Courtney Upshaw--Speak On Him

201 posts in this topic

The Manti Te'o lovefest has to stop, every year we all fall in love with some big name prospect and get mad because we don't land them.

Upshaw turned up to his proday at 279lb, he really needs to play at 265lb. It was the same with Suggs, that 15lb weight loss was the difference between his 4.5 sack season and his 14 sack DPotY season.

The best thing about Upshaw is his passion for the game. You can see he really loves it and thats what will drive him on this team. It's not likely he will beat out everyone at camp to start (possible) but he will see playing time at a few spots; mainly as a 3rd down pass rusher (DE/OLB), and special teams but he will be in the rotation and given the chance to make plays. By the end of the year I think he sees significant playing time and contributes right away.

DeCosta kind of has to say that in a way. I think they did try to trade up, but the Patriots were willing to give the Broncos just a little bit more than the Ravens were at 25. Either one would've been an unbelievable pick up so we did great. Only reason I would've preferred Hightower is his versatility but at the same time.. We still have Jameel McClain and next year I think we will make a serious move to get Teo out of Notre Dame (yes, that means I predict the Ravens will make a huge push to jump into the 13-16 spot to get him).

I don't think he does. I don't think he really was a player the Ravens would have traded up to get. I also see us making a push to get Te'o. We have the ammo to do it as of now (hopefully we don't trade any picks for washed-up veterans). So, yeah. I think we have a legitimate shot at getting Manti.

Lol, the lovefest can go on as long as people want it to go. So what if people get mad? That's the way it is sometimes. There was a JImmy Smith lovefest the year we got Jimmy, and everyone seemed pretty pleased with that. I think there is a legitimate chance we get Te'o next year. I'm not saying that as being wishful, but being realistic. This isn't a topic about Te'o, though, so I will not go any further here regarding him.

I agree with you about Upshaw losing some weight and the Suggs comparison.

The time is now young man. Greatness does not wait for your "ideal" time. It presents itself now, your first season.

He's not the biggest hitter from what I've seen but the guy has a motor that never quits and can just flat out play the game. His passion comes out every play and a hardnose player like him is exactly what the ravens need. Should have been a first rounder yes but I don't think a single person is complaining in Baltimore.

I'd say he's a pretty big hitter. I haven't seen him go for big hits often, but he tackles through players when he can line them up.

Upshaw is not built like Suggs. He's shorter, bulkier, yet probably stronger. He played around 270 and had a nack for getting into the backfield. As long as he has a high motor and can play everydown effectivley; I could care less what his weight is.

Those are exactly the two hits I was referring to.

I do not follow much college football. I don't like the kids, I like the big boys. Moreover, the NFL is the real game while the kids when they play in college make too many mistakes for me to hold my interest. So the only thing I can say about Upshaw is that we got a real solid football player who in the near future will play a major role on our defense. Lastly, now that Suggs is out for a while, we will get a chance to really see Upshaw's ability. I don't know, does Suggs' injury overshadow the excitement from our draft? I think so! Damn.

If anyone hasn't seen this short clip from NFL.com, you might want to see it.

Let's just say he would have preferred to be picked in the 1st round.

Curious what Dean Pees will do with Courtney as well as our budding defensive roster. Mcphee/Jones/McClain/Kruger all need to step up!

Yeah, I hope Courtney Upshaw loses weight to 265 lbs.

Terrell Suggs said that he gained weight to improve his run defense, which hurt his pass rushing.

Courtney Upshaw is solid at stopping the run, so he could lose about 10 pounds and be an all-you-can-do OLB.

Courtney Upshaw plans to drop some pounds: 'I'll definitely be going down to get myself prepared conditioning-wise to make a starting job.

Upshaw is an absolute beast waiting to be unleashed! He has a chip or two(no pun intended) on his shoulder and will conquer and instill fear into QBs' much like Suggs did! I feel good...

After watching the clips from rookie camp, I'm impressed with Upshaw's physical size and obvious strength. There are questions about whether or not he can drop back in coverage and pick up tight ends. I'm not sure that he will be quick enough to cover a WR, but he should be able to jam up a TE on the line. His biggest talent will be stopping the run and hitting or hurrying the QB. If he can provide outside pressure, then the CBs will be able to cover their receivers.

We finally have the Woodley to our Harrison. This pick will prove to be paramount. I truly believe Upshaw and Suggs will be one of the most devastating duos in football. When you add in the front 3 of Ngata, Cody, and Jones/McPhee I love our future in the front 7 as well as the secondary. We have a ridiculous defense. Cody's improvement will really be huge for our defense.
