Pernell McPhee "Secret Superstar"

34 posts in this topic

This is a nice little article by PFF on McPhee. I think we are all very excited to see what Pernell can do next year. This goes to show we arent just looking at him through our Purple Goggles as he rated very highly as a pass-rushing interior lineman last season. Let's hope he can maintain his production with an increased work load.

Yes, sir. McPhee finished with PFF's 6th highest grade among all DTs. His 32 combined pressures, QB hits and sacks ranked 8th among the same group. What's even more impressive is that he played a total of just 348 snaps at DT. The average number of snaps among the 7 players ahead of him in this category is 771, roughly 45% more than Pernell's. I simply can't wait to see what he does this season with more playing time.

I'm excited to see what our new coordinator does with him. I invision him being used the way he used Seymour when he was in NE (if he had him back then)

The guy was something special last season, there is no doubt about that. I am looking forward to even better things in his sophmore season.

Cody Ngata McPhee and Jones. I think we need one more guy in rotation.
Yeah, we brought in a lot of bodies to compete for probably 2 more rotational spots. Hopefully a couple of them really impress.

I think Cody's play is tremendously important this season.

I remember seeing McPhee double teamed in a few replays in games late in the season. I think a lot of teams are taking notice, but with him and Ngata on the same line, it's going to be really tough to keep BOTH of them in check. McPhee is a beast.

I agree, he has to improve. I think the off-season conditioning he has been doing will really help though. I have high hopes for him this year.

I think Suggs' injury might be a blessing in disguise because we finally let loose our young players and they will have no excuse about playing time. Kruger, McPhee, Upshaw, and others will have all the opportunity to make something big. Also, the teams we're playing, most of them are pass-oriented, which means we're going to have a lot of opportunities to get sacks.

i really think we could have the best pass rush in the league. kruger, mcphee, ngata, and upshaw up front with our young and talented secondary. i think this is going to be a real fun season.

I like having him on the team though, I have faith in him. Seems like his head is in the right place. And he's got a lot of power at the point. Should become a JJ type presence on the team. Just well liked blue collar guy.

I won't be surprised if McPhee is a household name after the team's three early-season prime time games.

He will make the steelers McPee for sure....
Come on man, our DC is named Pees. If your going that route do something with him.

I'm hoping McPhee can continue to develop, he was easily the surprise of the rookies last year. If he improves enough, he could be the answer while Suggs is out.

McPhee's production last season was limited pretty much only by his presence on the field. Through pretty limited playing time he managed to constantly find his way into the backfield. I'd like to see him get more play this year, though it might be that the coaches weren't impressed with his play against the run and that was what kept him on the sideline. He certainly needs to be on the field in any and all passing downs to get into the QB's face.

Suggs going down is bad for the team, but it might prove to be a help for Pernell McPhee. He could have a real breakout year without Suggs to overshadow him as a pass rusher.
McPhee was a run stopper in college and many only viewed him as a first and second down lineman coming out out of college because analysts didn't think he could rush the passer. McPhee can stop the run. He just never got to show that skill last season.

I think the difference is he mostly played DE in college while in the NFL has played some DE, but mostly DT. His quickness has allowed him to become a very effective interior pass-rusher, but he may not hold up as well against the run if asked to play DT on more running downs.

He's prime for a breakout season but I don't see him starting only to keep him fresh. The only reason I don't think he starts is to keep up the rotation we like to use in defense and it makes more sense to keep Jones in on running downs though I think McPhee can play the run. He was the player I picked to show out this year and still think so.

A low snap count and relative obscurity played a big part in his success last season, but that success doesn't come without raw ability too, he was regularly beating guys at the end of the season who were noticeably keying in on him. He torched Andrew Whitworth twice in a row in week 11, that never happens.

His name is already showing up on mock 1st round re-drafts.

McPhee is just another example of credit needing to be given to our scouting department. Prototypical Raven defensive player right here, he has all the tools to be a pro bowler. B.A hit the nail on the head, Pernell started to produce right from the 1st pre season game. Im excited to see what an off season of training, lifting and going through OTAs can do for this kid.

That was at 4-3 DE. We're talking the 5 technique here. It's a different animal.

That right there is the problem with PFF and their "data". No two defensive players are exactly the same, and responsibilites can vary greatly. A lot of young pass rushers around the league benefit from simplified defensive assignments and limited playing time.

By PFFs own admission they don't have access to coaches film or playbooks, and none of their bloggers have ever worked for an NFL FO. Take their evaluations with a heaping pile of salt.

he's a big part of the reason I dont think the defense will hurt for sacks and guys like McPhee, Kruger, and Upshaw will fill the void left by Suggs and once he returns our defense will be so much stronger and a healthy Ngata can make big plays..you could tell something was wrong with Ngata for half the season it seemed like
