Love all the Ray quotes. IMO, he makes a strong case for #1 but, then again, those other athletes were before my time.

Unitas, brooks and since Cal was 6 I have no idea who 3 and 4 are
[/quote]

I'm thinking it might be the Babe along with Unitas & Brooks

IMO he should be #1.

I feel Len Bias should be ranked higher.

What a bias statement...

A huge part of me feels like MIchael Phelps should be number one. He's the greatest Olympian of all time. Guys like Frank Robinson and Johnny Unitas were HUGE for the city of Baltimore and the state of Maryland, but Phelps has had a global reach and influence.

Phelps is known around the globe for his accomplishments and he's revitalized the swimming program in our country. I don't know, I feel like he'll be more highly regarded in 20 years once his influence can be looked back upon in hindsight.

I am assuming my childhood hero, Brooks Robinson will be second right behind Johnny U, but I can't think of anyone that should be above Ray at #3.

Cal should be #1 IMO. He is born and raised in MD, played an entire Hall of Fame career in Baltimore and really helped revitalize the sport of baseball. His consecutive games streak is one of the few accomplishments that will no one will ever come close to matching.

And he's still here helping in Maryland

What's the criteria? Just what they have done for Maryland or what they have accomplished for themselves?

My friends, this thread has been taken out of context. If I had meant it to be about the 175, I would have put it in the off-topic forum. It was meant to be about Ray and his reflections on his selection, his career, the team and the city. Please read the article I have linked if you haven't already. Thanks!

You are absolutely right and glad you pointed that out. Being away for a year in Iraq, I had forgotten how critical it is to choose your words wisely on this site. Thanks!

Agreed. Unitas is the Best QB of all time that changed the game, retired and lived in Cockeysville and was a Baltimore kinda guy.

Let's just put it this way, I would of probably went

1 unitas
2 cal
3 ray
4 brooks
5 phelps

Babe Ruth didn't do anything for city of bmore.

I agree. To me it should be Unitas, Ripken, and Ray as one, two, three in some order. I would probably go Ripken first because he is homegrown, but any of them deserve it IMO.

knowing ray and the baltimore sun I think there was some cut off that well done comment . but hey the man has had a storic career he believe me when I say this men like Suggs , Ngata and Lewis are a rare breed in this sport . Fans before Cash . Baltimore we are Truly Blessed to have men on a Team who understand without the community and fans there is no Team , that the fans aren't just ticket holders . so when you see these guys out and about give them respect make sure you tell them you appreciate them no matter what happens on the field .

I can only think of two ahead of him, only because of their legend : Babe Ruth and Frank Robinson. I would say it should be a dogfight between him and Unitas. Who the other person is I have no idea...
