Decosta "promoted"

27 posts in this topic

Eric Decosta has got himself a new title, assisstant GM. While its a promotion on paper, im pretty sure he was already filling this role anyway, but since he got a recent extension and pay rise, which Biscotti said should "keep him off the market" for a while a title change was on the cards.

I just hope hes around long enough to take over from Ozzie when he retires.

Congratulations to Eric. Hard work pays off. We are sure that you will be ready when Ozzie finally retires.

That was pretty much his title in the first place, but glad it's official now. Congrats Eric. We're in good hands when Ozzie decides it's time to go.

We already knew they planned on him taking over when they upped his pay a few years back, but this just confirms that whenever Ozzie DOES decide to step down we have a tremendous successor in place. Above all, I think the continuity of our front office is what has made our team so competitive over the last decade.

Yeah, it's already been said many times that he's the heir-apparent to Ozzie and that he has turned down GM positions because of his being guaranteed that he's the GM once Ozzie decides that he's done.

Assistant GM sounds a lot better than Director of Player Personnel, though.

We are so lucky to already have a GM in place for when one of the greatest ever decides to call it quits.
It would be like Ray already grooming his replacement that we know will be special... Maybe he already is? (Mcclain)?

Still very curious to see how much Ozzie actually does and how much of it is Decosta.

I'm not sure how that can even be quantified. We know both are heavily involved in this organization's success. That's good enough for me.

It's not like Decosta is going anywhere. Despite his hesitance to get involved in coaching decisions in order to save the franchise, i.e. firing Cam, Bisciotti does understand that intelligence in the FO is paramount to creating a winning program. He'll pay Decosta GM money, which isn't that much more than he's making as it is, to keep him around.

From the look of it and what i've read on here before, it seems like DeCosta tells ozzie who is there and who we should take and that Ozzie is final say.

Unless he's personally working the phones in the war room and can't take a moment to look up and see who's been taken, I doubt Ozzie (or anyone in that room) would need to be told who's available. And considering Ozzie scouts college players, attends the Senior Bowl and the Combine and is involved in creating the organization's big board, I can't imagine him not having an idea of who BPA is either.

The more I've learned about the front office, the more I've seen that DeCosta's contributions are underrated. But I haven't seen anything to suggest Ozzie doesn't have a clue what's going on.

Either way, I am more ambitious to live in Ozzie's shadows for a chance that may not come in the near future. I would probably go to another team honestly but glad he is staying from a fans point of view.

DeCosta's one of my favorite guys in the Castle. He's pretty fan-friendly and he seems to be in-touch with very good players. He has a good sense about him. I feel comfortable knowing that he will replace Newsome, who will be a Hall of Fame GM.

It's hard to replace future Hall of Famers, but I believe we have with Eric.

Funny, I remember people saying much the same thing about Phil Savage when he left and similar concerns when Kokinis left.

Neither proved to be anything without Ozzie. DeCosta will hopefully break that trend - and I think he will - but one thing we do know for sure is that Ozzie IS a great GM.

Not a knock on either one, just curious what they actually do. Especially now that they are basically Co-Gms with the new promotion.

LOL....."save the franchise", come on, could you be more melodramatic?

That's not said in any way, shape or form to defend Cameron, but that statement is just way over the top.

Sorry, but being named Asst GM is no where near the same as being co-GMs.

Yeah ok....

Not saying they have the same power but the promotion is basically saying that DeCosta has been actually doing some roles of a GM for a while now and he will finally be recognized for it with Ozzie.

Like I said, Glad he is around, but I'm too ambitious to live in someone's shadow when a lot of teams out there would love to make him their guy.

The reason he's staying is because he already knows how the system works here, and there's already a great framework in place. It's much more difficult going into a tricky situation and making a name for yourself. In most cases, GM openings are available for teams that need a rebuild. There's no sense in him sacrificing his future on a team that he knows nothing about when he could stay where he's comfortable and guaranteed the position in the future.
