It's Quiet... Maybe Too Quiet...

This is the Raven way, don't know why everyone expects us to sign all these free agents. I know we got an extra 1.6 million to work with but that isn't much with the cap at 120.6. Last I heard the Ravens were negotiating with Matt Birk to re-sign him and that they had an offer down for Ben Grubbs. Webb is restricted and Rice is Franchised so locking up Birk and Grubbs are probably priorities right now.

Patience... I won't be surprised to see a deal done with Birk before next week, and hopefully Grubbs re-signs here instead of going to New Orleans.

The thing though, is a lot of the teams who need a corner may not want to give up their first round pick. I could see the Pats do it, but that's all. The Bucs won't do it, because they have a top 10 pick. If anything, I think Cary might be the sacrificial lamb since he's only got a second round tender.

The Bengals could just to hurt us in both ways.

Now that I think about it, I believe the big reason we haven't heard much from the Ravens is because we don't know what will happen with Ben. If he decides to return home, then what would be the point of going after Mathis except for price? I mean, we know what we get with Ben, but not really with Mathis. He wasn't very good until this year, and he battled injuries before. Grubbs only became injured recently.

If we lose Ben, I believe we will see the Ravens become very active.

I don't think we'll pay through the nose for Webb. He didn't play particularly well his first couple years; we need to see him do this again before we break the bank for him.
[/quote]

HA! And i'm the crazy one around here?

Which year would you be talking about? His rookie year, where he was... a rookie? And suffered a season-ending knee injury on special teams?

Or his 2nd year, where he was still recovering from the knee-injury, and had absolutely no pass rush to help him out?

He's arguably the best play-making corner in the game, and one of the top 3 overall corners. Revis could be considered the best "shut-down" corner, but he doesn't make many big plays. Charles Woodson makes a lot of big plays, but also gives up plenty. Webb is the perfect mix, and easily worth well more than anything Cortland Finnigan got.

For the record... people were going crazy over Suggs wanting a big contract. Well, when Flacco holds out for his "top 5 money" and Ray Rice gets his "Arian Foster money" I don't want to hear anyone using the "offensive line isn't good enough" excuse anymore. If Flacco really just needed a better line to prove he's "the man" then he should be giving the Ravens a discount so they can sign some people.

Sure, there's the draft. But the bad thing about settling for just making the playoffs but never getting to the big game is that your draft pick is always really late and the super-star prospects aren't around by the time your first pick gets there. Yeah, there's exceptions... but there's also a lot more Sergio Kindles!

Don't you have a Flacco thread to troll?

You clearly missed the point of what I said, which is very simply, he's had one great year. We're not going to give him $10M+ based on one season. Simple enough?

Yes, the Ravens are like our namesake--like the Raven, we sit & watch as the animals around us die, and then we pick apart what's good and leave the rest to rot. We let other teams go crazy & spend all their money to cut quality players that were expensive, and a lot of times those players still get paid by their other team. We sign those quality players knowing we can usually bring something out of them. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.

Usually it does. This time, it will be no different. I predict the Ravens address OL in FA, and focus their draft towards a C, WR, LB (outside & inside), as well as safety & corner. I predict two WRs, one a PR/KR. One ILB & one OLB. I also predict a S/CB.

That is Awesome Sir, +1 to you.

Usually make moves closer to the draft or after. Let things calm down then Ozzie sneaks through like Big Ben at spring break.

Yeah, really....I giggle at the "we need to make some moves" notion. Oz lays low and waits for the value pickup, if he does anything at all in FA. Draft, baby...DRAFT!!!

But at least, ernie, we now have the market set for Webb.

This makes it more likely that we either resign to lose Webb and gain that extra pick, or extend Webb.

As far as the ravens, different year same story. We'll see what players are left over and sign a few veterans and make our moves through the draft. We always do

exactly!

anyone and everyone that has been a fan of this team and on these boards for any real length of time knows that our FO moves like turtles every free-agency period! they don't pull the trigger to quickly just because other teams are doing so. sometimes i wish they would though to put us out of misery of waiting. lol!

It will be a very sad day when Ozzie decides to retire. I hope for everyones sake that he is training a brilliant young guy to take his place and be even more legendary as a GM than Ozzie has been/.

Ozzie has been training DeCosta for years. We're in good hands when Ozzie decides to go.

Thats what I hope. Its just hard to emulate the amazing "Ozzie-sense" for sleepers. Its not something you can train into someone.

Ouch. I know who he is, but I still dont think that anyone will ever be able to replace Ozzie and his legacy.

This topic throws some light on the financial problems faced by the Ravens in FA. We will need a guard to replace Grubbs when he signs with N.O. for $40-45 million. Mathias would make sense and he would come at a good price. I have not come to terms with losing both Webb and Williams yet. This is possible and will totally change our draft plans. The Winston interest doesn't make too much sense unless we plan to trade Oher. Of course, no one is totally comfortable with Oher at LT. McKinnie would make sense for another year, but we really need to address this position in the draft. Oher's contract comes up next year, too. Why don't we consider taking another Eagle (Jamaal Jackson) at center rather than go with Birk again? He is younger and has the experience that a rookie like Konz can't learn over the summer. Forget about Jacobs and Benson and let Allen be the backup this year. We really don't have the money to spend.

Go do your homework. Decosta is gonna be great for us. He's already had teams try and pry him from us to be their GM. He turned them down and we paid the man. He's our next GM and we are in great shape!
