MERGED: Jaws QB Countdown

26 posts in this topic

I wonder how many people have actually been watching these segments on ESPN. I've seen it from the beginning, and I must say, I've agreed with the list wholeheartedly from the start. It's not one of those BS sports writer's lists who puts Tebow in his top 10 (because IDK, he wins somehow!), or Alex Smith and Joe Flacco in the 20's somewhere (they only win because of defense...) with Stafford way up the charts (he done threw 5000 yards!).

Unlike most columnists or analysts, Jaws actually looked at every snap by every QB this year and has concrete examples to back up his claims. And, unlike, say, Jaime Dukes or Heath Evans, Jaworski has actually PLAYED quarterback.

30: Tebow
29: Gabbert
28: Ponder
27: Flynn
26: Moore
25: Kolb
24: Fitzpatrick
23: Sanchez
22: Cassel
21: Palmer
20: Bradford
19: Dalton
18: Hasselbeck
17: Freeman
16: Smith
15: Newton
14: Stafford
13: Schaub
12: Vick
11: Ryan
10: Romo
9: Flacco
8. Cutler
7. Rivers
6. Roethlisberger
5. E. Manning
4. P. Manning
3. Brady
2. Brees
1. Rodgers

My only complaints would be that Garrard should be on the list and that Freeman shouldn't be above Hasselbeck and Dalton, but other than that this list is good. I'm not just saying that because he has Flacco in the top 9. Frankly, I wouldn't complain if he had Joe at 13. It's rare to find a list in the media that's actually respectable.

Is he basing this mostly off the 2011 season? Either way, you can guarantee Jaws is going to draw fire from the masses for having him above the latest five or so guys on the list so it's going to be interesting to see how he reasons Flacco being so high.

Jamie Dukes freaked out when the PLAYERS rated Flacco above Romo. Now Jaws does it too. Dukes is going to need drugs for this. :-)

Interesting, so ONCE AGAIN a former quarterback ranks Flacco as a top 10 quarterback, and above Ryan, Romo, Vick, and Shaub.

A/N: He seems to think pretty highly of Cutler, too. I imagine it will be Joe and Cutler at 8 and 9, or 9 and 8, then Rivers, Peyton, Roethlisberger, Eli, Brees, Brady, Rodgers. That's how I would have it, given Rivers has no rings and Peyton is coming off an injury, Ben off a bad playoff loss, and Eli just doesn't have the consistent numbers of the top 3.

I always liked Garrard, yep he should be somewhere on that list

It's not a bad list, hard to disagree with a lot of it
And he was a former QB so worth listening too

I might leave Gabbert outside it though, he is a starting QB but I can think of a few backups in the league I would rather have.
I never liked Gabbert as a 1st round pick and when you consider Chase Daniel achieved more success in Missouri and had to go as a UDFA to the Redskins and now with the Saints it's pretty ridiculous Gabbert went 1st round

edited for spelling

I haven't found an official site keeping the list but here it is so far:

Maybe he thinks Garrard won't see the field? I could see Moore starting, and if he gets pulled the Dolphins going to Tannehill before Garrard.

My guess is Garrard isnt on the list because he didnt play last season. Isnt this ranking based on last season's film study?

So In the midst of a very depressing last two weeks of sports for me,(Heat winning the NBA championship, Cavaliers having a DREADFUL draft, Orioles losing) I have been tuning in to ESPN watching Ron Jaworski's QB countdown of the top 30 QB's in the league. I turned it on while Matt Ryan was being ranked at number 11 and only had one thing on my mind: Here is where we cue the Matt Ryan being ranked ahead of our much more deserving Joe Flacco. Surprisingly enough after I checked the list from 11-30, Joe's name wasn't on there. I then watch when number 10, Tony Romo is announced. I see the remaning QB's in the top 9 are: Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Jay Cutler, Eli Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger, Peyton Manning, Phillip Rivers, and of course, our own Joe Flacco.(not in any order yet) Not bad company if you ask me. Jaw's must feel that Joe is a top 10 Quarterback. I think that Joe could very well be the 8th ranked QB on Jaw's countdown ahead of both Cutler and Rivers. Pretty exciting stuff.

Very happy that Jaws showed Joe some major love. I respect him alot more now. Everyone else on ESPN is now saying how overrated he is. I really just don't get the hate at all.
My guess is the list will finish like so...
8. Rivers
7. Cutler
6. Roethlisburger
5. Eli Manning
4. Peyton Manning
3. Brady
2. Brees
1. Rodgers

I'm not sure if that's why, but right now Garrard is looking like the starter (which would be smart IMO).

As someone said, it might just be because of last year's film. Luck, RGIII and Weeden aren't on the list, and Tebow's a backup who made the rankings.

I guess Jaws is entitled to his opinons just like the other talking heads..but with him being a former QB i would respect his a bit more.

Bill Polian also thinks highly of Joe and thinks he'll have his best year with the addition of Caldwell. I think we'll end up looking back and praise Ozzie for the Caldwell signing. I'm ready for the season to start!

I haven't been watching, but have to say the list looks pretty solid. One could argue on many fronts about a player moving a couple of spots one way or the other, but Jaws seems to have nailed it. I wonder if ESPN is going to be letting him go after this list is done.

Anyone know where I can find vids of the past episodes?

Why isn't Colt McCoy on the list?
While you may be joking, I'd think I'd rather have McCoy than Gabbert

Or you know not have either and actually get a vet QB.

The same reason Painter and Grossman aren't. They're not going to be starting. Weeden will take McCoy's place.

Jaws and Gruden are thew only people on ESPN that have truly respectable things to say, sure they're bias to an extent as everyone is, but they do a far better job at hiding it than the other analysts on that program

I been watching the countdown for a while, but i missed the Joe segment which is ironic. As soon as i saw Tebow at 30 I knew this list would be respectable. It isn't about only stats which i like about people like Jaws.

I have to agree with you, friend - "Jaws" has been there, and back again. He knows whereof he speaks.

Cutler at #8? Is Jaws on crack cocaine? Cutler is extremely inconsistent!
I'd have Romo at #8 and Cutler at #10, but I dont think he is too far off. Cutler has done pretty well in a bad environment in Chicago. He has had even worse OC and WR corps than Joe! Last season it was all starting to come together, but Cutler's injury derailed their season.

Cutler at 8 is about right, I put him at 7 even. The Bears were heading to the playoffs and fell apart once they lost Cutler and Forte due to injuries. The Bears no doubt make the playoffs without the injuries to Cutler and Forte. If the Cutler and Forte stay healthy and Forte doesn't hold out, the Bears should help put 2 NFC North Teams into the playoffs.

Jaws said he watched every throw from every quarterback, hours and hours on each guy. I'd say this might be one of the best quarterback lists ever made, simply because you have a guy who 1) actually played the position for a long time with decent success, and 2) put in more effort to study each QB than probably anyone else (save Greg Cosell, maybe).
