probably

I don't see why. We've discussed domestic leagues and the champions league here. No need to create another thread for a sport that not many folks talk about when there already is one.

Because lots of people who don't normally talk about soccer, care a great deal about the WC. Then there is the fact that It's probably the biggest sporting event in the world that happens only once every 4 years.

I still can't see more than maybe 8 people talking about it.

No one stands out as a clear cut winner for me. Argentina have an easy run to qtrs, but they always fail to deliver

There are a lot of good squads, but I don't think one team stands apart either. Spain, Germany, Brazil, and Argentina are probably my favorites to win it all.

Pulling for Brazil, but there are many candidates this year. The most obvious ones would be Spain and Germany imo. And Belgium is a darkhorse. This golden era of Belgium is quite spectacular.

If Suarez is fit Uruguay could be spectacular. Don't sleep on Chile either. I hhave a feeling an American team wins it.

Literally or figuratively?

Figuratively, I don't gamble with money.  Gotta fall back on my German heritage in these situations.  It's definitely nice that die Mannschaft is really good.  Plus there's a lot of Bayern guys.  I'm not a soccer superfan but any means, but as I've been trying to get more into the sport they're who I root for.  Of course it helps that I've had a lot of trouble picking an EPL team.

I'm with you on that last part. If I don't have a geographical reason to root for a team, I pick based on players I like. In the EPL players move so frequently it's hard for me to choose a team.

In general yes, but on this forum, like arnie said, I don't see many more people talking about it than the ones that have been on this thread. Regardless, whoever wants to start a World Cup thread is free to do so.

I see Brazil taking it.

I guess I was just thinking if there is a separate thread, it might encourage some of those folks who don't usually talk about soccer to join in the conversation. Personally, I'm rarely in this thread because I only casually follow professional soccer. I absolutely love the WC though. It's my favourite sporting event.

I think Brazil could flop. Always like to see England do well since they are closest to my home country but cant see it

With all the pressure that they have on them, that could happen.  I think they are too talented for that to happen though.

The one time every four years everyone researches their ancestry to jump on the bandwagon. :P

I actually have high hopes for the U.S. team. I think they can beat Ghana if they play like they did against Nigeria. That was one of the better matches I have seen from them in recent memory. The defense was solid and Jozy seems to have picked the perfect moment to regain his form. Michael Bradley is a world class player and some of the contributions from the likes of Fabian Johnson and Jermaine Jones have been excellent.

A win and a draw could be all they need to get through, and I think better results are possible.
