What's With The Change In Opinion On Jah Reid?

49 posts in this topic

Personally I always thought he could probably play LT. For those who think he doesn't have the feet, do you think McKinnie still has the feet? Arm length and height can make up for a lot of the deficiencies in footwork. Reid at 6-7 has 34 inch arms and Kelechi Osmele at 6-6 has almost 36 inch arms. They both have the better measurables to play LT than Oher, who has 33 inch arms at 6-5. Of course its not all about measureables, but Reid has the measureables to play LT. I have no idea if Reid knows how to use his hands or use proper angles.

BTW, Ben Muth, the OL analyst at FootballOutsiders thought Jah Reid should be playing LT over McKinnie.

"When Oher was out for a couple plays he was replaced by Jah Reid. We're dealing with an even smaller sample size here, but I thought Reid looked pretty good. He had a poor set on the first pass he was in: it was tentative and looked like he was trying to just avoid disaster. But after that he had a nice cut block on WIlfork, and a really good looking pass set where he used his hands better than Oher or McKinnie did all game. Again, it’s a limited sample size, but I’d be surprised if he couldn't beat out McKinnie next season. He probably could’ve done it this year if there had been a real offseason."

Age wouldn't cause a regression in footwork. Footwork is technique, something that *should* improve throughtout a career. McKinnie never had feet from what I understand.

But yes, I agree with the rest. I'm tentative on Jah Reid at LT, but I fully support putting him there in the preseason.

Wow there's alot of love in this room...

It's hard to say where Reid is in his development. He has the size and athleticism to play LT. His initial m.o. was that he could play on the right side until he developed (IF). It's obvious that we aren't dying to get him on the field and he certaintly didn't dominate as the extra lineman/TE last year. Still it's not like we can take a draft profile and expect that to be the facts later on down the road. He's a servicable back-up until he gets a shot to be a succesful starter when a tackle position opens up. He has camp to prove he's a stud, but I don't see it. I never count anyone we draft out as far as developing into a starter. Our personnel department is just too good.

Thoughts on other O-line...
McKinnie is all but done and if he has anything left in the tank I doubt we resign him after this year. He's been a pretty good low-risk investment.

Oher gets a bad rap. He had a decent year last year. I watched every game last year and he didn't stonewall everyone but I didn't see him playing the turnstyle position. If it was as bad as I read in here the team would have identified it and acted accordingly. You can't believe GM's when they say nice things about a player but if he was stinking it up they wouldn't have hesitated to talk about upgrading at tackle. I always thought he'd be better at guard but...

Yanda. Steady like a Honda.

Birk. Old, smart and effective but he did show some age last year. I think this is his last year and the two-year deal is bonus related.

Osemele, and Gino. It's hard to say since every player mentioned in the minicamp article was described like a future all star, but Osemele did recieve extra praise. I find it hard to say a guy really showed his physicality in shorts and non-contact drills, but it's been said a few places.

Jah Reid is huge, but whenever he got on the field he looked kinda skinny, idk it was odd, but hey , he played every postion last year in practice, I hope they give him a hard look at LT, McKinnie sure isnt helping very much.

Someone the other day posted that I think McKinnie gave up 1 more sack than Oher did at LT, and they were the same in pressures/hurries.

It didnt seek like they were equal at LT but I was shocked to see the stats.

I think Jah Reid should get a chance to compete for the LT spot if the coaches feel like he has potential. I only say that because there is nothing wrong with competition and for all we know Reid could be a beast of a LT. Then again, he could fall right on his face and be terrible. I think he should definitely be given a shot to at least show us if he can do it. You will never know if a guy can do it unless he is given the chance. I don't personally want Oher back there, but if he's our best option then he goes back to the left. Hence, this is why I would like to see if Reid could do it. If Reid can't, we still have McKinnie for this year and next year we can get a LT. If he can, then problem solved.

I think he's going to play guard but which side I don't have a clue. I think he should be groomed to replace Oher because if he continues to stink with penalties and mental errors he won't be kept after his contract is up. It'd be nice to have a replacement ready.

I think that Osemele will be the guard and Reid will be a backup to Oher and McKinnie again.

RT would be best for Reid as Oher might be gone when his contract is up. If we move Oher to LG this year then Reid can start at RT, with KO learning and backing up Oher at LG if needed

amen, let's all pray you're right. oher is a liability of legendary proportions and needs to take his false start penalties anywhere but baltimore

fair enough. but until he demonstrates some consistent play, improves on his basic football fundamentals, and lives up the first round status (and price tag) at which he was drafted at, i think ozzie needs move on with another player after this season if there isn't a significant improvement. he has a long way to go...

He costs less than 3M per year. Thats pretty good for a starting OT. He isnt great, and he I agree that he hasnt always played to his 1st round draft status but he is a team-first player that has been a solid contributor for 3 years. He does need to improve, especially in pass-protection, but he also has had stretches where he has played very well. Big Mike just needs to be able to play consistently at a high level. Hopefully, not having to change positions this season will have a positive impact on his play.

i just find myself doing :34853_doh: on game day as a result of oher's play, much more so than anybody else. don't get me wrong i like the guy as a person, i think he's a good man. and you're right; this year will be the year to see if he can show improvement because he won't have to switch positions during the pre-season; he's had a full season of playing right tackle plus an off-season, training camp/ota's by the time this season rolls around. we will see what he can do..
