Is The Ramon Harewood Project Over?

17 posts in this topic

From the "Nobody Cares" department I bring up the question, are we done developing Ramon Harewood?

I Feel like we have been devloping this guy for a good while now and he hasn't jumped out at me as making very much progress. Of course I can't see practices and don't know what the expectations were for him but I count him as the 8th offensive lineman and I fully expect us to pick up a solid vet from here to the end of training camp. Unless I'm mistaken (happens) he can't rejoin the practice squad this year so its now or never.

Starters
Tackles - McKinnie, Oher
Guards - Yanda
Center - Birk
Back-ups/LG - Reid, Osemele, Grankowski, Harewood, Boren, Barbieri

I think there is a good chance Harewood is gone with Barbieri and possibly Boren but we will see soon enough. I like Boren and Harewood. I always liked Harewood's potential. I think we will see what our intentions were with Harewood this year. I think this is a make or break offseason for him.

I've heard different things - some people tell me he can't stay healthy, others that we put him on IR so he couldn't be swiped by another team while we developed him. Regardless, I agree with Grim, if we don't see something from him this year I believe we will move on.

Harewood's potential was capped by his troublesome knees.

After reconstructing both of his knees and two years of rehab and training, this year is his make it or break it year.

We have to see what he's got in training camp to see if he's worth a roster spot or not.

Knee Reconstruction is tricky because not everyone goes back to their pre-surgery form.

Think about the Joe Reitz Project.

He was on our football scholarship for three years.

We made him from a tall 250 lb TE into a 6'7" 320 lb OT.

However, the project seems like a failure because even with his athleticism, he ended up as a guard. A Starting guard for Indy, but his performance maybe part of the reason, their O-line struggled.

Year One: Spent on IR after surgury to BOTH knees
Year Two: Spent on IR after surgury for torn ankle ligaments

It would be some achievement for a lineman to come back and prove us all wrong

Time to move on
A shame we didn't take Nate Potter and start a new project

I think its more the former. At 6'6 340, he has the size to be great. But if you deal with injuries at that size, they can also nag on forever.

This is a make or break year for him. This will be his third TC with us and if he can't stay healthy or make plays on the field than he's probably gone. There is a chance he can stay. We don't have many options at LT. If he can make a spark then there might be reason to keep him.

So much promise in just his physical attributes. Huge hands, long arms. He's almost has that Ogden Physique.

I actually prefer these questions over the trivial questions like what number everybody will be wearing or what nicknames we should bestow on rookies.

I don't think it's over, we're not blessed with great depth at tackle, but he has to really prove his worth and potential this summer. The odds are stacked against him but I wouldn't say the presence of guys like Boren and Barbieri is much of a factor.

It makes it fun to know what the camp battles are likely going to be. Harewood, Kindle, Bynes, Cook, Gorrer, C.Brown, D.Reed, L.Williams, all these guys have to earn their way back onto the team this year. I mean every player earns his spot everyday but some guys are on the bubble. (We have so many good looking corners this year) Not to mention that next wave of cuts Ozzie keeps mentioning is coming up with teams cutting players after the draft changes team needs and then again later in camp before the salary cap deadline. I think we may get one or two moderately well paid ex-all-pro veteran players in a tough spot (no demand) -ex.Corey Redding, McKinney, Gurode, Zues etc.. Those are usually short term deals that let the player hit the market in a short time while allowing the player the playing time to establish, maintain or develop his reputation...or retire. If we do pick a guy up it totally throws off all the battles and creates one less roster spot which turns up the heat in all those battles.

After seeing him takes snaps at LT I'm convinced he can't play any position at this level. I've never seen a jacked 340lb lineman with no anchor whatsoever.

I loved what I saw from this guy last pre-season. He looked like a guy that was really up and coming but the injuries keep coming. I agree with most that have said that this is the make or break year. If he can stay healthy and show progress he may stick around for another year. I'm rooting for the kid.

I watch those in the trenches closely and some may have already mentioned this, but Harewood also has had surgery on both knees which has contributed to his set backs and not playing. After all, he was put on one of the inability to perform lists which sidelined him for a whole year.

Had thoughts about the progression of Harewood and McAdoo also.

I always felt that Harewood was a project that could develop into a more mature Gaither in a few years. Unfortunately for Harewood knee injuries have hindered his development thus far, I would like to see how he looks in preseason action.
