Roster Size / Cap Question.

7 posts in this topic

Okay, correct me if I am wrong but we have well over 53 players currently on our roster. right? All players are currently under some form of contract right?

We are barely spare change away from our cap. This I know.

So when the season gets started and we have to cut our roster down to 53 players does that make all sorts of cap space suddenly avalible?

Does the cap apply in the off season or only once the season starts?

Thank you for being smarter than me.

Something like the top 51 players count towards the cap or something along those lines, I believe.

Yep. That's how it works. To allow teams to sign camp bodies and stuff, the NFL only counts the top 51 players' salaries against the cap. So that means that if you have a lot of guys who earn the minimum of like 389K (lots of UDFAs fall here) then those guys typically don't count against your cap during the offseason.

Of course, once the season begins and teams need to trim their roster down to 53, all of those players count against the cap.

I'm assuming this is how we are able to sign guys to $3,500,000 or $1,500,000 contracts when we're only $1,500,000 under the cap? They just take the highest 51 regardless of position?

I know the NFL will never have guaranteed contracts, but man is the NHL cap ever easier to follow..

“@RavensInsider: Marshal Yanda's base salaries: 2012 ($700,000), 2013 ($4.5 million), 2014 ($5.5 million) and 2015 ($5.5 million).”

“@RavensInsider: Marshal Yanda's salary cap figures: 2012 ($3.65 million), 2013 ($7.45 million), 2014 ($8.45 million) and 2015 ($8.45 million).”

“@RavensInsider: Ravens' cap figure was $3.529 million after Yanda restructure, $1.214 million deal for  McBean and doesn't include deals for Jones, Pollard”

That's how we got some cap.
