Saints' Bounty Investigation, Updated: Suspensions Overturned Then Re-Issued

If the coach knew, he deserves it.

I wonder which players are going to be disciplined?

IMO - I don't think this discipline makes the game softer. I think it helps the NFL avoid future law suits when players are injured badly.

How does the fine hurt New Orleans when they don't have to pay Sean Payton, the assistant coach, and the GM? Seems like they're saving a lot of money in all of this...
the 500k fine and the non payment of wages probably cancel each other out, maybe even make money out of it

Dang thats a tough punishment. I was all over the place when I watched it. My friend is a Saints fan, I feel bad for him. What is Sean Payton gonna entertain himself with for a year?

Well there are technically repercussions.. His "business" is hurt by losing draft picks/some upset fans (merchandising dollars).. Fielding a worse team because of situation...
He will definitely lose more then he saves

I didn't expect a year punishment for Payton. Maybe with the money they save they can lock up Brees to a contract he deserves? I know it will be more then Mannings.

Goodell, in the long run, is terrible for the league, but I have to give him some respect for this decision. Front Offices and coaches have been held to lower standards, or at least that's how it would seem. This kind of thing is going to get this bounty system to stop for the most part. Losing Payton for an entire year is a huge blow to the Saints, that guy is an offensive genius. I'm surprised Goodell would take out a well known and well liked coach, especially after Goodell let Belichick walk away with (basically) nothing for Spygate.

When players are fined the money goes to charities. Maybe the forfeited pay because of suspensions goes to charities as well? I'm not sure about that. Either way losing Sean Payton for a year is a severe punishment to the owner because his team will most likely fall apart.

did sean payton pay the player on the opposing team to injure him this year?
No but he knew about the bounty system and did nothing to stop it.

My point was, Sean Payton injured his knee this year, was kinda joking about him having payed the player who did it to him, whether he got payed or not... :D

people are complaining on many sights that the nfl is not being fair but in all honesty I see the Fairness - Pats weren't doing something that jeopardizes careers . The Severity meets the Crime , there is a Staunch difference between Assaulting people on purpose with the intent to cause grievous injury and Cheating /espionage . They are in no way on the same level . the NFL was Right in this case. Payton was the Man in the locker room he should have Manned up and put a stop to it. His punishment fits the crime but I believe other teams who ousted williams prior to him coaching in NO are not exempt if they did not warn the league prior to termination of his contracts

See, this is why I find it completely unfathomable that he signed there. Grubbs MUST have known that a severe punishment was coming the Saints way yet he signed for them anyway. This eliminates their Super Bowl chances.

Not only this but the fact that it was investigated earlier in 2010 and reports said they denied any bounties occurring and then it pops up again? The punishment fits the crime. That's what Goodell said and I completely agree with him. Not only did they did this, but they lied and hid the truth from the NFL.

Ouch. The Sean Payton suspension is harsh. Gregg Williams should be suspended forever instead of indefinitely.
It could very well become a life-time ban.

Not of this magnitude.

Goodell just made Hurricane Katrina look like a gust of wind.

What do the picks have to do with the bounty? You fined the team a half a million dollars, took out their head coach, took our the assistant head coach and took out the GM.

It was too much. It affects the fans the most when you take away the picks and make them a crap team because their front office and coaching staff is gone.

Harder fines and less suspensions.
How do you give a billionaire harder fines? $500,000 is a drop in the bucket to these guys. The fine means nothing. You will not stop any of this behavior with fines that is like $500 to them.

It is the punishment that will get results.

P.S. And I don't feel the tiniest bit of sympathy for Grubbs. A total of $3 mil difference over 5 years? Really Ben? Oh well.

It will be interesting to see if any of the players involved get hit.

Wow.. absolutely believable. The one thing that I find interesting is that the Saints GM Suspension begins when the regular season starts which means he can still be in the Saints Draft Room for the Draft. I think the NFL should have suspended their GM from the Draft as well, I mean if Payton's suspension begins on April 1st, why not Micky Loomis and he not being able to take part in the Draft.

Haha Ben Grubbs, could have stayed here and avoided that mess.

Let the Super Bowl Host Curse Begin!!!

They're already missing their 1st and 2nd round picks, banning Loomis from the war room would clearly be trying to ruin the Saints season and draft.

They could of fined and suspended Payton a reasonable amount instead of taking away his 7.5 mil salary and suspending him for the season.

Joe Paterno didn't even get it that bad (well besides the whole dying of cancer) and he knew of something much, much worse.
