MERGED: Evan Mathis

mathis isn´t half as good as grubbs in my eyes. grubbs was the most underrated player in the nfl over the last years. we struggled badly when he was down. this is really gonna hurt us.

maybe tomorrow webb is gone...

Let's sign Mathis. Ink it, Ozzie.

I wonder if we can get him for 4M a year. That would be just great.
[/quote]

Better yet, what if we could get Winston for $6M and Mathis for $3M. That would take the edge off of our losses.

No.

Rather put Floyd out on the field, than have Konz at center as our first round pick.

Not talking about draft picks.. I was just talking about a possible scenario concerning our o line

There is nothing bad about Evan Mathis' game. He was rated as the best Left Guard in the NFL last season by Pro Football Focus which is one of the few sources that definitely knows what they are talking about. If we can bring him in cheaper than Ben Grubbs is asking I think our offensive line will be better in a year or two. The only thing that will probably hold him back a bit this season is learning blocking assignments and understanding our zone run-blocking scheme that I hope we use more like in Week 1 against the Steelers. He is better than Ben Grubbs but Ben Grubbs will be missed.

I can support that. Not sure we will sign Mathis for 3M, but anything's possible.

I'd rather get McNeil & Mathis, though. We'll see how this shakes out! I'm excited for Ozzie to address our o-line now.

McNeil has the size 6'7" and the quickness to remind us of Jonathan Ogden at LT. He was cut this month because he was due to make $8M. I don't know if we have that kind of money. Also, if we are interested in him, then we had better move quickly because the Lions are interviewing him today.

Yeah, I saw that about the Lions. It sucks. They better leave him alone. I hope he hates the Lions & Stafford gives him the finger lol.
He was cut because of his price & his failed the physical, and they had a capable & cheaper replacement in Gaither. I honestly think his injuries could be a concern but I feel like if he passes our physical then I am very confident in him, which is why I am 100% signing him. I wouldn't want to sign someone who fails our physical, so my desire to have him is under the assumption he passes, which I believe he will.

McNeil was once a Pro Bowl LT who was very dominant & it wasn't that long ago. These injuries are really unfortunate but if healthy he will be a steal. I think we can get him cheap (not 8M) because of his injuries & concerns. If we can get him for 5M that is a steal. He is worth that.

Mathis may have only the one "good" year but I would say he's a lot more than just half as good as Grubbs. We sucked badly when Grubbs was out because Gurode was terrible. Mathis would be a hell of a lot better than Gurode was.

It's going to hurt us if we don't replace him, but I'm sure we will.

Retaining Webb on a long term deal should be top of the to-do list for Ozzie now.

Hurray!!! Great!!! We will have Floyd snap the ball to Flacco and stop Wilfork and other DT's from nailing Rice in the backfield. Why not? Let's not make another Super Bowl because we do not improve our play in the trenches.

Floyd will go much earlier than we pick. We will have our choice of Reubin, Wright, Jeffrey, and Sanu.

Lol. I laughed out loud at this.

Can we use Haloti Ngata, Cody, & McPhee as our offensive line? I mean, if they can play defensive line then the transition shouldn't be too hard, right?

No D-line should stay D-line....
Last time we were in the Superbowl how much help did we really get from the offense?

Have you watched the last few Super Bowls? The NFL has changed. It's a passing league.

Saying we shouldn't sign a guard because we're a defensive team is just completely nonsensical.

But imagine how long Flacco would have to throw with that line-up! And Rice would get crazy yards. Teams would have to double team everyone!

Lol, I hope you know I am kidding. Seriously. Has anyone ever said to make the defensive line the offensive line & actually mean it? I hope not.

Who says that this defense as Ballhawking as they are that they can't put points on the board and keep themselves on the field...

For everyone who thinks Evan Mathis is a one year wonder, he's consistently has been graded as a top 10 guard for years. It seems like that because he's was injured.

Ironically, a couple of the times he's was injured and taken out of games, he was playing us. Once with Philly and once with Cincy. If he never has to play the Ravens again, he will stay healthy for the rest of his career.

Quietly, I've been hoping Grubbs leave to get his payday and we sign Mathis. I see him as a significant upgrade although he's older. Plus he's an Alabama guy and you know Ozzie likes that.

Surely you mean off the field? The defense would gladly take a 3-and-out for the opposing offense every time.

Yeah dude. Ray and Ed can totally play every snap in an entire football game, they won't be tired by then or anything.

Are you serious with this stuff you're posting? Because its absolutely absurd.

As opposed to having teams play press man against us and Flacco having no one to throw to because even with 5 seconds of time no one is open?

We're in a catch 22 spot, the point Alexir is trying to make is that you can find an interior lineman in the mid rounds who's play won't be that far of a drop off compared to Konz. You aren't going to find another WR in the entire draft that can do what Floyd can do.

Agreed. Floyd over just about any other prospect that might fall to us. He's easily a top-5 prospect IMO if Justin Blackmon is considered one - Floyd is a better receiver talent wise.

Not a single one of those would I take in the first round unless we somehow traded back and all the other prospects were gone.

On iPhone, hard to quote but to the smart guy who was saying Floyd would be snappin the ball my point was Centers don't go in the first normally and we can get a quality starter in a later round, I'm a huge trench guy, but I don't wanna reach for a position in the first when we have needs that may not be there in later rounds

If Flacco rolls out like he did vs pats, I would deft say we can build line in later rounds. It's the run blocking for our midget rb that is the concern I feel, guy was a no show in post season play

He was a no-show because teams dedicated their defense to shutting down Rice, which opened up things for the passing offense. The O-line didnt exactly play well in either post-season game.

Our oline collapsed in the posteason. Why do you think Flacco WAS rolling out? Honestly I was impressed Cam had the thought to start doing it.

If we resign McClain & sign Mathis, I will be happy.
I'm guessing in about a year or two Grubbs will fall off like our other free agents have in the past. Although I will miss having him.

Our o line was atrocious in some games in regular season as well as post season, my point was if flacco remains mobile and not a statue under pressure we can build the offensive line in later rounds but with the first pick I want a game changer not the best center when a 3 rd round center won't be that far off talent wise. Rice was taken out but Ricky did fine, different run styles

I agree Center is pretty far down my list or priorities for the first round of the draft. WR, OLB, ILB are all positions I would rather address early if the right player is available.

I would also love to see more designed roll-outs in the offense, but that is up to Cam call the right plays. I think Joe is definitely athletic enough to make it work, and if my memory serves me correctly almost every single bootleg led to either a big play or TD last season.
