He said he would play in 2011 at a charity golf event - LINK

So maybe now this story - and the hate - will die!

Ed will be a Raven until the day he retires....no doubt, the Ravens may let him test the free agent market like they let Ray Lewis but he will see his real value is in Bmore

I don't know about the accuracy of this (and I don't think it's been updated since Rice got his new contract), but according to this link, Ed Reed is the second-highest paid player on the team in 2012 behind only Ray Rice:

http://www.sportscity.com/nfl-salaries/baltimore-ravens-salaries/

And according to this, he has the highest base salary among Safeties for the 2012 season:

http://www.spotrac.com/top-salaries/nfl/safety/

And he is 5th in what they call "average" salary, I assume that includes bonuses on top of the base, or something.
And he is 3rd in "Cap Hit" for Safeties.

He is one of the highest paid players on his team and at his position in the NFL, and he gets the full amount of his check because he doesn't have an agent. He has nothing to complain about as far as I'm concerned, and he is being selfish/childish.

you have that much confidence in a rookie and sean considine? Lol okay...
Not too much, but to flat out say "we wouldn't win without ed." shows a complete lack of confidence in the rest of the team. What you're saying is that the loss of one player (a safety at that) would hurt our team to the point that we wouldn't win.

well when you say "a safety at that" kind of belittles his hall of fame status, and the fact that it is a pass driven league, the secondary/pass rush combination is essential for a team to win. Given the fact that our star pass rusher is gone for the majority of the season, then hypothetically losing the best safety in the league....I love our team, but unless Joe burst out onto the scene, we'd be hard pressed to win the superbowl.

Would you be willing to give him a SB ring ala the Colts with Edgerrin James? Or would you be opposed to it since he didn't play out his deal or whatever the case was? I know the Colts situation was a little bit different because James contract was up when he left. Still just asking the question.

His teammates would and I'm not in a position to say no to what ray Lewis feels about Ed reed as a teammate

Remember when he went down a few years ago and the defense didn't miss a beat?

And the reason I said "a safety at that" is because I believe that safety may be the easiest position to replace on the defensive side of the ball. Especially considering that almost all Ed does is play center field. How hard is it to find a safety like Haruki or Zibby who can go back there, play safe, fundamental defense, and make tackles? Also, with our corners being such a strength, we don't really need as great a presence as Reed. I'm not trying to take anything away from Reed, I'm just saying that we could win without him. We are definitely a better team with him. But to say we wouldn't win without him is a bit much. With the shut down corners we have, and the front seven we have, losing Reed is not that detrimental. We could get by with another safety who's more fundamentally sound and plays his assignment.

Note: I actually do like Ed as a player and want him to be a Raven for his career.

I agree with what you said, but its nice to have a Reed type player back there, simply because QB's fear him, where as an unknown player may get tested more often. I didn't say we wouldn't win at all, I just don't think we'd make it to the superbowl without him....at least I wouldn't want to, he's probably the most deserving player of a ring the NFL bar none.

All you need to know about that is Tom Bradys wrist band.
She has "Find #20 on EVERY PLAY " ( Caps hers )

If a player like Tom Brady has that level of respect / fear for Ed Reed, every QB should.

hahahaha. I can't begin to describe how much I hate the patriots, and their fans....such terrible football. How could you cheer for a team that gets so much support from the refs....despicable.

I'd say no. I get the neck thing with Ed, but the fact is he can choose to play or not. If he chooses to retire, then he will not be on the roster when we win. Barry Sanders is, was, and will probably always be the greatest player in Detriot Lions history. He, more than any other player I can think of, did more for a franchise with quarterbacks like Don Majkowski, Erik Kramer, an aged Dave Kreig, and was beaten by guys like Brett Favre. He gave everything he had for the Lions - and if they were to win a Superbowl, he wouldn't get a ring. You have to be a part of the team that wins it all in order to get that ring, that's what it means. That's why there are many HOFs without rings and many, many more players with rings who aren't HOFers, who didn't mean anything to their franchises in the grand scheme of things.

LOL, that was too far. We have won without Ed before (2010) and if we can win without Ray we can win without Ed. Is that the most desirable situation???? Not at all, but it has and can be done again.

 You mad?

You posed a nice hypothetical question, but Ed was never going to walk away from the game this off-season.

Not really. You took exception to my question, I took exception to your answer. It's all a cycle. Funny thing though is....training camp is here yet you're still posting in here. Good times I see. :-P

I figure as a new guy I should make it known that I admire Ed Reed very much. I think that his anticipation and vision is unrivaled by any player in his category.

When it comes down to it, I feel that as an organisation it would be a bad move to make him unhappy. We would have a fairly big hole without him. Obviously if he wants ridiculous money then reject and negotiate. But the way I see it, its unlikely we will have this dilemma as we won't be in a Superbowl without him.
