Ravens Cap Situation

173 posts in this topic

We are cuurently $5.7 mil under the cap, One thing failed to mention in the article is that this is on the assumption that Chris Carr was outright released and not released with a June 1 designation. If he was released with the June 1 designation, then there would be $600K less Cap space until June 1, at which point they would get $2.5M in additional Cap space.

IPretty clear we wont make any plays for nig name FAs, probably wont get Grubbs back, and will struggle to sign the likes of McClain, JJ and Redding unless they offer some discount.

RR getting signed and Flacco reconstruction would probably add $2mil or so which would go along way to helping.

FA begins on tuesday..

I was under the impression that under the new CBA teams can choose to use the Jun 1st release and still gain the salary cap relief immediately. I could be mistaken, but if it doesn't come into effect immediately there is no point in giving that option really.

Wow that isn't really a lot. Yeah Grubbs is all but gone. We still have to resign Birk. We probably wont be able to match what the Bengals are going to give him. Looks like the line baring the draft will be bm-gurode-birk-yanda-oher. I also look for us to add a middle level third option wide receiver

Doesn't it feel like every offseason is a mini over haul? I can't tell if the other teams in the league experience the same amount of lost FAs and new pieces season in and season out, but it sure feels like we experience more change in one offseason than the average team.

Remember even though we made cuts and didn't resign guys. We tagged ray rice so after the tag that puts it around what Arnie said....

Side note. Makes that 6.5 mil we are paying boldin seem like a lot doesn't it lol

The NFL hasn't released the official Salary Cap for the 2012 Season. They are still working on it, so even though players have been Franchised, and Free Agency is on Tuesday the NFL hasn't released what the max salary cap is for the upcoming season. It is rumored to be around $120 Million.

Everything prior to like last week was based of about a 125 cap, its now expected to be 120, and we tagged rice, hence the new figure.. in that link, there is other updates brian has done, you can follow the picture better that way

The change allowing the June 1 release designation came with the 2006 CBA, but it's never allowed immediate Cap relief. Teams have always had to continue to carry that player's Cap number until June 1.

You;re right though, there is no real advantage for teams. The reason it was added was to allow the released player to hit the FA market sooner and not have to wait until June when much of the FA money has been spent and jobs already filled.

Those numbers posted on those sites only included the 44 players who were then under contract. Those numbers did not include Rice's $7,778M franchise tag or the RFA tenders for Webb and Williams (and others) or the ERFA tenders for the 7 ERFAs. Once all of those are added in, you get to $5.7M under.

we probably won't get grubbs back but we could still try. i guess we can ask boldin/reed/sizzle for a pay cut, let jj go, let one of the 2 backup safeties walk, and some other things to get some space.

... and why is the salary cup going down anyway? i thought they were making more money

It's not really going down, it's just staying close to where it was last year. Remember that the aim of the owners in lockout was to reduce the player's share of the revenue pie. Last year's Cap was basically artificially set because of the short time frame before the season started, so this is really the first year that the new Cap formula has been used.

From what I've read, the "total" Cap is going up, but "salaries" part (the part of the Cap that we always hear about) isn't, because the other part of the Cap, the "benefit" has gone up (imagine that - the cost of health insurance going up!!), so that once that is take out of the total cap calculation, the "salaries" part of the Cap is taking a hit.

Jeez....it seems like every year all us fans over estimate the salary cap by a long shot. But in reality we have limited monies to work with. Looks like it is going to be a slim free agency again this year. I just hope we can atleast hold on to some of our free agents.

I just added all the Ravens 2012 cap hits and it added up to $101,309,286.

And with the buyouts of Carr and Foxworth it adds up to $108,059,286

That would mean 12M in cap room right?

Someone explain why we have the alleged $114,300,000 in total salaries?-$5.7 in cap room

Also that article you have linked is under the assumption that we are going to sign all our 7 exclusive rights free agents. Its not like that is going to happen as a matter of fact. I agree we will tender webb and c. williams adding to the cap another 3 mill or so giving it a total of about $110M-$111M. Im thinking we will have $6-7M to play with.

I could be wrong but none of us know the real facts.

The first round tender is $2.74, x 2 (cary and webb) is 5.5, not 3
If we dont sign all our ERFA, we need to replace them with FAs that will become dearer than the RFA, so that will make us even tighter for cap..
Where did you get our "cap hit" amounts from? Have you added in roster bonuses?

Our offseason is usually definned by our drafts anyways. We could still consider restructures.

Boulden
Rey Louise
Ed Read

Are three guys we can consider.

Boulden will probably be cut next year, his production is dropping and on a big contract, you dont restructure in that situation or you will be eating dead cap next year.

Ed Read and Rey Louise arre considering retirement, again you dont restructure and offer a big signing bonus or you will be eating dead cap

And for the record, your taking the piss with the spelling right?

i love it!!!

did we tender grubbs? maybe we can put a tender on him if we already know that we cannot afford him. at least we could get something out of it if he is gone. or does it not work that way?

I really think that we will be okay if Grubbs leaves. We have several players that could fill in at guard. We really need to sign Gurode as a backup guard/center again. If we don't get Konz, then we can always sign Birk after the draft. If not, then why not consider using Gurode as our center and move someone like Reid to guard? Oher would make a pretty good guard, but it wouldn't be fair to keep moving him around. He needs another season at RT to overcome his false starts and to improve his ability to pick up the rush in pass protection.

As for the salary cap, it seems that the NFL has not finalized the actual cap number yet. Here are some quotes from the SBNation website from yesterday:

"The league year, and free agency, starts next Tuesday, March 13. One problem: the NFL has not announced a cap number, according to Pro Football Talk. "

"The league and the players union are haggling over the final number, with an intention to increase it over the flat $120 million that was being projected for 2012."
I guess they will announce the cap number by Tuesday.

you cant tender a UFA, unless you use the franchise tag, we used it on RR, so grubbs is free to test the market

Would've been nice if grubbs could've been tagged, still worried about lossing webb but as mentioned, grubbs can be replaced (although he is great)

PFT just posted an article stating the cap number is still unknown. Maybe, both sides are trying to raise the cap number.

Also, on scout.com, reports have us possibly giving Cary Williams a 2nd round tender instead. That increases the chances of losing him. Might be worth it for an additional second.

Cary is getting a second round tender so it should be cheaper than 2.74. And the cap hit is the player's bonuses and salary together.

According to Jay Glazer, the 2012 Cap Number is expected to be $120.6 Million.

http://profootballta...-120-6-million/

Compared to the 2011 Cap number of $120.375 it's not much of an increase.
