e. Revis trying it now. But you're right, in theory after his 2000 YFS 2009 Rice could have tried something similar, and instead he played out his deal. No reason to think he won't do the same with this one. Overall, I've noticed over the years that just about every Raven understands what it means to honor a contract - maybe it's a trait the FO looks for, because I don't remember a single Raven who sat out or made a ridiculous demand - the one guy who even did something similar was Jamal, and I think that had more to do with the fact that we released him and his pride was hurt that the front office didn't think he was worth what they'd originally agreed to pay him.
