Ryan McBean

The [s]#[/s]Ravens have signed nose tackle Ryan McBean, who spent the last 3 years with Denver.

http://blogs.baltimoreravens.com/2012/05/07/ravens-sign-nt-mcbean/

"Broncos rescinded restricted free agent DE Ryan McBean's original-round tender.
The move makes McBean a free agent. A fourth-round pick of the Steelers in 2007, McBean tallied his first four career sacks last season, but is facing a six-game suspension for violating the league's policy on PEDs. He has appealed the decision. McBean was also arrested on stalking charges last October. His off-the-field issues and limited history of production will make McBean radioactive on the open market."

He's facing a six game suspension... I doubt he makes the final roster if the suspension stays.

Not a NT, he is basically a less explosive McPhee who isn't great in run defense. Helpful as a rotational guy though

I am all for camp bodies. We can have up to 90 so why not get all the camp bodies we can get? It will give competition for Cody and the others. Competition is always good.

Apparently his positive "performance enhancement" test is being appealled. He might get a Ryan Braun, who knows. He seems like a decent big body and we do need depth so let him battle it out with the UD rookies and such.

Low Risk, But some solid reward

He did have 4 sacks last year. Our D-line needs some depth because we have Ngata, Cody, McPhee, Jones, and Tyson as our solid contributors. Then we have a bunch of undrafted rookies and low risk signings.

This is one of the guys I know absolutely nothing about. Is there any chance he makes the team? His suspension was reduced to 3 games.

I believe he makes the team because he won't count against our roster until game 4, which means we can have more bodies without a penalty. It's a win-win. We have nothing to lose keeping him because we don't pay him until his suspension is over and we could cut him if necessary anyway.

We are in desperate need of d linemen. We have no depth after McKinney and Redding left. Either McBean or Maake will make the final roster, maybe both.

True, but we have nothing to gain by keeping him, either - if he can't play, but is holding a roster spot, how is that a positive? He can't practice or have contact with the team during the suspension period.

Injuries can occur early in the year, too. We have a lot to gain by having a free extra body for depth on the roster by week 4. Not to be negative, but what if something happens to Cody in week 3 or even Arthur Jones? He would be at least some depth for us. He could be cut by the 4th game, too. He can have contact with us before the suspension. It's similar to David Reed. We technically had 54 men on the roster last year because Reed was suspended and then we IRed McAdoo when the suspension was over.

Yes, but my point is, he's taking up a roster spot, without him being able to play. There are many "borderline" quality players out there, eager and willing to work hard to make an NFL roster, who can contribute. I understand that he will be available after week 3, and if Cody or another DLineman goes down, he'd be a good plug-and-play option. To me, however, I would only retain him on the 53 man roster, and be willing to tolerate losing him for the first 3 games, if he shows himself to be exceptional in the preseason. Denver had him last year; they know the player he is, and were willing to offer him a RFA contract, until he got suspended. They obviously felt his talent level didn't warrant keeping him on the roster for 3 weeks... Time will tell if it's a worthy gamble, but - like I said - if I was the head coach, he'd really have to show me something in camp, for me to save him a roster spot that could go to someone who COULD play weeks 1-3.

I think you are confused about what it means to be suspended and how that affects the player and the club because what you are saying is not true. Don't take this as condescending because I know it can sound that way, but a player suspended or on PUP does not take up a roster spot. You misunderstand how that part works. This is how we were able to carry 54 players last year during David Reed's one game suspension for marijuana. At that time we had McAdoo on our roster and we placed him on IR when we had to decide between him and Reed.

Here are my references to show you what I mean:
http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/7396/michael-mcadoo - the 54th man on the roster last year who went on IR after Reed was eligible (the first game, which was played on September 11th).

From what I've gathered this guy is a one gap inside pass rusher who always struggled playing the run as a starter, if he can be disruptive in a situational role he'll be worth a roster spot.
