Dare I Say...Rstructure Haloti Ngata's Contract?

65 posts in this topic

i don't think you can because he just signed a contract last year and yes, the FO probably wouldn't do it anyway. they'd much rather prefer to sign rice and flacco to create room.

But didnt Lamar Woodley (from steelers) do the same thing? Same year he got a fat contract he restructured so they can sign players in FA.

We currently have 1.4m salary cap, and I don't think Haloti is a person to sway away the idea considering how tight we are in salary cap.

I blame our cap situation on Lee Evans. I think if we had won the sb Ray and Ed both might have retired saving us millions in cap space. Into what you said, can't restructure right after a new contract. Also, the good thing about Halotis contract is most of it will be paid up by the end of the new season so though I'm not sure, his cap hit for 2013 shouldn't be that bad freeing up much needed space. Restructuring is a bad idea especially if the person might potentially have a huge drop off(don't see that with Ngata), but it can burn you in the end. Maybe resigning Ed to a 2-3 year deal could free up some space though.

The only person on our roster right now whose contract I would entertain restructuring would be Ed Reed's because this is the last year of his deal. Even then, I'm not fond of it and would ideally rather only cut half of it and spread the other half over two more years (extending him into the 2014 season). I expect Reed to be able to play for three more years at this level. The only reason I would restructure his contract is to essentially extend his contract and prevent him from being a free agent next year.

If necessary. Ngata, Yanda, and Suggs would be options for restructuring although Ngata would only free up like 1.5M or so. It's not ideal, but it could be done to make some cap room if someone makes a run at Webb. That's the only reason I could see us having to restructure anyone's deal.

What do you think about that? Restructuring Haloti's contract.

Is that even possible? Would he be inclined to do this?
Not happening. Next question.

i wasn't going from personal knowledge, i thought i heard a few other people say you couldn't but you do have a point with woodley. i do remember him doing that.

His the only one that has a large enough contract who isnt near end of their career( Ed Reed/ Ray Lewis).

And from what I heard the salary cap will significantly increase by two years. (over around 140million dollars as oppose to 120.6m this season). If we were to backload his contract, it might not be as bad of a idea as you think.

I only say this, bc we need to secure our talents now before they are gone (Webb, Rice, Flacco)

From what I understand, Ngata's deal is ridiculously frontloaded. I would definitely prefer to not restructure his contract, but it could be the only option. The cap room is set to increase, and with Ray and Reed retiring soon, there would be more room. But, I don't want to mortgage the future. If we were to restructure a contract, it'd be Ngata, but I doubt that we pursue that route.
the salary cap is not taking massive jumps like that. They are increasing it bit by bit. And even if it did, players would want more money because teams have more to spend so it would cancel out

The cap is going to have a huge jump in 2014 because the next TV deal goes into effect in 2013 so the revenue is going to be way higher, but next year it will probably only go up a small amount.
no true at all. Teams borrowed money from the 2014 cap for this year, the league wanted it at 113 iirc then the teams borrowed around 7mil to get it higher this year, and they are expectec to borrow more next and hence having a lower cap in 2014. Its not going to go up with a bang, it will go up bit by bit.

Edit Heres a link to back it up

http://profootballta...ks-pretty-good/

McNair the head of the finance committee, “It is staying pretty flat for several years,” and "after 2014, the cap will “gradually” increase"

There is no big jump like you all think there is.

We don't need to restructure anyone, we just don't need to overpay Rice or Flacco. So glad Webb is extended.

Sorry, but I dont really believe that. The TV contract in 2013 is a huge increase in revenue. Everything I have read perviously has stated that there will be a significant bump in the cap due to the massive revenue increases and no reference to this "borrowing against future caps"

Exactly this. From what I understand, the cap will be directly proportional to the amount of revenue gained.

no, that would mean moving money into future years and Steve said they dont like to do that...signing Webb freed up cap space, signing Joe and Ray will free up cap room, possibly signing Williams and maybe extending Reed's deal will do the same..if the Ravens have to cut a player to create room they will do that

Ngata just signed his deal and I doubt he will want to restructure it so soon

He'd still get his money but the only thing that would have been smart to do was to have that 10M bonus moved to another year when there is more cap space. Would have been nice when there was still guards on the market though. Highly unlikely any player restructures though unless someone is extended

How? His tender was like 2.7M or something and he's expected to get at least that if not more as a cap hit

most of his pay for this year comes as a signing bonus and doesnt count towards the cap.im not sure what his cap number is now but it should be lower than 2.7M.
that 10m bonus is split over the life of the contract, where not taking full hit for it this year.

Says Ngata counts for 17.9M as a cap hit this year and 15M of it is in bonuses (5M as part of signing bonus and 10M in other bonuses)

I think he is talking about Webb's 10M bonus, not Ngata's.
