Michael Oher... Still Progressing Or Regressing?

55 posts in this topic

Maybe im the only one, but i doubt it, but in the past ive noticed that he was always a liability on the Line, be it false starts, holding or just getting beat. I was curious to everyone elses observations on how well of a tackle you think he is, if hes gotten better or if its looking down hill. I would think his contract is up soon but im not sure, someone chime in, but im wondering if we resign him merely bc of the lack of talent on our front line. So what do you guys think?

apparently he did have a huge game last year http://www.csnbaltimore.com/blog/ravens-talk/post/Ravens-tackles-make-the-grade?blockID=707318&feedID=6703
last year wasn't really his best, so this year will be make or break for a new contract... i just hope, for all our sake, that he raises to the challenge and comes even better than he was in his rookie year

His inability to control those mental lapses isn't going to change anytime soon, but he's more than serviceable and we don't have anyone who can replace him. If we could find a starter at LT and RT he'd make a pro-bowl guard, but he has a clear cut ceiling at tackle.

We have the talent in place to replace him if he chooses to follow Grubbs by testing the FA market. I'm pretty sure that we'll need a LT and a RT by this time next year.

I, too, am thinking his contract will play a part in deciding whether the Ravens will keep him or not. I am not high on him anymore. I am betting that Oher will not have a strong year in 2012, thus forcing us to look for replacements with who we drafted.

He signed a 5 year contract with the Ravens in July 2009, so baring a trade we have him until the end of the 2013 season.

He certainly has good size and build for a guard. The question is would he rather hit the free agent market after the 2013 season as a guard or a tackle? It's all about the Benjamins.

Oher had a very good rookie season. For whatever reason, the past 2 years he has regressed especially in the pass-blocking and penalties. It may have something to do with the fact that he has changed position twice. This season will be the first time he will play at the same spot two years in a row so hopefully that will help him regain his 2009 form.

Did he hit it his rookie year when he was outstanding?

I don't really see all the negative stuff that most here are talking about. I feel Oher is continuing to get better since his rookie season. That being said it's hard to really compare because of the position change. I do feel he has played much better on the right side of the line and showed that he can be serviceable on the left as well and that can't be said about most tackles in todays game. The mental mistakes is a tough thing to get past but his physical play can't really be knocked at this point in his career.

Thats a good question, if I'm a GM who needs a new guard then I'm looking at Oher like he's Kate Upton coming out of a birthday cake. If Christ Chester (yuck) can get a 20 million contract just imagine what Oher could get in 2014.

With that said I always liked Oher, he's always had an unselfish team first mentality and could very well sign an extension for a hometown discount.

Who knows whats happening to Oher.

He looks like he was having a phenomenal season in rookie year. Then LT which projected to be a similar sucesss didnt pan out next year. .... Then we tried putting him on his old RT side and he couldnt do it anymore. He'll be projected to be on RT again. We'll see what happens...

Im going to hold off until this season is over. Last year he went through a 5/6 game stretch when he was amazing, not letting up a sack or many pressures. If any of you follow filmstudys oline analysis he graded out the best olineman for us in that period. Then the rest of teh games he was average or below ave.

Hes a bit like joe, inconsistent... hopefully he will get it right this year being at RT for the second season in a row

I still have faith that he can be a franchise RT. Like others have said, I dont think we could find anyone in free agency that would be better then him. I think/hope that he'll progress this year. Usually players do better in there contract year, plus he gets to stay at one side for 2 straight years. I wouldn't mind making him a guard though eventually if we could find two franchise tackles.

Just thinking about this makes me a little sad. We really need to fix our tackle situation. We still have unknowns for LG and C. Hopefully K.O. and Gino pan out. We need them too.

I agree we have decent players, but sometimes our line can get manhandled, like in the playoffs last season. Hopefully, some of these rookies can really step up. I still worry about our o-line this year.

Pro bowl guard, average tackle. He's ridiculously inconsistent. He's overrated as far as run blocking goes. I don't think he's that good. He's not as much of a mauler as people claim him to be. Bad footwork in the pass game and run game!

Some more coaching and determination and i think this Oher will be amazing. He wasn't horrible last year, he did fine for switching positions and not having a mini-camp.

He's as athletic as person can be at that size, and he performs with a mean streak when he's confident. We were almost in the Super Bowl with him on the line, and his performance isn't what hurt us in the long run. Grubbs and Birk were getting man-handled against the Patriots. Not Oher.

In hindsight he wasnt worth a 1st round pick.....at the time it was a great move though. I think he's a better run blocker then pass blocker. Our offense every year has gradually developed into more of a passing one. Which could also explain why he has gradually looked worse over the years.

Hahaha yeah okay. He was in his third year, at that point mini camps are not that important at all, especially for an experienced and established starter. Also, he was great at RT in his rookie year, while having never played there before. So he switches to LT, and all of a sudden sucks at RT? Did he just forget? No, that's a bullcrap excuse. He's played most of his career at RT. He has no excuses, period. It makes no sense for him to have never played RT before, play great there his first two years (mainly his first), and then regress in his third. And your excuse is because he changed positions? Even though he played great at both LT and RT his rookie year, switching between the two without a hitch. He has no excuses, stop making them.

lol, how can you say he would be a Pro-Bowl Guard when he has never played a snap at Guard in his entire career. No offense, but that is a pretty dumb statement. He is a very hard worker and ultimate team player. I think he will have a better season now that he some positional consistency. If he cant get any better, then we have Reid to take over for him.
