Fascinating Thing About Steelers Fans...

10 posts in this topic

the other day i was talking to a guy that's a steelers fan, and he brought up something of interest to me.

i'm sure a lot of you recall the nfl.com bracketology poll the other month which let the fans choose who they think is the greatest nfl team of the superbowl era. the winner was the 1976 raiders, narrowly edging out the 2000 ravens by a margin of 50.4% to the ravens' 49.6%. he went on a tirade explaining how the poll was rigged etc, neither of those teams deserved to be in the conversation etc.

the thing that irritated me, however, was that he said the ravens' 2000 season was "ancient history" and that fans and the rest of the football-watching public need to "forget about it move on with their lives". i've seen similar remarks posted by steelers fans on sports forums on the topic of great teams (in particular great defences in nfl history), and apparently none of them see the irony in this. whenever you talk to a steelers fan, any steelers fan, young or old, anywhere in the world, you will hear these two words uttered over any others: "steel curtain". you know, the steelers of the 1970s.

so, evidently, a team with a great achievement in this millenium is "ancient history" and doesn't need to be acknowledged, but a team with a great achievement back in the 1970s is more recent than the 2000s, and needs to be acknowledged at every possible turn. we all understand that 2000 was over a decade ago and we're due for another championship, but the basis of their argument, if i can call it that, is more than a little flawed fundamentally.

has anybody else noticed this? is it selective memory? a double standard time warp?

They also believe the Steelers are the only team in the NFL, they make up every excuse possible when they lose, they also think the Refs are against them(ironic isn't it) and and they mostly only know the fact that they have won 6 Super Bowls and when they run out of excuses they revert back to the idiotic "6 Rings" statement.

I'm sure that kind of hypocrisy is there in all fanbases. Still, coming from a Steeler fan who's only recent history was getting swept by the Ravens and Tebowed by the Tebows, I wouldn't think they're the type to say "forget the past". Especially considering 4 of their 6 titles came decades ago when you could count out most of the league before the season started.

The Hammer hit the nail here.
Anyway, ignore them. They are jelous that there two greatest rivals are ahead of them in the poll.

Yeah but like always they probably made excuses for why they got swept by us and got Tebowed. So that's the only thing that matters to me and besides I never understood why they bring up the past so much, it's not about the past, it's about now and the current season.

Week 1: "We didn't come to play"
Week 9: "Torrey Smith pushed off/refs somehow"
Wildcard: "Ben hobbled/defensive injuries"
"Besides, we have 6 rings. How many do you have?"
