Tight End - Who Stays And Who Goes?

So, is it safe to assume Bajema is the 3rd TE? Clearly they don't have too much faith in Drew.

I would say so. I like Bajema as our 3rd TE, but I dont see how he's going to help us in the pass catching department while Pitta is out. Im keeping my fingers crossed that we get Pitta back in time for the opener.

What makes you think this guy will definitely be the #3TE? I'm not the biggest fan of Drew's but Harbs has praised him a couple times this camp.

Seems like the Ravens want to see how Drew can hold up in the blocking game as a deciding factor of if he can be the #3 TE or not.

I think the simple fact that we signed Bajema says a lot about the coaches' faith in Drew and the rookie TEs. Bajema isnt really a replacement for Pitta, because he is a blocking TE, and therefore shouldnt contribute very much at all as a receiving TE. I see Bajema sliding into that #3 blocking TE role that Kris Wilson occupied last season. I really dont see Drew making the final 53, unless Pitta has to miss an extended period of time. Maybe Drew has some skill as a blocker, but I think Bajema will beat him out for the #3 TE spot.

But wouldn't the same be true on the opposite side of it? If the Ravens were so focused on having a true blocking TE at #3, why would they allow Kris Wilson to walk?

What did signing Tony Wraggle say about the younger olineman? What did signing Logan Payne say about Doss and LQW? Right now it's just a signing of a guy who the Ravens feel can add to the team. He'll have to prove his worth of that #3 TE spot. Just because he's started for some other teams doesn't mean he'll be good enough for the Ravens.

Right now the Ravens are putting Drew to work to see if he can be a good enough blocker to hold that #3TE spot. He's a really good pass catcher, so the Ravens would have options in a 3TE set to attack defenses even more. Come out in a jumbo set with Dickson, Pitta, and Drew at TE, Leach and Rice in the backfield. Then take Dickson and Pitta, split them out wide with Drew staying at TE.

I'm not saying he'll make the team simply for that, or that Bajema can't do that as well. I just don't think this guy is a lock to make the team, if we liked him that much, why did it take a injury to Pitta for us to bring him in?

Well I think Bajema was one of the best TEs left on the free agent market, while Wragge and Payne are good depth players, but I dont think they are expected to contribute all that much. Bajema, while Pitta is out, is battling with Drew for a #2 TE spot, a significant role.

That said, I definitely agree that he is no lock to make the roster. He'll have to earn his spot, just like Drew will have to do. I do feel that Bajema has a good chance of beating out Drew for the #3 TE spot though, and his experience will definitely help.

Oh yea both of those guys should get some quality snaps with Pitta out during the preseason.

I wouldn't count out Balasavage, or Figgins just yet. Both of those young guys are talented. So the loss of Pitta is big for those guys as well

I think we only keep two TEs on the roster this year. Just my two cents.
I agree we only need Dickson and Pitta and we could use the roster spot for someone else. We don't need another one because we can use Ed or Pitta on the PAT and use Jah Reid and other lineman on the jumbo packages. That's the only things Wilson was used for last year.

Maybe it was just a really bad day for him but davon drew dropped ALOT of easy balls at the bank. Wasnt to pretty
You sure that wasnt Dickson? :) Also, not concerned about Drew (who will NEVER see live action) dropping balls!

Seriously, though, how did Dickson look?

He missed the majority of practice yesterday after he got poked in the eye. Drew was running with the 1's!

I would rather keep 7 WRs than keep 3 TEs. We don't need a 3rd blocking TE, something a lineman can do reporting as a TE. But, I feel the Ravens will keep 3 TEs because that's what they've always done and in that case Drew would be the choice. He has experience and has shown he can catch the ball.
I agree with 3 tight end set because the guards and the fullbacks take care of a handful of blocking for the Ravens offense..

Thank goodness...I hate how other teams are using their guards and fullbacks primarily for pass catching ;)

Using a lineman instead of a TE is not a good option the majority of the time. Defenses will simply adjust to the extra offensive lineman, it actually makes it easier on a defense when you limit your offensive weapons.

A third TE should be much more than a "blocking TE". A third TE should be able to come in on two TE sets due to injury. A third TE should be a journeyman who is at least average as a blocker and a pass catcher.

Says who?

When the ball is out of the Qb's hand the Lineman is done protecting the qb and is able to leave his line of scrimmage position and go out in the open field and block other assignments...

I never thought of that. That's pretty genius! I think you're on to something brilliant.

I'd like to see us replace guys who can't catch before they cost us a big game. Nobody really improves hands, you can either catch or can't.

I hope we only carry Dickson and Pitta. We could definitely use the roster spot for someone better and the only thing we used Wilson for last year was PAT's. This only works if Pitta is healthy by week 1.

I disagree. When you have an offense that features tight ends so prominently, you should carry at least three tight ends. We have a tight end heavy offense. Why on earth would we carry just two?

Looks like we have to shelve our top two TEs for majority of Preseason.

If Davon Drew can't take advantage of this opportunity, then his career might be done here.

Cam better adjust and use more 3 WR sets where the WR Corps is deep.

Billy Bajema might be our best blocking TE due to his experience and time in the league.

Crazy Bill is a keeper but it will likely come down to who contributes to special teams the most,,,,,,,I agree with a few of the comments especially on Dickson being a problem waiting to happen , I don't think his football IQ is very high,,,,,,,,also , you can't compare any of our TE's to Jermaine Gresham , that's the guy the Ravens really wanted , remember,,,,,,,,,,,,Pitta is the man...............Crazy bill may end up being the second best , who knows......

Dickson and Pitta both have tremendous upside however, imo Pitta should be the starter! but both of them need to work on their run blocking skills.
