Them Cheap Bengals

18 posts in this topic

Bengals got about $50 Million dollars in cap space, yet they missed out on all the big Free Agents. That means they're either really dumb, or really cheap. Probably in 2013, they're going to sign everything in sight, since Tampa Bay is out of the running. Maybe they sign A.J. Green and Andy Dalton to super long term deals to spread out the cap space.

I expect they're going to go all out next year, or maybe sign up all the mediocre and aging talents they can get since they have to meet the floor.

Notable 2013 Free Agents:

Offense:
Maurice Jones-Drew (Need Bellcow?)
Victor Cruz (1st Option)
Greg Jennings (2nd Option)
Steve Smith (3rd Option)
Jermon Bushrod (Bidding War!)
Jake Long (Big Money!)

Defense:
Osi Umenyiora (Need an Aging Pass Rusher?)
Richard Seymour (Need Another one?)
Dwight Freeney (He ain't getting any younger either)
Charles Woodson (Age is Beauty!)
Ed Reed (Finally out in the market!)

Let me sum this up!

2013 Free Agents isn't that deep with young and great talents.

Looks like them Bengals have to spend all the money on aging talents for one or two year gapstops.

They are going to have four first rounders to pay in 2013 that they don't have yet. Plus their stars are young and will demand larger contracts soon. I think the surplus will close quickly for them by 2013.

I am sorry, but I love Ed Reed so much if I heard he was going to another team I would have post-traumatic stress disorder. I can't even imagine those words, let alone if he went to the Bengals.

Ed Reed wouldn't go to the Bengals, he makes a living off torching them.

I'm just amazed they didn't even make a play for Wallace to compliment AJ in their receiving corps.

Teams like that just shouldn't be allowed cap room. No idea how to use it lol

But didn't I see somewhere yesterday that both Michael Bush and BenJurvis Green-Ellis had or have meets scheduled with the Bengals?

They aren't oldsters by any means. But I guess no news is good news.

Some of us bemoan our lack of activity in Free Agency, well at least we have an excuse lol

Imagine being a Bengals fan knowing you've got all that space but still do nothing with it.

They may be cheap, but they are doing it in one of the most intelligent ways. They have a playoff caliber team that is incredibly young, so with the 50 million cap room they can afford to keep that team together for the next couple of years. Remember they have 4 first round picks coming their way. Don't be surprised if they take the division soon.

How do they have 4 1st round picks? I'm not disputing this, just think I missed something.

I know about the 2012 1st round pick they acquired from Oakland in the Palmer trade, and of course their original 1st round pick for the year. I know about their 2013 1st round pick they have, but I don't believe Oakland made the playoffs which was the condition for them to receive that 1st round pick, making it a 2nd round pick.

I might have a feeling that the Bengals are going to eat bad contracts for draft picks and then release the player, so they can eat the dead money.

Imagine fleecing all the other teams for 2nd, 3rd, 4th round picks. It would be a dream for Ozzie to hoard draft picks like the Bengals, but then Bengals don't have a solid history in drafting until recently. They got lucky in landing a franchise QB and WR last year. This year, they're probably going to load up on talents since they're in a good spot as a playoff team.

Notable Draft Picks (Last 3 Years)

2009:
Andre Smith - 1st - (Rough Start, but settled nicely as a RT)
Rey Maualuga - 2nd - (Viewed as a steal, but doesn't show that 1st round talent)
Michael Johnson - 3rd - (Bengals are reaping the rewards on the risky pick)
Kevin Huber - 5th - (Their Punter)
Bernard Scott - 6th - (Good Change of Pace Back)

2010:
Jermaine Gresham - 1st - (Franchise TE)
Carlos Dunlap 2nd - (Good Pass Rusher)
Jordan Shipley 3rd - (Good Slot Receiver)
Geno Atkins 4th - (Steal for them)

2011:
A.J. Green - 1st - (Franchise WR)
Andy Dalton - 2nd - (Franchise QB)
Dontay Moch - 3rd - (Physical Freak, but injured rookie season)

The Bengals draft in 2008 was not very good because their 1st pick Keith Rivers is now a broken player, Jerome Simpson is a troublemaker, and most of the draft players are either free agents or already out of the team. Also, half of the 2010 and 2009 draft class has been waived. Their record on late round isn't pretty, but then they probably don't care much as long as they get the early picks right.

Let's see what the Bengals are doing....

I think Mike Brown is trying to make profit with that great stadium deal one last time before he has to spend and lose money. There's a reason why the Bengals can't fill those seats. They had to give two for one deals to avoid blacking out on their last game with us to clinch playoffs.

I believe it was if the Raiders reach the AFC title game either last year or this year it's a 1st rounder, if not it's a 2nd rounder. So let's just call it a 2nd rounder.

Raiders have to make the playoffs for that 2nd rounder to be a 1st rounder. If Peyton lands in Denver, you can forget about that 1st rounder. However, the Bengals have recently good with the 1st and 2nd rounders lately.

Bengals haven't spent much of their $50 Million, which means they'll splurge in 2013.

They better nail those two first rounders because everyone know the Bengals had a pretty easy schedule. The real record is 2-4 (where they fell flat against the more seasoned teams). 2012 AFC north faces the NFC East, which is no joke with Eagles, Cowboys, Giants, and RGIII Show. However, AFC West does help a little, but then upgraded Chiefs, Chargers, Broncos (If Manning Lands) can pose a real serious season.
