Owners Voting On Allowing 1 Player To Come Off Of Ir Per Year

26 posts in this topic

.... tomorrow (or, for most of you in the EST zone, today), the NFL owners are voting on allowing having 1 player come off of the IR per year.

Potentially huge news for the Ravens with respect to Sizzle.

I'd like to see this passed. Not just for the positive effect it would have on our season, but also because it just makes sense.

This would also give the Ravens a huge opportunity... if they could IR Suggs until Week 9, that would open up several million in cap space. Combine that with the $1,5000,000 that they're currently under, and they would suddenly have enough cap to extend any of Flacco, Rice or Reed.

You still pay players on ir. No saving. The only benefit of this over pup is that pup they have to be activated after week 6, ir suggs could be on it til the playoffs.
even if they did get savings, what would happen after week 9 when suggs comes back? You clearly didn't think this through

How would you feel if you played your heart out the year before and became the DPOY and then you get unlucky and the team just takes away over half of your paycheck? Would you really want to get back on to the field and help them out? I know that I wouldn't.

you half-way right arnie, week 9 the team has settled so you could drop one-two players that are not performing for the money you pay them (cut or IR) and replace them with practice squad players... or you can navigate a couple of salaries you didn't have time to do being busy signing joe, rice or cary... it certainly opens a few possibilities, the best as you mentioned it being able to bring suggs back when at full throttle

he wasn't saying that suggs gets a pay cut, just that the salary won't count towards the cap until he gets activated to the roster

That would have to be some pretty big pay checks you would have to cut, and then you hope that the money they have left on their contract is not guarenteed. Half of Suggs contract is still pretty big, so lets just pay him for the full season and not get som money that will benifit of now, but possibly hurt us in the long haul

So you just push the pain into the future? If we have to pay him anyway, why not just do it now? Let's not do like the steelers with all their restructuring of contracts and stuff, pay our people now and keep the future bright.
read my post above, if your on IR you stll count ot the cap. there is zero monetary savings from IR, it just opens up a roster spot

you won't change his salary at all, not a dime... he gets his money... the league does not count the money a player makes while being on IR against the team cap... we could be paying suggs 100 billion, the league will be fine with that and our cap too... but if we then want to make him active, let's say before we play pitts, then his salary will count towards the cap again

Incorrect. Players on the IR do count against the salary cap.

Not even in regard to Suggs, this could potentially be useful in the future for our team as we seem to always stash some young guy on IR instead of the practice squad with some injury that seemingly comes out of nowhere due to fear of someone claiming him (Ramon Harewood, Michael McAdoo). Perhaps in the future if we have done something like that and have a more significant injury, we can pull a guy in those circumstance back up to the active roster.

I don't want the team to waste that Special IR on Suggs because PUP will do just fine. Suggs can be on PUP for 6 weeks and has to be on the roster by the 8th week. That Special IR should be saved when one of our other marques players needs it.

Imagine last year if Texans could've brought back Mario Williams.

i wonder can this be abused or can you only use it once? i mean it says one player, but can the player go on ir then off, then on then off, like say he was on, then took off in week 6 could he go back on week 11, then activated for the play offs again? like a kicker for example, if cundiff got a wee knock and was missing a few weeks midseason, could we activated tucker, then put him back on IR, then cundiff comes back and sucks, can we activate tucker again?

This would probably be most useful for guys injured in say, week 1, who could potentially come back for the playoffs. If they think Suggs is going to be return this season, he'll go on the PUP. It wouldn't be worth it to save a roster spot for only a few weeks by putting him on IR and then using your one return-from-IR. You don't know when you'll need to bring someone else back.

I might be wrong but from what I read about this today, it only counts for players injured during the season who go on IR. So if you are injured week one, you can get off it. Suggs can already go the PUP list.

And it's been approved.

Well that wasn't the only thing approved, The Trade Deadline has been moved to Week 8.
