If The Pats Go For Webb

107 posts in this topic

Did we get a definitive answer?

I'd imagine they could just say "Nah I don't accept your offer" and that'd be that? Webb has said he wants to stay here, hasn't he? He knows we'll compensate him well.

I understand the speculation because the Pats have two 1st rounders, but they have been spending high draft picks on CBs every year for the last few years (McCourty, Dowling, Darius Butler etc), they were just all banged up last season. Then you've got guys like Arrington who came out of nowhere to lead the league in picks last season and Sterling Moore who just happened to make the biggest play of OUR season, I find it hard to believe Belichick won't go forward with his guys in the secondary, including maybe drafting another guy with one of those 2 first rounders

While I want him as much as anyone, this is a business. These players are in it to make money. If they offer him a front-loaded contract, for 8-9 million this year we can't match unless we cut someone. There is no real loyalty in sports.

I would be pretty upset indeed.
I have very little respect for the pats.
My whole family is Webb fans. He treated my daughter awesome one night at a signing.
He is an awesome player with awesome character.

And who ever said something about him being a one season wonder..... check your facts. He started off doing very well and has done nothing but improve ever since.

For the love of god we are not moving our BEST corner to safety when he is vastly undersized.
I don't know if he's vastly undersized, or even undersized at all, to play safety. He measured in at 5'9 and 6/10" of an inch at the combine, Ed Reed measured in at 5'11", and Bob Sanders measured in at 5'8 and 3/10" of an inch. Webb played safety in college, so I think the point is that at some time, maybe when he loses some speed and can't play corner anymore, he could make the transition to safety like Rod Woodson and Ronnie Lott did. Of course, we are now talking about a league where tight ends are like wide receivers, but I wouldn't say he's that undersized to play the position.

A year ago, many were ready to run Webb out of town. Now he's a cornerstone.

Flacco is the top priority with Rice a close second.

Webb will probably get a long-term deal with us.

Realistically, Webb's a Raven long-term, but I just gave my opinion that if the Pats offered for Webb, I'd gladly take the first rounder.
No offense, but you'd be a fool to take that. Webb is a certain commodity in a pass happy league. He plays outside on teams #1s, inside in the nickel, blitzes, press coverage man, zone schemes. He does it all. And eventually will go play Safety when he can't run as well as he used to.

agreed!

last year vs the Steelers at home...my wife and i happened to be staying in the same hotel as the Ravens and leaving the hotel on our way to the M&T for the game we met Webb waiting on his truck to be brought around and we chatted for a few minutes. he is a very nice cat. humble and down to earth.

I love Webb, but I'd take a chance on a secondary of Cary Williams, Jimmy Smith, Gorrer and Brown and have Two first rounders.

How do we know that Webb was a one year wonder?

He had great seasons in 2009 and 2010. Hey, you spelled all the names right this time! Congrats!

Anyway, I love Lardarius Webb. I know someone who is a 76-year old fan thought his name was Halarious. lol Webb is a great player on and off the field. He wants to be a Raven, so Ozzie and the rest of Baltimore Ravens Nation will keep him.

I honestly see the patriots or any other team targeting Cary Williams alot more than Webb because he's tender will be worth alot less and he's a solid cornerback who could be number one on teams like the patriots, lion, bills, and etc..

I agree. I think Webb will get a 1st round tender and Cary a 2nd or 3rd round tender. Teams will probably give up the second round tender for Cary more readily than the first for Webb.

if we do not get webb back next year, it will be a long year next year. qbs wont have too much trouble throwing the ball down the field, and it will also allow them to get rid of the ball quicker, which means less sacks from t sizzle. having webb on our defense really makes the people around him better. not as much as say ray lewis does, but he is really impacting this team and making it better. we need to get him back!

yeah I think its a good idea for the ravens to trade Cary Williams and Im sure there will be some teams interested in him. Im not sure if the ravens will be able to give Williams a new contract after this season and why not try to trade him when he's value is already good for a second rounder or third rounder pick.

I doubt they're working on an extension for him at the moment. If someone else offers him a contract I'm sure we'll match it.
But what If its a front loaded contract that we can't match like the article said... with that being said I think at the risk of losing someone like Webb I think we should hold off on extending Flacco unless it opens space. They can have Williams for a first round tender. And maybe we can use it to trade up and make sure we get konz or another good lineman...

Cary is also going to get a 1st round tender.
I just checked out Aaron Wilson's twitter feed - now I don't know what to think. On the one hand, that helps scare of some teams. On the other hand, a team who would be willing to give up a first round pick for a CB would now probably take Webb and not Williams. Hopefully we get them both signed, then we don't have to worry about it.

i can't even believe that the Ravens are contemplating a 1st rd tender on Webb instead of locking him in. smh!

We would have to hope that Webb does whats right. If he chooses to role with the Pats...so be it, we all know one of the most annoying catch phrases around this league is "its a business". Blah blah blah, sometimes business decisions take away your talented players. BUT we would just have to swallow our pride and take their first rounder and try and get a Dre Kirpatrick or a Jenoris Jenkins, or Alfonzo Dennard. And hope that one day they can become the talented corner Lardarius Webb has become.

IN all honesty...I think Webb would deny signing with another team with a smile on his face. :)

It gives the organization a feeler on what they think he should be paid. Say if the Pats want to sign him on for X amount, the Ravens can match that amount rather than overpay him by a larger margin (i.e. Foxworth). Smart move especially when the cap space amount has not been released yet. The FO has a lot of work to do with signing other players. Let another team do the work, then worry about matching.

Besides he knows he's wanted here and his performance has dictated that.

Yeah I know we all want him signed on, but you gotta remember this is a pain staking process.

Well I suppose if the Pats go after Webb and we makes sure to resign him, then they go after Cary we can still get their first round pick and keep Webb.

you sure? because I thought webb was the only one and cary would get the second round tender. The ravens havent announce their tenders on webb or cary yet but i would thought they would atleast just give webb the first round tender and williams the second round tender.

Dont forget, Ed Reed is training webb and i highly doubt webb would walk away from learning from the greatest safety to play the game, ozzie be smart dont risk it pay the man!

Cary Williams is also a restricted free agent... So any team could actually offer him a contract too, this most likely won't happen because Cary didn't make plays ( he never caught an INT ) and was beaten deep a few times....

Webb being a one year wonder would be a reasonable claim if he were a rookie. Like Devin McCourtney for Pats a year ago this season he struggled in coverage.... Or Michael Jenkins for Dallas played well rookie year struggled last 2 yrs in coverage.

Webb has showed good skills every year. His rookie year he played very well ( in his first experience at the CB position ) then he suffered an injury, which limited him some a year ago. This past season his ball recognition and film study shined because he seemed well prepared at all times. The way Webb played last year I think a late 1st round pick would not be adequate compensation. I think a 1st rounder between 8-20 would be reasonable

You seem to be viewing the Tender as a slap in face.... But the tender is basically a temporary deal for a highly coveted Restricted Free Agent the tender is designed to be a scare tactic to other teams to prevent them from pursuing RFAs.

Obviously the team would like to work out a long term deal for 5 years, but Webb just had an excellent season and was a 3rd Round pick ( hasn't had the big contract yet ). And although he didn't make the Pro bowl his agent can easily argue the point that Webb played on a Pro Bowl level and deserve at least an average salary comparable to the other CBs that went to the Pro bowl, the Agent could lobby for a Top CB contract by getting contract near the average of Top 5 CB contracts which would be really steep.

The Tender just like the Franchise Tag is a tool used to extend negotiations between the Team and player w/ agent and also a tool to hopefully prevent other teams from pursuing them until the Ravens can make a deal or at least attempt to make several deals that they feel is fair market value.
