Lardarius Webb got a first-round tender from the Ravens and Cary Williams got a second-round tender, per a league source

Webb is due a $2.742 million one-year base salary, and Williams is set to make $1.927 million

What does that mean? I dont understand the whole tender thing. I really hope we can hang on to the both of them. If not both i hope we can keep Webb..

if someone wants to sign webb for example, they would have to give us a first round pick. They offer him a deal, if he accepts, we get a chance to match it, if we match we keep him, if not we get their first round pick

Giving Cary a 2nd round tender says alot being as inconsistent as he is..
No, second round sounds about right for Cary, who is young with plenty of upside. He's improved every year and did a great job in 2011.

Yikes.
Webb is worth more than a first round pick to us.

Cary's tender is just right. It has to be high enough that teams with low picks in that round won't actually be interested in signing them.

Cary really did come out of nowhere. Wasn't he undrafted? I wouldn't be opposed to losing him for a 2nd rounder, but he does have a huge upside that maybe I haven't seen yet.

Absolutely, but a first round tender is the highest you can give under the new rules.

Does anyone know how long a team has to make an offer? What is the deadline? I know we have 7 days to match.
I thought it was 10 days to match an offer...

Not certain what exactly changed with the last CBA, but prior to this past offseason, RFAs have received qualifying offers from their old clubs and were free to negotiate with any club until a deadline approximately a week prior to the NFL Draft (for 2010 the deadline was April 15), at which time their rights revert to their original club.
There has been speculation of the Patriots being interested in Mike Wallace...if they are going to commit to giving up one of their two 1st rounders for a young seasoned player, it will be for Webb, not for Wallace, IMO. They are too smart to give up draft currency - let alone a 1 - for a position with depth in both the draft & free agency, like WRs...but for a guy who graded out as a top 5-7 CB in the NFL this season...this guy's name belong on the "things to do" poll, for this off-season, well in front of some of the other names.

He was taken in the 7th round by the Titans. And from what we've seen, he does have upside. I'm not saying he's going to be the next shutdown corner, but seeing as this is his first year as a starter, he clearly does have potential.

I do see his potential for sure. I wouldn't mind keeping him AND Webb, we would have a solid core at DB. But if we'd have to keep just one, i really hope it's Webb.

I'd look out for the Rams along with the Pats in the Webb sweepstakes.

I really think It's unlikely that Webb's a Raven next year.

No way the Rams give up the #6 pick for Webb.

Even with their cuts I highly doubt that the Rams have the cap space to sign webb to a large contract for this year.

Dannell Ellerbe received also received a 2nd round tender:

Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe got a second-round restricted tender of $1.927 million, per a league source.
RB Matt Lawrence was non-tendered, making him a FA (although, in the past, they have re-sign guys like this to veteran minimum deals ($615K):

If they did I would miss Ladarius Web but do you realize what we could turn those picks into? Trade back for more picks and still get a top player. If we could get a top 10 pick I'd make that move in a heartbeat as much as I like Web.

Getting the #6 pick would be great for Webb. I'd honestly still rather have Webb, but if we lost him, I'd gladly take the 6th pick.

With that being said though, there's no way the Rams would give up that pick.

I don't see them doing it either but I don't get why moves like this weren't made more often. I understand the importance or picks but when teams have needs like that why not trade for a proven player or just trade back again which I could see happening.

We'd just use it to get more picks :)

or take Blackmon! or Claiborne or whomever the hell we want!

Why was Ellerbe tagged with a second round tender costing the Ravens roughly 2.0 million? Dude is a freaking bum and depth can be had for cheaper.

could they not have tagged him with a lower round tender?

Actually, they can't anyway. To sign a RFA to an offer sheet, you must possess your original draft pick in that round or better.

Since the Rams traded down, they are prohibited from even signing Webb to an offer sheet (not that they would even consider it for the 6th pick either).

This rule keep teams from trading down and then getting away with giving up less to get an RFA.

I have no idea. I am also confused. I wouldn't call him a bum, but I don't think he is worth that tender. I think the Ravens feel like we will lose McClain, and we will need some experience LB who could start next to Ray if necessary. We were probably worried someone would poach our LBs again. If you think about it, the Colts could have done it. Pagano might really like Ellerbe.

Maybe it was in the plan all along. Perhaps Ellerbe > McClain, but the Ravens brass decided to hide him to pay Ellerbe. Unfortunately, Pagano left and he knows the secret.

Lol. Either way, it's done so oh well. I am scratching my head over this, though.
