Compensatory Picks

In losing Redding, Grubbs, JJ and possiblily McLain- what kind of pick will thw Ravens receive?
I know there is some kind of formula if we sign any free agents, but we should receive some nice picks

Considering that we have lost 4 so far, I would say there is a good possibility that we will sign far less than we lose.

I think the picks would be for next years draft, if I'm not mistaken.
[/quote]
I'm not sure how they're doing it because we had two free agencies since the last draft.

Technically but the 2011 FA applies to the 2012 draft, in terms of compensatory picks.

As others have said, the picks won't count until next year.

Comp pick are award based on a net loss of qualifying UFAs. A player who is released does not count as either a gain or a loss. For instance, if Evans, Foxoworth or Carr sign elsewhere, it won't help the Ravens. Likewise, if they were to sign Eric Winston, he wouldn't count as a gain, since he was released by Houston.

Comp picks are initially based the average yearly salary of the player's new contract. That sets the round. After that, the pick can go up a round based on performance (post season honors) or down a round based on the lack of PT.

Guys who sign one-year minimum deals, usually don't qualify.

Right now, the Ravens would likely be due 4 Comp picks for the losses of Grubbs, JJ, Redding and Nakamura. Once they sign a FA or two (assuming those are qualifying UFAs), that number would be reduced (but that also depends on what happens with guys like McClain and Zibby).

So does this free agency apply to this year's draft too?

No, the 2012 FA applies to the 2013 draft.

Like the poster above said, it's based on which players you lose versus which ones you gain (exempting releases). They need the whole FA period to calibrate who lost what and who they signed to replace them.

For the 2012 draft, the only compensatory picks we could get would be for Josh Wilson, I believe. We signed other players to make up for losses of McClain, Chester, Landry, etc.

Last year's free agents will affect compensatory picks for this year's draft. We should get at least 1 pick, probably 2 from losing Landry, Chester, Wilson, and McClain. I think there is someone else I am forgetting ( Stallworth, Housh, or Fabian didnt play entire seasons and had minimal impact) but we only signed Leach and Pollard.

Leach and Pollard will probably negate McClain and Landry, respectively. And maybe Mark Levoir will negate Chester.

Was Ricky Williams a free agent or was he cut?

Levois was cut from the Pats so he doesnt count, but we should still get something from Josh Wilson and Chester, who both signed pretty nice sized contracts.

I think he was a free agent, so that will work against us. I think we get at least 1 pick though. There are a lot of factors that go into the comp picks, but two of the main factors are the size of the contract and the amount of playing time of said players.

If you mean comp picks for 2013 NFL Draft, I am currently projecting a 3rd (Grubbs), 5th (JJ) & a 6th (Redding). There is a formula & it is primarily based on player salary. After salary it takes into account player performance & post-season honors, etc.

I don't know Nakamura's contract so it is difficult to assume that.

As for our comp this year, I would wager we get a 4th round comp pick.

My info comes from mockingthedraft.com

We will regretting the Evans signing at draft time.

We traded for him, has no bearing on comp picks.

We don't have any comp picks this year so we will really be hurting when we miss that 4th round pick.

Comp picks havent been announced yet, but based on who we lost and who we signed we will most likely recieve at least 1 for this draft.

For this coming draft:

qualifying UFAs lost: Landry, Chester, Wilson, McClain

qualify UFAs signed: Leach, Pollard, Ricky

So, it looks like only 1 comp pick, but there is a rumor that Ricky (for some reason) doesnt count. Not sure if there is any truth to that, but he was a UFA.

Given the size of some of the contracts being signed, I'm not seeing Grubbs as a 3rd round comp. In that past, he most certainly would have been, but not with the likes of the contracts being signed this year.

I think it was because he was released from the contract he was on with the Dolphins. Thats at least what I heard.

I know what you're saying. I could see Grubbs a 4th. Problem is that Vjax could give San Diego nothing because of their gains vs losses. Mario's comp depends on if the Texans get anyone in FA. We could still get a 3rd, just not a definitive chance. The Saints lost their comp pick by signing Grubbs.

that doesnt matter, its the size of the contracts that dictate the round, and grubbs contract was no where near the top contracts given out

I know that. What I am saying is if San Diego signs a bunch of guys & their gains & greater than or equal to their losses the contract size won't matter. It's plausible that teams like San Diego, New Orleans, etc. sign themselves out of comp picks nullifying their free agent losses making those contracts signed irrelevant.

I think it's more likely Grubbs is a 4th, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a 3rd. It's not impossible for it to happen. Grubbs could make the Pro Bowl, & if he does I could easily see that 4th round pick become a 3rd. I'd say his comp pick is a cusp 4th that could become a 3rd under the right circumstances.

Feel me?

but it doesnt matter if SD and Tampa get comp picks at al.. grubbs salary was not top tier, it doesnt matter if the top contracts get cancelled out, say if SD went and signed someone else at 50 mil, that would cancel out losing Vjax, but that doesnt matter, grubbs contract is still 2nd tier, so it gets a 2nd tier comp pick. ie 4th round.
