If Jameel McClain Leaves..

61 posts in this topic

Do you guys know Jameel's story? What he has been through in life? He grew up on the streets of Philly often times homeless and staying in shelters with his mom and siblings. It was a struggle for him to find food most nights and slept with complete strangers. He was a golden glove boxer since his early childhood and says his whole life was one big fight. Hes been a hard worker all his life. He earned a scholarship to Syracuse to play football there and decided to enter the NFL draft. After not being selected in the draft he was signed by the Ravens and made an immediate impact. He made the team as an UFA and even played well. His second year was when he really emerged, even earning a starting spot next to the Great Ray Lewis. Nowadays he has not forgot about his beginnings and helps out every way he can. This is a great man, this is a Raven! If we can offer Grubbs "a lot of money" then we can offer McClain enough to get him back. Now lets give this guy some money and lets get him back in Baltimore. He deserves it.

Just thought this was interesting. I don't think a team makes a good impression bringing a player out and not meeting with him. It kind of seems like they don't care. Granted, it is Peyton Manning, but still...

Thank goodness the Broncos are moronic enough to insult McClain by blowing him off as they all hope on a plane to ooooh and aweee at Peyton.

The Market for ILB has been slow.

There's still a lot of quality ILB out there.

Stephen Tulloch
David Hawthorne
Curtis Lofton
London Fletcher
Jameel McClain

I'm think there's a chance Jameel will come back to us for a reasonable deal. When the supply outways the demand, then the price drops. ILB isn't an expensive position like WR or CB. It's a passing league now, so thumpers will come cheap. McClain for 3 Million per year is not bad.

Market Value for McClain?

Dan Conner - 2 years, $6.5M; $2.7M guaranteed
Lofa Tatupu - 2 years, $5.75 million

Jameel is not known to be a superstar ILB, just an underrated jack of all trades serviceable ILB.

The Ravens might be able to sign him around $3 Million per year type contract.

Maybe: 5 year $15 Million ($7 Million Guaranteed)

how about Kamerion Wimbley, just cut by the raiders
[/quote]

Kamerion Wimbley's market has been slow. Imagine if we are able to sign those to bookends for our team. We could be banging, but he might be looking for a contract that's out of our range ($8 Million plus per year)' Al Davis made his contract ridiculous, so he believes he's a big player. It would be amazing to get him around $5 Million if the market doesn't go his way. Most of the 3-4 Defensive Teams have filled up their caps (Jets, Cardinals, Chargers, Ravens, Steelers, Packers, 49ers, Texans) His skillsset really fits well for a 3-4 Def because he's not very well built for the trenches.

Maybe we can reconstruct some of our bigger contracts to get Wimbley for a good price ($5 Million). He might have to do a one year or two year stop gap since his market have been quiet.

Uh, I wouldn't sign McClain to 3M a year. That's way too much. 2M a year seems like a lot of money to me for him. He's not that good. 2.5M is the most I would want us to pay for him, and even then that's a lot.

I dont think 3M is unreasonable. He has been a starter for 2 years and got a 2nd round tender last season. Heck, we gave Ellerbe a 2nd round tender and I dont think its a stretch to say Jameel is better LB than Ellerbe. I'd go so far as to say a 3 year deal between 8-10M is appropriate.

considering we just paid ellerbe 2mil on a 2nd round tender I would be pissed if we didn't pony up 3 or 3.5 a year for McClain. We can still cut ties with ellerbe and his tender. Maybe get him cheaper then

you do realise we just paid, a supposedly lazy, poor attitude, injured last year, ellerbe 2mil right?

I do realize that. I'll be a little more direct with my words: I don't want McClain back. I'm not fond of him. He's a good guy, but I feel like re-signing him will be like Chris Carr all over again.

Yeah, man. You mean you don't trust Ellerbe to give up about 3 more yards a snap than McClain?

I obviously realize that McClain is better than Ellerbe at this point. I would have to be pretty stupid not to realize that. I just don't like McClain & I find him really overrated. The guy is just bland. My opinion on him staying here depends on his contract. Let me be a little clearer because you clearly have a problem with my comments & I don't think I was very clear last night when I wrote that just before I went to sleep.

If we pay McClain 3M a year this year I would be upset. He is not worth that. I also would be upset if it was for some long-term deal. I wouldn't mind him here on a 2-year deal, but I just see him as another potential Chris Carr player if we pay a lot for the guy.

It's not just about not trusting Ellerbe (who got killed all day in the Pats game), it's also about how we have such little depth at ILB. If McClain leaves, who do we have? Ray, Ellerbe, Ayanbadejo, and ...Josh Bynes? Ellerbe is mediocre. Ayanbadejo is good in coverage and special teams but provides very little else. Bynes has proven nothing. I'd like to keep McClain, who has proven that he is a more than capable NFL ILB.

i said this before and i will say it again:

McClain ist better than Bart Scott was. He is very important for our offense. With all the players leaving our team it is even much more important to keep him. i doubt that he will stay but it should be number one priority now.

i dont care who starts, we need depth, what if ellerbe gets injured again, or is a lazy turd and is out of shape, we dont have anyone.. i dont know what mcclain done on you, but hes probably the best ilb we have had beside ray lewis since jamie sharper

Tullock would be much better for Denver, but he would command a high price. I'll take McClain for 2.5 to 3 million.

I'm not impressed by Jameel, but I am thinking he re-signs with us more & more every day. The Eagles (a team I thought perfect for him) have solidified their ILB position. The only teams that would want McClain after the Broncos (who re-signed Mays) passed on him would be Seattle, Arizona, New York (Giants or even Jets), & possibly even the Steelers.

He could go to some surprise sleeper team, but I doubt it. I think we will re-sign him. Personally, I'm not fond of the guy but he is a solid player just not a great one. Perhaps re-signing him means we can take away Ellerbe's tender (way too much for him).

The question I have is how much, how long, & what is guaranteed. I hope the guaranteed money is in the front (2012 & 2013) in case we want to cut him next season like Carr.

no it won´t. it would also mean that we needn´t have to draft a ILB in this year and could wait for te'o next year.
this would be great.

jameel is much better than most of you guys give him credit for. i am glad that the coaches know that!!!

I love how no one is really going after him, makes his price go down. Can we get Joe or Rice's deal done so we can free up cap space though? Geez.

Chances are Jameel ends of back here. The market for mlb is soft and a solid handful of people out there. Dever resigned Joe Mays so not a likely spot.

As much as I'd love to have Te'o on this team, hell I'm hoping to land Hightower and Te'o, but as much as I'd like that, you don't bank on anything that's another year away anything could happen to Te'o this year, that causes him not to be an option for us.

With or without the re-signing of McClain, if the Ravens are high on Hightower or any other ILB they will be drafted.

Also while I'm a fan of McClain, he could very well be another Carr situation. If the Ravens land hightower and he's a stud, then turn around and think Te'o is too good to pass up, McClain could be the odd man out.

It's not like McClain is like Ray in the middle. There is a reason why McClain is still in negotiations with the Ravens instead of signed. McClain's people are probably trying to sell him as Ray's replacement based off the 4 games Ray missed last year. While Ozzie and company is probably veiwing him as a above average hard worker would is a nice "compliment to our defense.

Think Bart Scott. I'm sure the Ravens are thinking.....do we really wanna sign McClain to a lucrative deal only to find out he isn't a good without Ray and we end up looking to trade him 3 years into a 6-7 year deal?

McClain will probably be back this year but it will definitely be at the Ravens price

Yes, yes, & yes.

I agree with everything you said. Btw, I'm not sure if it has been mentioned yet in here but if we re-sign McClain & draft Hightower, I think it would be a nice idea to put McClain in JJ's old spot if K&K aren't looking that good. He used to be an OLB, after all.

I've often thought of that as well with McClain.
