Browns Select Baylor Wr In The Second Round Of The Supplemental Draft

19 posts in this topic

I personally think this is a good move for them going forward, however spending a second round pick on him is quite a reach. That being said I really like his skill-set and talents; he and Little could develop into a nice tandem. Its a gamble, but it could end up being a great move for them.

What are your thoughts on this aggressive move by the Browns.

Terrible. I feel bad for Browns fans. Gordon was incredibly overhyped. He had one season at Baylor where he was semi-productive (in a spread offense none the less). Good size and average speed for a WR. He was never asked to run routes and he isnt special in any other manner.

The Browns are essentially giving up a top 40 pick for a prospect who has potential. He is extremely raw (think Stephen Hill) and will likely have little impact at all this season. There would have been much more valuable players available with this pick come next year's draft.

I understand the desire to surround Weeden with more offensive weapons, but at this point they are just compounding the mistake of taking Weeden early by using another high draft pick on a project.

My problem is they're trying to mask the possibility that Weeden might not be good. They could give him two true #1 receivers and just be happy with a mediocre season, expecting that he's just going through rookie struggles. But in actuality he might never be good, and the receivers could be the only thing preventing them from seeing that. It's like what the Jags did drafting Blackmon. You could spend all your picks bolstering the receiving group, but with Gabbert at the helm you're still going nowhere.

They reached for him and I didn't expect him to go until at least the 4th, earliest being third round.

Luckily the kid is only 21 so he'll have plenty of time to develop his rookie season. In all honesty the Brown just need someone who can catch the football. I agree he was overhyped.

In all honesty, I thought the Redskins would have gave up a 3rd or 4th round for Gordon to give RG3 someone he is familiar with and a young receiver as well.

Agreed.

Just like poor drafting teams, selecting a supplemental player for need, at a higher round due to need, is a mistake that desperate teams make. The Browns could have offered that 2nd round pick to a number of teams for a starter-quality WR - like GB, who has more recievers then they need.

Cleveland seems to never learn.

It's wierd/funny reading all these comments because my name is Gordon, lol.

I think it's a good move. Holmgren is no dummy, Browns needed a reciever, and made sure they got the one they liked.

So true. I really liked the drafting of Trent Richardson and thought it was an excellent move by Cleveland to get him even though it was dumb to give up what they did to move up 1 spot. I thought maybe Cleveland finally had the guy who could help turn them around, and I thought they had smartened up. Then came pick 22 when they passed on David Decastro for Brandon Weeden, right then I knew that they were still the Browns. Now you add in giving up what most likely will be a high second round pick in 2013 Draft for a player in the supplemental draft?

It seems no matter what they just never have the right people in the front office who can actually help them turn around and win games. They are cursed when it comes to picking Front Office people.
that second round pick could be very high though, anywhere between 33 - 40 more than likely, there passing up on someone that has probably a hell of a lot more potential

I thought he was going to be selected by the Redskins in the 4th.

I bet the Browns could have gotten him in the 3rd.

A 2nd is pretty high. I heard John Clayton saying he would have been a first if he stayed in school. Idk though, apparently he's a high risk high reward project and when your Cleveland I think you can afford to do that.
i would look at it the other way around. Us, NY giants, Pitts, ie the best teams, can afford to do that, the worst teams, ie the browns, cant really, and shouldnt really, be wasting picks on a guy that is a huge risk, even more so with so high a pick. This time next year they could potentially have got someone with as high a ceiling but more complete, and would make more of an immediate impacting, helping turn the franchise around.

Teams like them, need help, immediately, and can afford to miss to often or they will be perennial losers for a long time

What a terrible move. A 2nd round pick is rare in the supplemental draft. I am shocked it happened. I can't check right now but has anyone ever spent a 2nd round pick in the supplemental draft? I don't remember it.

Anyway, I am left scratching my head here. I thought the projected 3rd round grade was too high. This is ridiculous.

Oh well. Less people in front of the Ravens in the 2nd round.

Doesn't change the fact that they bet their short term future on a rookie qb who will be 30 next October (perspective - when Joe turns 30 he will have played 7 full seasons in the NFL).

im happy they did it, since they had 2 first round picks, and essentially screwed one of them up by taking weeden, then surrendering a 2nd next year....must suck to be a Browns fan. There were so many good prospects they forfeited to take a 28 or 29 year old QB. QB's need 3 to 4 years to develop sometimes, especially if they're projects...by then weeden will be considering retirement.....QB's in our division don't last until 40.
