I am not surprised at all. It makes the most sense for all parties. We have McPhee, who really impressed. We have Jones, who has had flashes of brilliance. I think it's time to let the young guys step up. I expect Redding, JJ, McKinney, & Haruki to join Pagano. I think Zibby will join Rex or go to Chicago. McClain I see him going to Philadelphia.

As for Grubbs, shoot, I don't know. I just don't think he is wearing our colors next year, as sad as that is. I only expect us to re-sign Ray Rice. I think he's the only unrestricted free agent we have that we get back. Well, outside of Birk & Gurode, though I find Birk more likely to return than Andre.

Obvious move, makes sense for team and player

Good luck to him, he had a great year and was a leader to the young players

But we'll move on fine without him

Good player, and he always came off as a genuinely good person too. I'll always remember him for this:

Redding was a class act. He got his only taste of winning with us. Back to losing but at least he got another pay.

We'll be fine with MacFee and Joans.

He was one of my favorite players & I am sad to see him go. After he just picked up that fumble against the Steelers in the playoffs I loved the way he played & knew he would be a good player next year. I am sad to see him leave, but he found a good place with Pagano.

Thank you for the great plays, Cory. And thank you for teaching McPhee.

He gets an average salary of 3.5M. I say he will be a 4th-5th round comp pick for us. If he goes to the Pro Bowl he will get us more.

Don't forget about Not-a.

Losing Redding really doesn't hurt this team. Good luck to him with the Colts.

Aren't comp picks awarded based on net free agent gain and loss, along with factors like playing time and performance?

Free agency has just started. The team may very well acquire more free agents that outperform Redding and the FAs they lose.

I think comp picks are awarded first if you lose more free agents then you gain, and then if you're even, if you lost a pro-bowl level player or a player deemed more valuable than one you found to replace them, you get a seventh rounder. But it's all based on last year for this year. So for instance we lost TJ and Donte to free agency but only gained back Lee Evans. So we might get a pick based on their performances vs. his. I'm not sure how they will figure things out, but I have a feeling that we will get one or two comp picks. With Redding, if we don't add a free agent this year and he does well in Indy, we might get a better comp in 2013.

I'm aware their rewarded based on the previous league year's transactions.

Just came across this article that has the team getting a fourth. I've seen people speculate the team will receive a fourth in their mocks, but I hadn't really checked on the free agents the team lost and how they compared to who was brought in. A 4th would be sweet.

A fourth would be real nice, replacing what we gave up for Lee. I'm wondering what happens on the Grubbs front. For instance, say we lose Grubbs but sign a guard - Grubbs is clearly superior so we should still get a pick. But if we lose Grubbs and Redding, but only sign the cheap guard as a sub, does that mean the guard cancels out Redding and we get a high-value pick for Grubbs since he's a pro bowler, or do the two guards cancel each other out?

Yeah, comp picks are awarded based on FA losses vs gains as well as playing time & performance. They are heavily based off of salary. After that it is based on performance such as starting, Pro Bowl accolades, etc. I'm not sure what your point is, but I will address possible points I assume you mean.

If you feel like it's too early to gauge, that's true. We don't know what free agents we will acquire. With that said, if we are conservative & go after FA that are cut, those cut players do not count against us for comp picks. This means that if we sign Hutch, Brown, McNeil, or Winston their contracts won't count against us. If we sign someone like Royal, E. Mathis, etc., then they will.

I happen to think we will be conservative in FA, and will target cut players. If we do this, it's not unreasonable to assume we could acquire the maximum comp picks, which would be 4. We wouldn't get those until next year, though.

As for how comp picks work, they work based upon gains vs losses. For example, if we lose Grubbs, McKinney, Ayanbadejo, McClain, Nakamura, Zbikowski, Redding, & Johnson then those players would be FA losses. That would be a total of 8 FAs. We can only get 4 comp picks, though. The value of comp pick is determined by salary (#1), playing time & accolades (Pro Bowl, team, etc).

For every FA gain (by FA, they mean the ones that aren't cut by other teams) we would lose comps. So if we signed Nicks for 8.5M & lost Grubbs for the same amount, we would get nothing for Grubbs.

Anyway, I am excited to see who steps up between Jones & McPhee. We will probably alternate between the two during the season & give the job to the one who does the best. Might not have a definitive starter until a quarter through the season.

Based on the excerpt (got it from an NFL.com article) below, I think the team would still get a pick if Grubbs signed elsewhere and a backup was signed.
Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.

Unleash McPhee! Between him and Art Jones that position won't miss a beat IMO. Who else does Pagano takes is the real question?

LOL @ pernie mac, sounds a bit like a pornname.

Ontopic: I'm not heartbroken that he's gone, because of Pernell and Art. I'm actually looking forward seeing them play a lot more.

I wonder if the saints will cap available... franchised breeze resigned colston and who knows what kind of penalty they get since they don't have any top draft picks... will they get a cap penalty... that would be great puts more money on the ravens budget.

After we lose a few players, we will evaluate our needs and look for cheap replacements in FA and the draft. It's the Ravens way.

I love the chopped names man. Your giving so many people coronaries reading them that I find it hilarious. +1 to you for making this forum not so stuffy and arrogant.

JJ and Correy Redding were great Ravens and I wish them well. Both played great last year but I think we have some young guys ready to step up. Kruger showed signs that he is ready to take on a bigger role at outside linebacker. McPhee and Jones should be able to pair up and take over for Redding.
