I know this is a Webb thread, but I just want to say something about Ed Reed and him returning.

I don't think Ed Reed (after listening to the interview, finally) is saying he wants big money to remain with the Ravens. I think he is saying that he wants to be given a longer contract with a reasonable pay, not some deal where it's unfair to him. He wants respect. He deserves it, honestly. Ed Reed is very important to this franchise.

I don't think it's impossible to keep Reed. I think it's doable. We won't be able to keep Williams and Reed, though. I highly doubt that will happen.

That would be nice, but just a couple years ago Ed was talking about wanting a new contract and believing that he was underpaid. I think he said something about being underpaid compared to other DBs out there in his more recent comments as well. I would love for him to stay on a few more years so lets hope you are right and they can work something out that makes Ed happy without hindering our ability to sign whomever we need in other areas as well.

Don't forget about Williams and Brown too. We not only have a good secondary but our depth is looking good too.

Gorrer actually played fairly well too. Where did these corners come from? now if only we could find safeties.

this was the news I was hoping for all offseason

what a great way to wake up, go online and see Webb signs long term deal

YIPPEEE!!!

Webb makes such strong plays on the ball, he reminds me of a young Ed Reed in that regard

how does this affect the current cap situation? Does it provide more room or less? beyond that VERY excited to see him extended

The deal is set up to pay him a little under the tender so we save money this year.

I don't see why we couldn't sign both Reed and Williams, as neither guy will get a huge contract imo.

I agree with you, Ed didn't say he wanted huge money. In fact Ed acknowledged that he doesn't play a position that commands top dollar. Ed's frustration seems to come from tje fact that the Ravens weren't willing to give him an extension last season. The Ravens probably held priority on signing Ngata and Yanda. Much like Ray a few years ago, the timing for a Ed Reed deal wasn't right.

Fast forward to now, Ed is in the last year of his deal and the Ravens will probably offer him a fair deal after the season. Maybe like Ray, Ed will see what FA has to offer but he'll finish up in a Ravens uniform.

With the new TV deal money, they cap will rise next year amd that's why the Ravens should be able to sign both Reed and Williams.

As for Webb moving to Safety, I'm not saying it will happen. However should we be put in a position where we don't have a quality backup to Ed, I think it'd be foolish to think the Ravens wouldn't put their best players on the field. If that means Webb to FS, with Williams, Smith, Graham, Gorrer and Brown manning the CB position I'm sure Harbs will at least entertain the idea.

I don't think Williams would get a big contract right now. He would probably get a $5M a year deal right now, honestly. I would say Williams was solid last year. He wasn't spectacular but wasn't bad at all. He was better than Washington, Foxworth, and the dreaded Frank Walker. If Williams has a better season this year, I could see him get anywhere between 7-9M a year. In my opinion, we wouldn't be able to match that with Webb, Rice, Flacco, & also Ed Reed as well as Kruger.

You can't pay all those guys. Under these circumstances, I don't see us being able to keep Cary Williams unless he doesn't do well this year.

Webb at safety makes sense. I mean, for all we know someone like Gilmore could drop to us in the 1st and we draft him. Having Gilmore, Smith, & Webb would be one of the most ridiculous secondaries in the NFL when you throw in Williams as well. In that situation, I could really see us put Webb to safety. I personally think Webb should stay at CB for now, though. I know you agree, just clarifying my own opinion.

As for Ed Reed looking elsewhere and coming back, I believe and agree with you. That doesn't mean I am not nervous. I am nervous as Hell because of a certain guy who likes to wear hoodies. He has a serious man-crush on #20.

All I want is for us to keep Flacco, Reed, & Rice since we got Webb. Get it done, Ozzie!

It probably won't happen unless Jimmy and Cary have a webb type of breakout year coming up for our staff to be comfortable with leaving them as the 2 starters in 2013. obviously i do see potential for him at safety because he played there and that he fits the ballhawk mentality like ed but we'll just have to see how jimmy and cary progress while ed is around for the time being. its a long way away before harbs will have to make that decision barring any Brett Favre type retirement talks from ed this year.

I don't know man, maybe I'm living in fantasy Island, but I think we can and will keep the guys we want. I look at this team and its young and talented, so no we won't be able keep everyone.

However I look at the Ravens history and I see, JO, Heap, Ray Lew, JLew, CMac and Ed who all got pretty big deals over the years. Even with those deals, we were still able to add some fairly pricey guys like Rolle and Mason. They didn't get huge money, but they were getting paid.

We also was able to get atleast 2 contracts out of guys like AD,Scott,Gregg etc. While the 1st and 2nd round guys played out their rookie deals which is usually 4-5 years.

So now I look at our current Ravens. Suggs, Ngata, Yanda, Flacco, Rice and Webb seem to be the big money guys.

We both agree Ed's situation will probably play out like Ray's. However Ed's position doesn't command nearly as much as Ray's.

Williams will probably be locked up this year. I see 4 years 26mil on top of the 1 year tender like Webb.

Kruger would have to have a monster season to get a deal that would break us. I see Kruger as a 40-50+ tackle 8-10 sack guy. The thing with Kruger is, no matter what he does next season, it'll only be as a 1 year starter. I see a deal similar to the one JJ got in 2007. Nothing major there.

Looking deeper into this roster I don't see any big money deals coming in the next 2 years, while guys like Ray, Boldin and Birks contracts will come off the books. The Ravens are pretty good with contracts, and I don't think they would be talking about extending Williams if it meant not re-signing Reed.

I didn't think about Boldin & Ray, honestly. If Ray retires after this season (which he said would be his last before last season began) then that is a big savings for us, especially when the cap should increase by whatever amount it will (whether a big or small amount). Also, I feel like this is the last season for Boldin, especially depending on what happens with Doss, Williams, & Smith as well as whoever we draft (Childs, Jeffrey, Sanu, etc). The savings of Lewis retiring & Boldin being gone would be around $10M (rough figure off the top of my head).

If anything, though, this just makes me feel better about us keeping Reed not necessarily Williams and Reed. The contract you mentioned is certainly reasonable, though.

There is Revis Island; and now there is the Spider Webb. Really love Webby he just shows how you can find guys with extreme talent lower in the draft from these smaller schools.

I just want to state again ive loved this guy from the first time i saw him step on the field, he always seem to be going 100% and making plays. well i was reading the afc north blog today and just wanted to post what he had to say...i love every single word of it.

Lardarius Webb told the Baltimore Sun that he considers himself one of the top five corners in the NFL, but he realizes that he needs to prove it for an extended period to be placed in the same class as Darrelle Revis and Champ Bailey. “There are plenty of things that I can do better,” Webb said. “I can be an All Pro. I can make the Pro Bowl. I can get nine [interceptions]. There are a lot of things that I can do to improve my game. Money doesn’t change what I want to be in life. I want to go to Canton. I want to be the best to ever play cornerback for the Baltimore Ravens.”

Webb has proven more to me than Joe. He also received his contract first though signed after Joe and Ray without his contract expiring. His first season we go a glimpses of his potential then he came back injured and showed us what he could do without otas. I has even said he deserved his money before the other FAs we had. He's a corner who scored more points than he allowed, he can talk trash. Let me add though, I think Joe shows out this season and shuts people up.

While I'm not a Flacco homer by any means, I don't think Webb has proven more than Joe. He's given us four solid years at the QB position, the most important position on any team, nearly took us to the Super Bowl this past season, came in the clutch at the end of the Steelers game to sweep them for the first time in his career, puts up solid numbers year in and year out, and is a proven winner. Webb has been phenomenal since he came here (minus the major injury), but where would this team be without Flacco?

Not at all, to me it all depends on the attitude on how it was said, just my opinion. Joe was humble when he said it..even gave his reasoning why. He knows his stats dont show it but thats the mind set you have to have. Doubt that makes any sense

Let me rephrase and say he's been more consistent than Joe has been over his career though it was shorter. Everyone mentions the 3rd and long but that might have been Landrys fault. Regardless this is my opinion and I've felt Webb was going to be a star since he started getting some burn his rookie season. It's more me being a fan of Webb than any fault on Flacco. I think both players can retire as some of the best at their position.

Webb is a top CB in the NFL.
But not only did he talk about how good he was, he talked up the whole secondary and how great Cary and Jimmy will be. And how lucky he is to be playing alongside guys like Reed and Pollard.
Not taking all the credit..
