We're a little light at safety but not critically. Jimmy Smith will assume that position once Ed's gone, according to Ozzie at the season-end conference.

More of the question right now is what does all this mean for the tail end of the off-season. And don't expect any signals out of Ravens FO ; if there are bargains out there - guys like Bryant McKinnie and Vonta Leach - Ozzie's team will just keep their traps shut then buy when everyone's unaware.

This said, I feel the pain in the Ravens fan-base. It's hard to root for individuals during a season, then get used to other names in the team the following year.

The Ravens do have reserve safety Emanuel Cook as an exclusive rights free agent. After signing him midway through last year after he was cut by the New York Jets, Cook was active for the final seven games.

8 of you have commented that we have no depth at saftey. lol Cook did pretty well in those final seven games for someone who came in mid-season.

And again...no good news from the Ravens since the end of January (and no, I don't consider Lewis and Reed staying or Birk resigning good news, because it was pretty obvious). I only hope the losses we've had means only that we'll keep Webb!

Ozzie did not say That Jimmy Smith would move to safety once Ed Reed retires. He just meant that by the time Ed Reed retires, Jimmy Smith would assume the role Reed has. He was talking figuratively about how one guy moves on and the next guy assumes that role. That it is a constant evolution. Not literally that it will be his position. Anyway, we are talking about backup safeties here. Guys who make the team based on their ability to play special teams. Perfect spot for young guys, rookies, and undrafted free agents who cost the minimum to make the team. You do not pay market value for a back up safety when you lack cap space.

to let both of them walk, ozzie must see some options in the draft to fill in. imo safety was going to be addressed in the draft anyways. im not sweating this. last yr we lost just as many starters and our young guys stepped up. same will go for this year. kruger, mcphee, art jones, anthony allen will all have bigger roles and as usual wont disappoint. as for the o line, getting mathis will be part of filling that hole and im sure we'll pick someone promising up in the draft, same at mlb, tulloch and hawthorne are still there to pick up and plenty of talent out there in the draft. wont be surprised to get a WR with first pick and getting a mlb and guard or center that have potential in the draft. come on guys ozzie never fails us

we've lost a lot of guys; we've only gained peas, birk(35 years), and caldwell. we also now have no safety depth. looks like oz needs to make magic happen with this 9 mil left and hopefully caldwell can make flacco into rodgers

So now in the draft we need to look at a Linebacker, Safety, Guard, Center, Wide Receiver, and Returner. Man we have alot of holes to fill. I hope we do better in the draft than we are doing in Free Agency right now. I don't care what's being said. Last year most of those guys were old. This year its much much different from last year. The guys we are losing now has got a lot of gas left in the tank unlike Birk who we just re-signed...SMH

We all know Ed Reed is a play away from retiring with his neck injury. Oz has made some great choices in the past but it's like we're saving all our money for Flacco and Rice. We still need guys to block and open holes, guys to pressure the QBs and defensive backs. The Ravens are losing a lot of skilled depth in this free agent period. Scary

Ozzie's focus this yr is on offense (rice, flacco, a left guard, center). why? trust in ozzie, but perhaps b/c new def rules make rough, big hitters less influential in a game. need smart, solid tacklers on def rather than highlight guys. same for every team. given that, it's more important to improve the offense.

We better draft someone or get someone in FA. I don't trust Gorrer or Chykie to backup Ed and Pollard. And we can't blame Ozzie for them leaving. They for some reason think they're better than Ed and Pollard so they left to teams that will never get them to the Super Bowl. oh well at least they're getting more money right. I too roll my eyes at the people who say "In Ozzie We Trust" I'm a Ravens fan not a cult member.

They don't think they are better than Ed or Bernard. Their reason for leaving is understandable. They want to PLAY and they both said with Reed and Pollard there they won't get playing time. That is admiration to their talent, not saying they SHOULD be playing, but they WANT to play. There is a huge difference. I wish them the best of luck. They didn't leave because of money, all they want is to play. What is the harm in that?!

Ok I'v read just about every comment on this trend and I have to put my 2 sense in, look at it this way Haruki and Zibby are good players not great players in my book. I would of like to of seen them stay but I think its actually for the best, Low cap space and our main guys need contracts, Sing Rice 1st, Webb/Flacco 2nd (Flacco does still have one year on his contract, maybe he will ride it out one more year so we can sing more players) But we cant lose Webb he is to good and I believe we still haven't seen his full potential. No matter what happens I will trust the OZ, Im not panicking, these guys are professionals, not idiots lol they know what they are doing. Have faith..... O and get another speed rusher opposite to suggs and a WR in the draft please. RAVENS (*>) NATION!!!
