Cundiff went 4-7 today while Tucker went 5-6.
It seems Tucker is just outshining Cundiff and it will be very interesting to see how the Pre-Season plays out. How much playing time does Cundiff and Tucker get? If Tucker shows the same thing in pre-season games he has shown in practice, he'll get the job.

Very interesting that Tucker has the stronger leg on kickoffs. I was thinking that Billy's skills on kickoffs would help his case to beat out Tucker, but with your observations, it may be the other way around. This is quite the position battle.
Yea, Billy has a strong leg as well, it's just not as consistent as Tucker's. Billy will boom one kick, and seem to not hit the next one as well. Tucker seems to just boom his kicks consistently, but has accuracy as well. Maybe it's the younger leg of a guy pumped up for his 1st NFL camp. But from what I saw Tucker clearly has the bigger leg.

I won't be able to make the open Practice Saturday, but I will definitely be watching the Falcons game on the 9th. How great is it they are already showing the promo commerical for the game, so pumped.

Lets hope that Cundiff falls apart.

We won't know anything until a couple of games into the preseason... rumblings have been that it's Billy's job to lose and that Tucker is going to have to really wow Harbs and Rosburg in order to supplant Cundiff.

Sometimes the wrong guy gets the job. Cundiff came in here and won the kicking contest by kicking the ball out of the end zone on kickoffs. The NFL moved the ball up closer but he didn't kick it as far last year as in 2010. Now, we must make a decision for the future. Do we go with the kid with the accurate, strong leg who can make a 32-yard kick or do we go with the guy who cost us a chance for a trip to the Super Bowl? I'll take my chances with the rookie.

Any capologists around?

Signed a five-year, $15 million and is only one year into it

I'd love to know what the dead money will be if he gets cut

I've been googling but not even this website gave info on guaranteed money.
I wouldn't claim to understand a lot of the contract/dead money stuff, just interested

I'm rooting for Tucker as well, but how do we know he can make the 32 yarder under pressure? I just feel like that's a poor argument to justify his place on the team. We won't know if Tucker can make that kick until it really happens.

I can explain why Cursona Pirate is the biggest Cundiff fan. Its because he got a free autograph hat from Billy a few years back.

I'm thinking about sending an autograph to Pirate myself so that I can rack up some fanboys around here. (Does that sound right?)

Billy also is a great person in the community. Another reason why I like him and many of our Ravens. They have character. Bro.

It's time for a change. Justin is kicking the ball better right now. Don't worry Billy, you will do well in Saskatchewan with the Roughriders.

I posted this earlier on The Five Ravens To Watch:

I am actually surprised, because I didn't think Tucker would hold up. He went undrafted and four kickers were taken in the draft, so Ozzie may have found a gem here. I still want to see him preseason games before I officially decide for myself, but so far Tucker is clearly winning the competition. My only fear is that Tucker wins the competition and the FO decides to stick with Cundiff and Tucker gets snatched up and has a elite career on another team. Something to keep in mind though, there are a few more very tight competitions going on with other teams and there are a few teams having to make some tough decisions like the Jets where Josh Brown is giving Nick Folk a run for his money. Also, the Saints have a good battle going between Garrett Hartley and John Kasay.
Others to watch:
Panthers: Justin Medlock v. Olindo Mare
Chargers: Nick Novak v. Nate Kaeding (Not sure how Nate is recovering but if Nick is cut, he did very well last year when Nate went down)

If Cundiff is still shakey and Tucker tanks in preseason, I personally would not be surprised to see one of these other guys here when some of those teams I mentioned make their cuts.

Billy Cundiff missed yet another kick today from 43, while Justin Tucker hit all 5 of his attempts. The kid came to win a spot as the Baltimore Ravens kicker and he's not backing off.

As of right now I see no reason to keep Cundiff over Tucker. Tucker is making more kicks in practice and assuming he continues that through the preseason the only advantage the veteran Cundiff should have is experience. However, we know he can't make the pressure kick so what does that matter. It doesn't mean Tucker will make the pressure kick either but we KNOW Cundiff can't so I say we give the young guy a chance.

I know it's unlikely but if Tucker keeps doing well, they should just cut Cundiff and go with Tucker as the starter and get it over with.

BR.com tweeted that Justin Tucker also showed off his punting skills today ontop of going 6 for 6 in FG attempts.

Now the kid is just showing off haha.

No serious, having a Kicker who can also punt is great because, if anything should happen to Sam Koch during a game, we don't have to have a QB or position player punting. We can just use Tucker to get us through that game. You rarely see punters get hurt, but it's still possible.

Harbs said they are putting the Kicker in game like situations so every make or miss is big imo, because it's game like conditions minus the actual pressure. But on the other hand there is pressure because this seems to be a real battle, so every miss kick just basically gives the other guy the upper hand. So while there isn't game pressure, these 2 guy still have a lot of pressure on them. For Cundiff this could be the last shot he has to keep his career alive, and for Tucker, this is his shot at living his dream.

Tucker said his strong suit was clucth kicking, the guy doesn't look like a liar so far.

Honestly, if Tucker keeps it up during what's left of training camp and the preseason, there's no reason why he shouldn't make the team.

As fo right now, based of the BR.com and Aaron Wilson tweets......

I have Billy Cundiff at 30 of 37 81%........Justin Tucker at 34 of 36 94%.

Cundiff isn't doing a poor job, but as of now, Tucker is clearly out kicking him. Things could quickly change for any reason, but the kid seems really consistent and I'd have to give him the upper leg(pun intended).

Also I wonder what the mindset of Cundiff is right now. He's missed at least 1 kick 3 consective days at of practice, in front of the same players i'm sure he feels like he let down just 6 short months ago. It's looking like Cundiff will have to be very mentally strong to remain the kicker of this team, and I'm not so sure he's displaying that right now.

per Tom Lombardi, Ravens would save $2.2M in cap space with Cundiff’s departure. They would have to carry dead money of $600K in '12, $1.8M in '13 to offset the bonus paid to Cundiff in 2011.

hope that helps.

There is a reason...Tucker is a rookie. Very rarely do teams with Championship aspirations go into the regular season with a kicker that has never made an NFL kick. If he folds under the pressure of the NFL kicking game Harbs will be crucified. I'm not saying that Cundiff should win necessarily, but his experience gives him an edge. We all remember his misses of course, but he has also made a lot of big kicks.

I would say based off those numbers in practice as of now, I actually would feel comfortable with Justin Tucker as our Kicker if it came down to Game Winning situations in the 4th quarter. I mean he has missed 2 compared to 7 missed for Cundiff. Right now I think Tucker is showing that while he is a rookie Kicker, that we can trust him to make that Kick when it counts, but hopefully we have enough offensive power to where we only need Tucker for Extra Points.
