Looking To Lock Up Our Three Headed Monster

41 posts in this topic

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome said Wednesday that the team is in long-term contract talks with restricted free agent CBs Lardarius Webb and Cary Williams.

Webb is likely Baltimore's priority because he's a better corner and the Ravens may eventually look to replace Williams with 2011 first-round pick Jimmy Smith. Webb was tendered at the first-round level, but has yet to signed.

This is not new news. He said this back during the state of the Ravens address. It will be news when they are actually signed. Flacco and Rice too.

yeah I kinda just assumed this was going on, if we lose anymore essential FA's we're in trouble. Still sour about losing Grubbs, I have no idea how we're going to replace him.

@arnie_uk.....I can't wait to lock up Webb also, because he is one of my favorite Ravens. The draft can not come soon enough.

I say lock-up Webb (not literally) long-term and wait on Williams until next year. I would rather we see another season from Williams before giving him an extension.

I'm with you in that. I didn't think keeping Cary would be a priority with Jimmy waiting but but I have no idea what their plans are with the future of the secondary. D line and dbs look set, worried about safety and lb.

I think we will end up singing Webb this year and letting Williams go nxt year. I like him but we wont be able to afford him. Then Jimmy will replace him and we will draft a corner either this year or next

Im a little skeptical on giving Cary a long term contract. Hes talented, but quite inconsistent. I agree that we should give him another year or so before we give him a long term deal.

The agent for Cary, same as Webb, didn't sound like a Cary signing was imminent. Just said Ozzie mentioned a desire to get something done with Cary. Said they talked around the time of the Combine.

I doubt anything else gets done until after Ray Rice is done and it sounds like progress is being made there.

Yes, wait another year on Cary.
No point rushing into a contract Chris Carr style

I'm hoping for big things from Danny Gorrer for the next few years, looks to have great potential

I think Gorrer is a big time sleeper. From what he showed when he did have playing time, i think his potential will bring him higher in the depth chart.

This secondary, as it stands, is one of the most dangerous in the NFL, and has potential to be THE most dangerous secondary in the NFL. I mean, we have our ballhawking safety, a gamechanger in Webb who can make tackles easily, excellent size in Williams/Smith, and Gorrer is an up and comer guy with some nice size as well. And the best part?? Other than Reed.... all the players are very young and haven't even started to reach their peaks yet.

Locking up Cary seems vital. After a year of starting experience he might hit his stride next year and demand big money come contract talks. Lock him up now and get him while he's still in his upswing.

If we locked up Cary we'd have three of the most physical dominating corners in the game. Did I mention they're 27, 26, and 23? That's a lot of young experienced talent in our corner group.

EDIT: I was on the game thread during the Patriots game and remember many doubters saying game over when Brady was at mid-field with the ball. The Jimmy came out of nowhere with a probowl caliber play and we got the INT of the game. The Jimmy may be young but he's an extremely bright star. And I must say, I'm SO GLAD we have Bernard 'Pat Killer' Pollard roaming back there.

I'm not quite as enthusiastic about Cary as I am about Webb and Jimmy. Cary's been pretty solid but he has a bad habit of giving big cushions, he's definitely the weak link there.

I think we'll likely see Jimmy and Webb starting with Cary as the number 3.

You'd probably be surprised to hear that Cary Williams was on the opponent's best receiver quite a few times last year, because the Ravens corners don't change sides of the field for whatever reason.

This was also his first real season having a chance at starting and getting signigicant playing time. I can only expect the guy to get better. Last year was probably the most pressure he's had on him in his football career. No he knows he can play on this level, so I'd expect him to make even more plays, especially with Webb most likely being avoided by opposing QBs.

Yeah i know. I'm a little surprised nobody is giving him any credit. from the standards of the last few corners (Foxworth, Carr, Washington, Walker, etc), he has been awesome. one of my favorite players (my pic was a hint). He doesn't get the stats but he doesn't need them. I am so excited about this year's secondary. couldn't ask to have any other DB's in the league. Yeah, there may be better ones but i love the dedication, passion, and energy they bring to the defense.

Why would I be surprised? Cary's flaws accounted for a lot in our worst games. He got torched by VJax and Britt.

Again, I don't think the guy's bad, I just think at the moment we show a lot more promise with Smith and Webb. Cary's great, especially for a number 3 but he's not on Webb's level, and I think Smith has a lot higher ceiling. I definitely want to keep him though. He's big, he's got talent, and he's clearly got a work ethic.

Webb really shined as the cream of the CB crop last season. Cary started to look like a shutdown corner last year. Jimmy took most of the season to get up to speed.

I don't get it either. Maybe they try to play them to there strong suits but Webb actually moved around a bit. He would play outside and on the slot sometimes. You would think because they seemed to play man more this season that it wouldn't make much of a difference if thy did [profanity deleted] around. I can't remember but I think even in the Chargers game instead of moving Cary to the left they kept him on the right with Jimmy plugging in Webbs spot.
Kenny Britt was torching Foxworth. And SD was abusing Jimmy, not Cary, that entire game.

You're aware that corners don't match up with receivers for entire games right? They move around? He did not play well in those games.
True. But Foxworth and Jimmy were the one's getting abused in the games you cited.

I can vouch for this. Britt was Foxy's daddy, and VJax definitely gave Jimmy a "welcome to the NFL" Cary did very well in those games.

Cary was great. The only times he really got beat were by fast guys going deep. I'd take Cary over most CBs in the lague.

I really like Cary, especially considering his size and physicality. He's lovely as a nickel
