This (2012) Off Season Has Been Pretty Bad For The Ravens

104 posts in this topic

I'm a little worried about the Ravens and the season that's coming up. I know its early and every team has issues, but it seems more than normal for the Ravens.
20 players no show for mini camp
Suggs out
Ed Reed not sure if he is going to play
Ngata a little out of shape
McKinnie way out of shape
Ray Rice contract issues
Joe Flacco contract issues
and much more

Well this off-season is an off-season where huge modifications are being made, and we have a lot of balls in the air at once. Sure the stuff with Suggs is unfortunate, but I'm not too worried about it. I'm sure we'll find our legs eventually.

I actually cant wait to see the final product of this off season. I have a giddy feeling about this unit when it hits the field. Especially the defense.

I'm a little worried about the Ravens and the season that's coming up. I know its early and every team has issues, but it seems more than normal for the Ravens.
20 players no show for mini camp This was strictly voluntary camp. Reed and Rice were the only ones who didn't make mandatory camp.
Suggs out Yes bad, but it allows someone else to show us what they got.
Ed Reed not sure if he is going to play. That day is coming regardless same with Lewis.
Ngata a little out of shape....Ngata stated he was under weight last season. He said he's at his ideal weight this season
McKinnie way out of shape....Not really, just need to lose lose than 10 lbs. If you read the real reason why he missed mandatory
camp, I'm kind of excited about having him at LT.
Ray Rice contract issues....I'll give you this one.
Joe Flacco contract issues....No issue. Joe isn't due until next year. As you see, he's been there for everything. The only time
he missed was b/c of the birth of his son.
and much more

That many players missing mini-camp on a veteran team isn't a big deal.

Ed has run his mouth this off-season, but he's going to play.

Way to exaggerate. Haloti intentionally bulked up.
Now that he’s regained his health after getting down to 335 pounds last season, Ngata has commenced bulking up.

The Utah native says he’s up to 345 pounds, and he appeared even heavier than that during the Ravens’ mandatory minicamp. Ngata’s weight is deceptive because of his athleticism and big frame at 6-foot-4, but he definitely looked heavier than any point since his rookie season.
Ngata hopes to play at 340 to 345 pounds this season and maintain his trademark quickness.

Two years ago, he weighed 350 pounds when he made the Pro Bowl for the first time. During the NFL lockout, Ngata lost 20 pounds in an effort to upgrade his stamina.

McKinnie has time to get in shape.

Teams around the league are dealing with contract disputes involving key players.

Can you name all the other significant issues this team has?
Remember when the Giants had a crazy offseason last year with OSI's status up in the air and what seemed like every player on their team tearing their ACL? I don't know exactly how many players went down, but typing "2011 giant acl tears" into google pulls up one article from September 2011 that says their 3rd player has gone down. Point is... offseason doesn't have everything to do with regular season.
I am a member of The Flock who is not that worried. My biggest concern as we have training camp is the possibility of another injury or major player going down.

20 out for minicamp? I thought that was OTAs.

I heard Haloti was in great shape.

And Flacco has no contract issues, he and the team have reiterated that.

More pessimism. I'd say the only thing slightly concerning is the loss of Suggs. I guess you could also thrown in the uncertainty of the OL as well.

Last year was the end of the world in Ravens land...turned out pretty good

People overreact when they have a lot of time to over think things....its okay, the only thing that concerns me if the schedule, not the team

I believe in the team, the offense will be much improved because of experience ALONE....trust me

I am going to get really tired of this "Suggs is out and Ray and Ed are old - therefore the Ravens defense sucks" thing when prediction season comes in late July/August.

Get used to it... We make the playoffs every year but yet every year they can only make excuses for why we wont be there

Why am I so strongly reminded of the summer of 2009? "We lost our great defensive coordinator, we lost Bart Scott, we lost Jim Leonhard," on and on and on. How about "We have 2 capable starting wide receivers for the second time in franchise history"? How about "we have 2 starting tight ends"? How about "we finally have an ILB that can play next to Ray"? How about "we have depth at the OLB/DE position"? How about "Our secondary has the potential to be the best in franchise history?" I don't get how the offseason could be bad - we signed our most important free agent of the offseason early on, and we tagged the second most important free agent and hopefully can work out a deal with him. Our biggest free agent loss was a GUARD, easily the most replaceable position on the line. Sizzle is NOT out for the year, he will be back at some point. Seriously, some fans need to get on a time machine and relive '96-'98, or that miserable up and down period from '01-'07.

Of that list only one is a factor for me and that is Suggs. A minor factor at that. It sounds to me like Upshaw is going to fill in just fine.
I am not the least bit worried about Reed, Rice, Nagata, Cam, Flacco, or even Poe. We have a great team with lots of talented professionals. This off season was a good one. No complaints, no worries.

Mmmm, we'll see I suppose. The entire starting roster could go down with something and I'd still believe we'd have the stuff to make a run at the playoffs, but I'm quite aware that I'm wearing purple glasses when saying that. We're gonna be fine, regardless. I expect Suggs to be back when it counts, Rice will see the light and stop being an idiot about his contract, Reed will do his usual song and dance (he's been a little more exaggerated this year, I admit) and we're gonna kick some butt during the season.

There have been some losses but it is nothing we can't overcome. There are also several reasons why we will be better.

The young'ns: Last year we began a youth movement. Torrey, Dickson/Pitta, Cody, C. Williams all started for the first time. While Kruger, Mcphee, Jimmy Smith, Gorrer all contributed for the first time. These guys are all young, growing and I don't see any of them getting any worse this next season. Who knows who else (Kindle, Doss) joins the party.

Cam will wear only one hat: Last year we got rid of Zorn and Cam Cameron took over the role of QB coach. Now nobody really knows for sure how good Cam and Joe's relationship is, but I believe Cam focusing solely on his role as OC and Caldwell focusing on his job of coaching Joe will result in at least one of those 2 areas being better.

Possibly the best receiving corps we've ever had: Torrey Smith broke nearly all the franchise rookie receiving records last year. He did this playing thru injury without an offseason and mainly just relied on his ability to outrun anybody. This year he is healed up, working on his hands and his route running, and he has Jacoby Jones on the other side to help free him up. If Jones can replicate his performance from Houston then that is much better than anything we've had from our #3 since Joe has been here. Hopefully someone realizes that Dennis Pitta should be utilized more.

Last but not least: SPECIAL TEAMS! Last year we watched this area regress in nearly all facets. The coverage wasn't very good, Cundiff was very inconsistent from 40+, we didn't have a good kr, and our best pr was also our best corner. This season we brought in Corey Graham a pro bowl st ace, Considine, and a legit returner in Jones. Rookie kicker Justin Tucker will hopefully stay on the team and push Cundiff.

Just need the offense to get their stuff together and everything will work itself out. The defense will be relatively fine. As usual over the last decade, the offense will determine our spot as a Superbowl contender. This off-season has been pretty lame, but gotta take it in stride.

If you go back and look at a few of those SB wins, Brady wouldn't have half of those rings if not for his defense.
