After We Won The Superbowl?

13 posts in this topic

I've been wondering this for awhile. When we won the Superbowl in the 2000-01 season, I was only three years old. I had not yet developed my love for the Ravens like I have now. I was just a little kid. But, once I grew to like football, I became a Ravens fan. Since then, I've always noticed that the media doesn't really include us in anything. I mean, they acknowledge that we have great players. We win awards, and have multiple people on the NFL's Top 100. But other than that, we get hardly anything. I'm sure you all notice that.

I was wondering, after we won our first and only Superbowl in 2001, did we get shown in the media a lot? Was ESPN talking about us a lot?

For example: Were they being like ESPN is now with the Miami Heat? Showing them A LOT? OR were they just doing like they normally do, just a little more?

Yes we were being talked about everywhere. We were the stars of a new HBO series called "Hard Knocks" the traing camp after we won. So yes, you could say we had some media attention. Nothing like the Heat are getting right now.

Any team after winning the superbow will get attention, especially in the fashion we did, one of the best defenses of all time. But as the years went on we just get pushed back and a lot of that is due to inconsistency, referring to us getting respect or credit. With such a great defense we should of appeared in a least one more super bowl.

Wow how to make me feel old lol 3?
We lost a lot of the accolades we should have gotten because of 9/11. Our MNF game was in January instead of September. I love all the pop up t shirt and trinket places on every other corner, because it was not easy to find Ravens stuff back then.

Of course we got a lot of the medias attention, every team does after they win a superbowl. But as bMore said, we didn't get nearly enough as the heat are getting now or the celtics got in '08 (NBA). If I were to compare us to any team in any sport, I'd go for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA. They're always pretty quiet, but a very stable team with old vets like us. They always get very far, same as we do and have a solid record throughout pretty much every season. It's an OK comparison I'd say.

Anyway, we're a team that has never been very acknowledged. Probably because teams with great offenses and huge playmakers like Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers who're putting up great numbers are drawing a lot of the medias attention. Had we been breaking single season records on D or offense even, I'm quite convinced that we'd be getting more attention. I wouldn't want that though, I kinda enjoy being the underdog and having our team proving the critics wrong (sup Skip Bayless).

Thats a great comparison and id have to agree with it, about the spurs. We will never be a major market team because we dont put up 45 pts a game and allow 38. I really hope we dont try to go towards that type of play, i like our rough defense and run the ball mentality, although when ray rice gets 7 carries i dont really see what we are trying to do. Skip will never give us credit until we win another superbowl and i dont think we will anytime in the future, in a way i dont blame him.

I kind of think some of the treatment we get is mislead, due to the fact that ray lewis had that issue in that murder case and then jamal lewis' issues. most people think the ravens are a bunch of thugs, which i dont know of a single one that is really "gangster" like at all. Just an observation

The people that bring up Rays issue and Jamal's really don't know much about our team. The Steelers have been taking a lot of heat the last couple of offseasons, of course there is the Bengals--good thing their uni's already have stripes lol, and this year Detroit players have been racking up some really bad PR. Every team goes through it, laugh today but it could be our team next off-season.
According to the database Seattle is catching up lol

There are entirely too many reasons why the media doesn't give the Ravens any POSITIVE coverage; none of which are relevant when you think about it. They do it simply because they like hearing us complain.

Very good points.

First of all, the NFL is all about marketing. They loved the "feel-good story" of the Saints providing hope to the people of New Orleans. They love it when New York and New England - big market teams - win big. Like you noted, they love a high scoring (45-42) shootout, which New England, Green Bay and New Orleans - excellent Offenses with marginal Defenses - provide them. And (normally) they hate the run-first, strong-defense mindsets that Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Tampa Bay, Kansas City, Tennesee and San Francisco have developed over the last decade. All of those teams except the Steelers are not "media darlings" because of their style of play - except the Steelers have such a strong national following.

But I wouldn't trade the glossy glitter and the sucking-up of Chuckie, Phil Simms and Jaws for the Ravens' D-First viewpoint. The old smashmouth, January on natural grass defensive struggle games of years ago is what I love - I hate the shootouts in domes football that's ruining the tradition of the NFL and its roots. I'll take the Baltimore Ravens - they can keep the Saints, Packers, Giants and Patriots, and their 55 pass attempts per game...

Completely agree about the marketing, anything to create a story is who will get some attention. I remember when we drafter Oher and his story came out, that was a brutal upbringing, great movie to. But its no suprise that we as ravens fans like the defensive games more. I think true football fans would rather watch a ravens steeler game than a lions saints game for the mere fact of the brutal hits, fundamental discipline, etc... Most of the fan base of the NFL are not die hard fans, they are just along for the ride (IMO), although i think it says quite a bit they we get some acknowledgement as the best rivalry in sports today, ie ravens steelers.
