This (2012) Off Season Has Been Pretty Bad For The Ravens

I spoke to soon...
Just heard on the Fan, Ngata is way to heavy, thus why he failed his conditioning test (pulled a hammy)
and
McKinnie was a no show and Harbaugh quoted "not sure when he will be back"

It's early so this could all be water under the bridge, but if the Ravens want a Super Bowl win, things need to pick up.
Its good to see Ray Lewis a little lighter, it will help in pass coverage in today's game.

McKinnie wasn't that good last year. There's a reason the FO wanted him to get in better shape and may let him go. Ngata is back to his old playing weight after experimenting with weight loss last year. Every team has some sort of bad news in the offseason and it's better if that happens earlier than later. As long as the news is positive within the last few weeks of the preseason I'm happy.

Because Ozzie isn't stupid.

Just stupid enought to pay players like Lee Evans to drop passes....

Sigh.

I really don't see how you could call the off-season bad. Sure we lost Suggs but it gives younger players a chance to step up and give his eventual replacement some game experience. Rice, Flacco and Reed no problem. Ngata is ideal weight, McKinnie is getting there and the unit is growing stronger.

Lets go Ravens!

Maybe the organization put out a MIA on McKinnie and he saw that and thought that the Ravens wanted him to go to Miami.

Okay, who does he replace? Boldin? Nope! Smith? Nope! 3rd WR with a propensity to drop the ball, be somewhat of a malcontent and also shoot himself? Ha, no thanks!

This really wasn't a "pretty bad" off season for the Ravens. We kept the majority of our core group together. I don't think the loss of JJ will effect us much, with Kruger entering his third season I think he will emerge if he can play the run. Also I believe Kindle will see some increased playing time. I do think the losses of our backup safeties may hurt our depth. The loss of Grubbs will also hurt us but the O-Line situation will play itself out by week 1 hopefully. Other than that there's not really many other improvements we can make with the current salary cap situation. Baltimore Fans see no significant additions to the team this year and automatically think its a bad off season, but keeping the majority of our core group together will prove that this was not a great, but solid off season.

I think the front office did another excellent job dealing with free agenxy and our own players, the only part I was a little let down about was how the draft played out...but we still don't know what we got not until at least another 2 years or so

Every year threads just like this one come out. And do we ever have a terrible season? Not since 2007!
Here are our teams major losses and how I think they effect us:
G Ben Grubbs: the loss of the younger Grubbs in free agency hurts, especicially with an old line. The Ravens brought in a few lineman to help make up for the former Pro Bowler signing with the New Orleans Saints,
WR Lee Evans-for the best.
RB Ricky Williams-the retirement of Williams was a blow to the Baltimore Ravens. The veteran would often come in to relieve Ray Rice and was a very valuable asset last year. However, the Ravens have many younger backs in Anthony Allen, Bernard Pierce, Damien Berry, and Bobby Rainey who all look to help replace him. We will recover from this.
LB/DE Jarret Johnson and DE Cory Redding- Johnson, a defensive end and linebacker, had played with Baltimore since 2003. Redding had been here since 2010. Both these players left unexpectedly and without warning. And these losses hurt. Both of these players were critical assets to the ferocious Baltimore Ravens defense. And with guys like Paul Kruger, Courtney Upshaw, Sergio Kindle, and the two linebackers acquired in free agency also trying to replace Terrell Suggs, there is only so much of the void that can be filled. Still, next man up.
LB/DE Terrell Suggs-the linebacker partially tore is achilles tendon in a workout right after the draft. Although Suggs is expected to be back for at least some of the 2012 season, this loss hurts the most. Despite guys like Paul Kruger, Courtney Upshaw, Sergio Kindle, and the two linebacker acquasitions doing their part, no one can replace the 14 sacks and DPLOY award that Suggs put up in 2011.
SS/RET Tom Zbikowski and SS Haruki Nakumura-no one can blame them. The loss of depth behind Bernard Pollard and Ed Reed is something the Ravens would have liked to avoid. I was in favor of resigning Jim Leonhard to help out in this area.
CB/RET Chris Carr-Carr, who was usually a solid, consistent player, missed much of last season with injury. The Ravens released him and his large pay check. However, I don't expect this loss to hurt too much. We still have plenty of cornerback depth and more names than I know competing for spots as returners.

The Ravens will recover from these losses. They always do.
