Next Years Contract

23 posts in this topic

After reading an article from the ravens webpage... I was thinking that next year we may have to play without either Flacco or Rice. That's if we can't get Rice done before the franchise tag is applied. If we have to franchise Rice this year and can't get a contract next year for him and/or Flacco only one of them can be franchised... Flacco will cost more but Rice means alot to this offense... so my question is "what are your views/opinions or if we have to choose". This year based on just performance will mean a lot for both of them and their back ups.

Flacco. No doubt about it. If rice and Joe arent signed longterm rice is testing the market. You don't let a franchise QB hit yhe Market unless you find yourself in a situation the colts did.

Stupid question, its a no brainer, but there is three people I know will say rice.

For what its worth I think one will be done longterm so we won't have to choose. I'd ideally like both to be done, or see enough from the.back up running backs that rice can be let go and ed reed tagged for a year or two till he retires.

The answer is clearly Flacco. Franchise QBs are just too hard to find, and Joe is a huge part of the offense despite what some would have you believe. It's much easier to find a RB to plug in than another QB. I love Rice and want him to be a Raven, but he is more replacable.

If we can't get a deal done with Ray Rice or Flacco this year, we'll tag Flacco next year in the hopes of signing long term and bite the bullet and sign Rice closer to his demands. There's no way the front office will let Flacco go and there is almost no chance Rice going anywhere.

But if I had to choose, its Flacco. An above average to good QB is more valuable than a great to elite RB. Ryan Fitzpatrick will make more money than Chris Johnson in 2012, just to put things in perspective.

Id like to see both signed but Id have to say Rice is a priority. But as you say its hard to find a QB.If we dont sign both soon I think We run the risk of one leaving.

While I don't think Ray Rice is easily replaced, QBs as good as flacco are hard to find. Ask Miami.

I doubt you could find a replacement as good as Joe.But Why doesnt the FO pay him?
because you don't want to over pay, at least until you have too. We have Joe for two years, assuming he'd be tagged. So you try and get him for as cheap as possible initially

This has been discussed multiple times in both Ray Rice threads.

I understand its always brought up but I was hoping we could have 1 topic and stick with it without a bunch of negative hating on someone just to make a point. But that may be wishful thinking.

I'll just second (or third, or fourth :268213: ) everyone else's statements, and agree.... you want Rice, but you must keep Flacco. No choice, if you have to choose between the two. Rice is very valuable, but Flacco is indispensible.

If Flacco doesn't get an extension this year, what would really be interesting to watch is what would happen with contract negotiations for him and others that will be coming up, if Flacco gets to the Superbowl (and wins of course)... $$$ cha ching! :258801:

We've seen what happens when you have a top 3 running back, top 3 defense, and no quarterback from 2001-2006. Runningbacks also have much less of an impact than they did a decade ago - just look at the numbers Adrian Peterson (without Favre) and MJD have put up the last 5 years - and yet, their teams have no success.

Ray RIce and Joe Flacco aren't going anywhere...and if one of them was to be left out of the equation if would be Rice because you can replace a RB much easier than a franchise QB.

...but both guys will be Ravens

I'm not so sure that happens. We'll see. I am a little worried that we can't keep Rice and Flacco. If we do who else do we let go? Next year Reed is a free agent same as Kruger and our 2011 draftees are RFAs like Pitta, Dickson, etc. McKinnie comes off the books next year as well, but he is all we have at LT at this point. Furthermore, our biggest FA Joe Flacco will be out there, too--unless we get a deal done now.

I don't think its even an option to lose either of them...Ray Lewis wont be around much longer, Ed Reed is coming to the end and as much as he wants big money he wont get it from the Ravens, that doesnt mean he wont sign an extension but its not gonna be for big money...those deals are gone for him, his best is behind him. Other contracts are coming off the book all the time so the money will be there, and the salary cap will go up...its a process, and there is a balance between resigning offense and defensive guys

Ray and Joe are the nucleus for the young Ravens offense...Ozzie and the FO are smart enough to know that

have some faith

Oh, I have faith. The Ravens can certainly keep them both but my concern is who is gone to keep them? I know Reed & Lewis are near the end but I want them here as long as they want to be here. Yanda's deal increased after the restructure. We may or may not keep McKinnie. We have to retain Flacco. We may want to have Kruger back. We will have to tender a lot of the 2010 draft class (not 2011 like I originally said, lol).

I just know it will be hard to keep them all. If not impossible.

Ray is done after this year, his play is dropping off...same thing with Ed Reed even though he wants to continue to play. Ozzie's philosophy is to spend money on ascending players. I think we can both agree Ray and Ed are no longer gettinb any better. McKinnie is in his last year with the Ravens so he will be gone.

The deals will get done, Birk is probably another that will be gone so money will get freed up to keep other guys and as always every year we lose some guys and we gains some back.

If it is literally one or the other, then keep Flacco, no question. Rice is great, but a team can play without a great or even decent RB. They cannot play without a decent QB. Look at Indy last season. I still have faith that both will get deals, if they want them.
